Diamondbacks Release Lyle Overbay

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 6, 2012 at 7:32am CDT

The Diamondbacks released first baseman Lyle Overbay, the team announced on its website. Arizona had designated Overbay for assignment last week, and he drew some interest from the Reds and Orioles.

Overbay, who's signed to a one-year, $1MM contract, has a .271/.354/.439 batting line in 12 MLB seasons. He can now be signed for a pro-rated portion of the MLB minimum salary.

The 35-year-old posted a .292/.367/.448 batting line in 110 plate appearances with Arizona this year. Manager Kirk Gibson made sure to limit Overbay's exposure to left-handed pitching (95 plate appearances vs. RHP, 15 plate appearances vs. LHP), using him as a part-time complement to Paul Goldschmidt.

I hope the Reds sign him. What a bum!

A .292 average with a .448 slugging percentage is a bum? Valuable bench bat. Much better than that Miguel Cairo bum.

perhaps Mr. MacRitchie was commenting on the quality of Mr. Overbay’s posterior?

          Lol!

He’s got okay platoon splits v. righties, whereas Todd Frazier has the same against lefties, so it wouldn’t be a bad depth move for the Reds as some insurance for Votto?

He’s got good numbers against the big end of the split, somebody will pick him up. It’s fashionable to link everybody to the Dodgers these days, so I’ll suggest them.

I don’t get it. Why are the Diamondbacks releasing Overbay? Looks like a good platoon or pinch hitter, especially since Goldschmidt is a righty.

Goldschmidt has really took off this season with everyday at bats, there is no need for him to be platooned at this point. Still, Overbay looks like a fairly useful bat, decent bench bats aren’t easy to find.

I hope anyone but the Reds sign him. It’s painful enough watching Ryan Ludwick rake against the Pirates, would not want to see the other over the hill vet who gave us nothing last year go there and get a rebirth.

Lol in Ludwick’s defense, he’s just flat raking against everybody.

If I were the Dodgers, I would sign Overbay and DFA Loney.

At this point, Overbay hits righties much better than Loney does.

Overbay would work for me in a platoon at 1B.

Hope the Orioles pick this guy up.

If I was the Reds, I’d pick him up in a heartbeat. Great vet, solid player. Would fit in perfect with the culture in Cincy’s clubhouse, plus he can spell Votto and PH when Votto comes back.

I think that The Giants need a big Lefthanded bat off their bench. Lyle Overbay is a big than average 1st Baseman and would give Bruce Bochy another bat in the line-up.

Why sign a veteran known for a certain modest level of performance, then run him out of town when he gives you exactly that?

If anything, Overbay was a little better than his career numbers this year.

I hear on a LA TALK SHOW, that The SF Giants are making contact with Lyle Overbay as a guy who can play 1st base so that they can send down Major League bust Brandon Belt he is the 2012 version of Daniel Ortimeyer.

      1) It’s Ortmeier, not “Ortimeyer”
      2) Brandon Belt is only 24, to say he is a bust is just absurd. Belt has more potential than Ortmeier ever had, and in no way should those two names be connected.
      3) If Overbay were to sign, he would be taking the spot of Huff rather than Belt, who he would share playing time with at 1st base.

Seattle Mariners should bring Lyle Overbay back home to play for the M’s and packaging Chone Figgins and Justin Smoak to the Miami Marlins for Mark Buehrle w/ Ozzie Guillen on the hot seat there. It may get the team to bring back Refuse To Lose in 2012 version like 17 years ago.
