The Phillies acquired Hunter Pence from the Astros for prospects Jarred Cosart, Jonathan Singleton and Josh Zeid and a player to be named later on this date last year. Here are the latest links as we look forward to yet another busy trade deadline…
- The Twins are listening to offers for Denard Span, but won’t move him unless they get a Major League starter in return, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports (on Twitter).
- White Sox GM Kenny Williams says the White Sox are still looking to add, Nightengale reports (on Twitter). The White Sox, who traded forFrancisco Liriano last night, would look to acquire a position player this time, Nightengale writes.
- Alfonso Soriano, Cliff Lee and Ervin Santana are among the players who could clear waivers and be traded in August, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports.
- Willie Bloomquist, Brendan Ryan and Ty Wigginton are thought to be on the Yankees' long list of potential infield options, Heyman reports. Yunel Escobar, Chone Figgins, Jose Lopez and Cody Ransom are also thought to be on New York's list.
- One team that’s spoken with the Mariners reports that "they want everybody," Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com tweets.

So, can anyone update me on the seasons the prospect the astros got from the phillies and who won the trade? overpay by phillie or what?
nm344
they are all playing in japan.
Ryan Hi.
Phillies fan here. Last I checked, Singleton was killing it in AA as a 20 year old. Santana continued to show impressive power, Cosart had an up and down year on the mound, but worked himself to a promotion to AAA. Zied looks like a future bullpen guy at best.
In my opinion, this was a clear win for Houston. Amaro amazingly overpaid for a guy in Pence, who while good, is not a cornerstone type of player. I am not sure why Amaro felt that he needed to part with our top pitching and hitting prospects for a guy Houston was trying to dump for salary reasons.

Not just a clear win, a travesty of a deal for Hunter Pence, one of the most overrated players in baseball. He’s a career 108 OPS+ hitter with bad to terrible defense in RF.
michael
Singleton is playing well and looks like an everyday first baseman of the future. Cosart still has flashes of brilliance, but is still erratic.
nepp
Domingo Santana, the PTBNL, could be the biggest star of the bunch. Singleton has the best chance of being an everyday guy though…very advanced bat for his age/league. And he can play LF for now too…which is huge.
Terrible deal for Amaro. Just brutally bad.

thank you guys. yeah pence is solid, but shouldnt be more than your third best hitter.
MetsMagic
Jonathan Singleton is continuing to impress and is the 1B/DH of the future for the Astros, great power potential. Cosart is erratic, but has high upside. Santana has tremendous power, but serious strikeout issues. All in all, the Phillies gave up a ton of talent for a player they didn’t need, for a stretch run in a year in which they had no chance of missing the postseason.
Hunter Pence is a good player, but there’s so much more they could’ve gotten with that package.
Phillies_Aces35
They didn’t trade for Hunter Pence for the stretch run, they did it to win the World Series. (which didn’t happen obviously, which makes the trade look even worse in hindsight).

Andy Pettitte has suffered a setback. I wonder if the Yankees look to upgrade the rotation now or continue to just ride out the rest of the season with Garcia and more of David Phelps who has been very impressive since being recalled from the minors.

If all they want is a major league starter, then John Lannan it is!

What about Ross Detwiler?
David D
What about Dan Uggla? Braves could move Prado back to 2b. Span plays LF this year, and if we cannot re-sign Bourn in the offseason, then we have our next CF and leadoff
MauerPower
That could work, though the Twins have Eddie Rosario coming up in a few years who has some power and hits for average. Unless you’re joking, I don’t see Uggla being moved.
David D
No, not joking at all. I think moving Prado back to 2b and having more speed (Span) in the linuep would be great for the Braves. Span would also provide insurance if Bourn were to not re-sign. Uggla is signed for a couple more years, and would provide power to Twins lineup. If Rosario makes the jump while Uggla is still under contract, then Uggla could be traded or could be used as a DH
MauerPower
Come to think of it, that is a fair trade. The only problem is the money involved in the deal. Possibly scenario: PTBNL and Span for Uggla and $26MM. I’m not sure who the PTBNL would be.
David D
If the Twins wanted anything close to that much money in the deal, it would be a deal breaker. Braves are on a very tight budget. The money is another reason for the Braves to make a deal. Need to lock up Heyward, Freeman, Kimbrel, Simmons, Prado, and the rest of the young guys. Braves would also need to find their next 3b, as Chipper is retiring after season.
David D
Maybe the Braves could throw in a mid-tier prospect to get the Twins to take on the contract.
MauerPower
The biggest deal-breaker is going to be the money in Uggla’s contract. In a perfect world, we trade Morneau to the Dodgers or Blue Jays to clear roster space for him, but just like Liriano, he’s not worth much to other teams.
Span for Uggla and PTBNL?
David D
I would do that if I were in charge of the Braves. PTBNL would be a mid-level guy, and that is the Twins picking up the money. I really think Uggla would be great in the AL. He is a premier power guy at 2b, and could eventually be used as a DH. I think his skills would work best in an AL lineup where teams like to use power. Span has more of the NL skills where teams like to get on base, and use station to station baseball or small ball.
David D
Dan Uggla? Braves move Prado back to 2b. Span plays LF this year. If Braves cannot re-sign Bourn in offseason, Span moves into CF and leadoff
Ryan Hi.
Hey I know, could we trade Pence BACK to Houston for Singleton?
stroh
No thanks…..both Pence and Eddie Wade are gifts from Houston to Philly, as retribution for giving us Wade in the first place. Very happy with Singleton, Cosart, Santana and Zeid…..predict at least the first 3 will be in majors with Astros in the 2014 timeframe, Cosart could be earlier.
NYPOTENCE
Wigginton and Ryan are not worth it but I would definitely be interested in Bloomquist.
Ryan Hi.
Hey nice handle. Good think you’re not from Indiana, eh?
michael
Fun game: Out loud, say “Who are the Mariners interested in?” Then queue up Gary Oldman on YouTube saying, “Eeeeeeevvvvverrrryyyyyyyoooooone.”
esasc4
The braves really need bloomquist and reed johnson for their bench, wren needs to go all out to get those 2
