Minor Moves: Yangervis Solarte

By charliewilmoth | January 12, 2014 at 8:28pm CDT

Here are today's minor moves from around baseball.

  • The Yankees have signed infielder Yangervis Solarte to a minor-league deal, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal tweets. Rosenthal notes that Solarte could figure into the Yankees' mix at second and third, along with Dean Anna, Scott Sizemore and Corban Joseph. Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts figure to play key roles at those positions. Solarte, 26, hit .276/.323/.403 in 577 plate appearances with the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate in Round Rock last year. He has never played in the Majors.

I like this minor league signing. It just gives the Yankees another player to look at and evaluate for a position of need with no risk.

He’s a young switch hitter? Good.

Bonus, he is awful at both sides of the plate.

If you check baseball-reference Solarte’s minor league numbers are pretty good. Here they are for 2012 and 2013:
          2012: .288 BA / .340 OBP / .405 SLG% with 11 HR’s
          2013: .276 BA / .323 OBP / .403 SLG% with 12 HR’s
LazerTwon must have him confused with someone else.

I checked his splits and he bats like .255 against RHP and .320-something against LHP which is great when you consider the yankees have too many lefties.

Defense is pretty pathetic at 3rd base, for 2nd base he’s serviceable although he could be better. But on a minor league deal with a look see at spring training it’s well worth it.

Yankees might have four switch hitters in the lineup at once next season. (Beltran, Solarte, Tex, and Roberts) I’m still not counting on Roberts to make an appearance throughout the season though.

Yankees are mixing Veterans who have won with young players who are hungry to make a name for themselves and win. I like Sizemore and Solarte on minor league deals. I also think it’s fair to consider Ronnier Musterlier for the 3rd base job. He can hit.

Forgot about him. It’d be nice if the farm could actually stay healthy though.

It would be more nice if their major league team could stay healthy too
