NL East Notes: Stanton, Phillies, Braves

By Steve Adams and Jeff Todd | October 8, 2014 at 8:08am CDT

Marlins superstar Giancarlo Stanton projects to land a $13MM payday in his second run through arbitration, per MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz (via MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes). That figure would be double Stanton’s salary from last year, and sets the table nicely for the 24-year-old as the team prepares to open extension negotiations.

Here are the latest front office moves from the NL East:

  • The Phillies will hire Johnny Almaraz as their new head of scouting, tweets Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com. Almaraz had served as the Braves’ director of international scouting. He will take over for the departed Marti Wolever.
  • Also, the Phillies announced that they have hired Rafael Chaves away from the Dodgers to serve as their new minor league pitching coordinator. Chaves filled the same role with L.A. from 2009-13 before serving as a special assistant of player personnel this past season.
  • The Braves have announced a series of front office shifts, most of which were already reported. Gordon Blakely and Roy Clark were named special assistants to the general manager, Brian Bridges was promoted to scouting director, and Dave Trembley has been hired as director of player development. Trembley’s assistant will be Jonathan Schuerholz, the son of club president John. David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution recaps the action amongst the Atlanta brass.

Cue the comments from Red Sox fans…

    Something like:
“How about Jackie Bradley Jr. for Stanton because the Red Sox can afford that salary?”

These aren’t comments that come from Red Sox fans, these are comments who come from people who want to pretend Red Sox fans make comments like this 😛

Absolutely true. Look at the trade proposals that include Betts. They are insulting and ridiculous. And not from the Red Sox fans but from everyone else.

I’ve met unreasonable people too 😛 The average Sox fan knows more about baseball than that. You an find loud examples from plenty of groups who hold uninformed opinions about a whole multitude of topics

Boston writers sure make these comments…. remember Cespedes for Stanton earlier this week?

Mentioning Stanton in your news article probably gets you so many more hits they just can’t resist xP

Also I’m pretty sure the talk was always package of prospects + Cespedes for next season in return for Stanton. Not a straight-up trade.

If that was even a sane trade proposal Boston would have to kick in cash, why would Miami be interested in Cespedes? He wouldn’t even be the centerpiece of a sane trade, the trade would have to be centered around Betts and Cespedes wouldn’t even make sense as a throw in.

As a Yankee fan, I might as well start the weird-trade ball rolling. A-Rod, Ichiro and $50M plus Zelous Wheeler for Stanton. Lots of versatility there. Good marketing opportunities. Help attract international attention, A-Rod has a big fan base in Florida, and Zelous corners the market in great names. If you twisted my arm, I might even agree to throw in come catching depth. Any interest?

Only if you take both….Except that the Yankees don’t own the rights to Young anymore–he’s a FA.

      “Marketing opportunities” huh?

AROD with his contract has about a negative $60MM value, I figure… because of how he would taint the acquiring team. Ichiro has the value of a box of left handed doorknobs.

How about Ryan Howard for AROD? That would be close to a fair deal. Ryan Howard is fits the Yankee mold too!

Except the Phillies don’t need an oft-injured player. A 3B. A 3B who can’t play the field. Or a low BA/high power hitter who hits away from the short porch.

ARod is all 3 of those things, and is owed money for an additional year after Howard’s contract will be over (also: he’s in line to start hitting his marketing bonuses for HRs without hitting too many more).

Gardner, Betance and Warren would interest most teams, obviously not in return for Stanton.

The Yankees definitely don’t have the pieces to acquire Stanton; plus, no team is going to trade for A-rod let alone take on any amount of A-rod’s contract, he is a PR nightmare.

So two players who’s combined age is like 80, a 28 year old rookie who can’t hit, and $50MM for Giancarlo Stanton? You’d be better off removing all the players and just trying to buy Stanton for $50MM.

OK, just to clear things up. I was suggesting something deliberately absurd, (and BJ and Rousher below seemed tuned in) to make the point that a lot of the trade proposals we see made by fans tend to overvalue their own players. Stanton is a terrific talent, and obviously the Marlins aren’t going to accept anything like that from the Yankees. But there is a tendency for many to say, even for a talent like Stanton “well, we can’t give up any of our top____ prospects, but how about take this low level guy and these expensive old ones.” I couldn’t think of a better example of expensive and old than A-Rod/Ichiro, nor “low level” than Zelous.

It’s the standard “I’ll trade you the guys I don’t want for your awesome player that I do want” thing. I get it 😉

But seriously, do you think the Marlins would be interested in A-Rod?

Just by doing a quick look at the guys on your roster who were probably brought by him (international amateur FA) – I see Bethancourt, Teheran, and Avilan. And looking at MLB’s list for top prospects, I see another 6 guys in there who were signed (most likely) because of him – including Peraza. It seems like the first good front office move we’ve made in a while.
