NL West Notes: Headley, Quentin, Cuddyer

The Giants lead the NL West with a 49-40 record, but it doesn't sound as though they'll be particularly aggressive in trade talks this year (it won't be surprising if they trade for bullpen help). Still, there’s plenty of activity throughout the rest of the division with two weeks remaining in July. Here’s the latest…

  • Six teams are discussing Chase Headley with the Padres, Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio reports (on Twitter). The Dodgers, Pirates, Indians, Orioles and Diamondbacks are all believed to have some interest in Headley, who’s under team control through 2014.
  • Though there’s lots of interest in Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin, nothing seems close yet, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). 
  • Michael Cuddyer has drawn trade interest from other teams, Troy Renck of the Denver Post writes. But the Rockies like Cuddyer and would have to eat a chunk of money to get the kind of players they'd want in return. A trade doesn't seem likely this summer.

    If the Pirates “truly” wanted to go “all-in” this year. Why could they not swing a deal for both Upton and Quentin? Then you have a pretty impressive 2-8 spots in your lineup. And you should then be able to hit with just about every team in the NL…

    Walker, Cutch, Upton, Quentin, Alvarez, Jones / McGehee, Barajas… don’t have a legit leadoff hitter but oh well. This lineup would score some runs even if a couple guys slump. Always another legit bat to pick them up.

      Maybe a three way deal with AZ and SD.  Sending Headly to AZ and Upton and Quentin to PGH.

          Would you as a Pirate fan, I’m assuming, be willing to trade say Cole, Heredia and Marte for a run this year?  You guys are so close to being a real contender for years to come again and I’m not sure Huntington is willing, or should be willing, to give that up so quickly.  There have been alot of lean years in Pittsburgh, waiting one more year won’t kill you guys will it?

          Cole and Hanson are the 2 untouchables in our system at this point IMO. Too many times “ace” pitchers never pan out with their top of the rotation “stuff”. Not signing Appel really hurt so letting go of some young arms wouldn’t have been such a burden…plus we have some pretty good arms in AAA that are blocked at this point. And starting next year we are going to have some rule 5 issues with millions of dollars of bonus babies from the new mgt teams drafts

        Bell is on the DL, not sure if he can be dealt, and I doubt they would give up both Marte and Bell especially because ARI wouldnt want OF help, they have a lot of that in the MLB and in the minors already.

           Nah, your farm system is weak sauce and 5 other teams with better farms also want Mr. Headley’s services. Dodgers are not going to get much with what they have to offer.

          That btw was an extreme overpay, so yes, if thats what the dodgers offered we would get Headley. Thats are top 10 prospects btw… – Webster, Winthrow, and Santana. Anyway Corey Seager in a few years will be the best 3rd base prospect in the league so i rather stay away from Headley.

    Curious that there is no 3rd base interest in the Astros’ Chris Johnson.  Similar hitting stats to Headley, not arb eligible until 2014, tho WAR is a little less.  Also a year younger.

        I don’t disagree that Headley is better…he is…but if 6 teams want Headley, then there will be 5 left over that could take Johnson.

    ESPN’s “trades that must happen”: Carlos Quentin to Reds for Kyle Lotzkar. I’d be a little irate as a Pad fan if that is all they got in return for him. Kyle has nice upside, but there are enough teams interested in him that would beat that offer 10 times over.

    I think the Giants are good enough as is to make it to the playoffs but that’s it.  I’m not sure if they can advance.  If Lincecum can even get half as good as he has been in the past that will give them a good shot.  I still think they need a bat in either middle infield spot or in the outfield.  They pretty much have 2 worthless bench spots occupied by Sheirholtz and Burris right now.

    uuhhh If we were to give up Upton I’d want more than Chase Headley. A lot more. A lot lot more haha. He’d be a good piece, but for a 24 yr old MVP caliber player about to go into his prime, Headley shouldn’t even be the main acquisition for Dbacks only a part of it.

        Someone at the top mentioned a three way deal where Upton would end up in Pittsburgh and Headley ending up in Arizona.  Of course there would be alot of other pieces involved, but I believe that is what he was getting at.

    How about Headley and Casey Kelly and Veneble to AZ for Upton? I have a feeling AZ is witholding some info on Upton, similar to what the Pads did to STL with K. Greene.

        Ya I’m with you on that one, Uptons stats are brutal this year. What do you think it would take from the Padres farm to real Stanton in? Would love to see that.

           Probably Kelly/Erlin, Liriano, Hedges and maybe a lower guy is what we could offer without completely gutting our system. However, if Stanton really is available there’s gonna be a lot of competition from other teams to get him.
