Quick Hits: Indians, Lee, Phillies, Pirates

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 30, 2012 at 11:55pm CDT

Links from around MLB, on the eve of the non-waiver trade deadline…

  • The Indians continue to insist they don't expect to trade Justin Masterson or Shin-Soo Choo, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark writes. They'd have to be overwhelmed to trade Choo, but an NL exec says Masterson is "definitely" on the market.
  • The Marlins are begging teams to take Carlos Lee off their hands, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports (on Twitter).
  • Scott Miller of CBSSports.com explains the challenges the Phillies face and how they arrived where they are today.
  • The Pirates continue trying to add a right-handed outfield bat, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter).

Lee to Giants? He’d be a better fit than Morneau.

We’ll take him. Throw in 95% of his salary and we will give you a middle reliever.

They figured out he is a DH who sticks a glove on his hand, but -0- clue how to use it properly.

I kid you not.. David ortiz plays a better defensive 1b than Lee! At least ortiz can handle a pickoff throw from a pitcher and doesn’t get:

      A) Picked off himself from the pitcher
      B) Totally miss the throw, even when he is STANDING on the 1b bag.

Lee just might be the worst guy have ever see *stand* at 1b and wear a glove ever. he sure can’t be called a defensive player.

Maybe they felt they would be able to get a better return for him, than what they gave up? I’m kind of grasping at straws right now.

I feel so bad for the Marlins. They got half a year of a big market team and now the FO is back to their old cheap ways.

The Marlins should have seen this coming with Lee and now they are begging to get rid of him and they aren’t even paying his contract.

If they were smart…Cody Ross. It would take two fringe AA guys to get him and he’s owed less than 1.5 mill for the remainder of the season. Not control after this year, but def a poor man’s Pence

Poor man’s Pence? Other way around… Ross’s numbers are better than Pence’s and Pence has played in 30 more games…

Ross has a higher OPS, .SLG, 1 less HR.. The numbers are all skewed to Ross and he is making less than 1/2 what Pence is.

Who would’ve cost the Pirates more $$$ and/or prospects? Pence or Ross? Pence by far due to age and contract control. I agree that Ross is having a better season. He also happens to be in a far superior lineup and sees umpteen thousand more fastballs in the zone than Pence does. So, despite Ross having better numbers I still think that Pence is a better player for now and the future and Sabean of the Giants apparently agrees. he let Ross walk without a decent offer if he even made one at all this offseason and then went on to trade prospects to attain Pence to help the middle of the lineup which Ross wasn’t able to do consistenly

I actually think that coyld be a good idea. I just dont see why they would giv lincoln up for snider tho cause phillies need relief and I surely believe they woule hav taken him in a pence deal also. Which maked me think again about them even wanting pence now…
