Yankees Outright Matt Tracy

By Steve Adams | June 4, 2015 at 8:11pm CDT

The Yankees have outrighted left-hander Matt Tracy off their 40-man roster, according to the club’s transactions page. With the move, the team’s 40-man roster stands at 38 players.

This marks the second time in 2015 that the Yankees have removed Tracy, 26, from their 40-man. Back in April, the Yankees designated Tracy for assignment and tried to get him through outright waivers, but he was claimed by the Marlins. Tracy, however, didn’t throw a pitch with the Marlins organization before being designated for assignment in Miami, and the Yankees wound up re-claiming him days later. It would seem then that the Yankees see plenty to like in Tracy but consider him a fringe option on the 40-man.

In 25 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season, Tracy has posted a 6.75 ERA, though he was substantially better in 2014. Last year, the former 24th-round pick worked to a combined 3.76 ERA with 5.3 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 150 2/3 innings between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre.

Rafael Soriano To Throw For Teams Next Thursday

By Steve Adams | June 4, 2015 at 7:21pm CDT

Free agent reliever Rafael Soriano will have an open throwing session for Major League clubs in the Dominican Republic next Thursday, his new representatives at Octagon announced (via Twitter). Soriano jumped from Scott Boras to Octagon last week, presumably due to the fact that he remains unsigned in early June.

Soriano, 35, did not go without interest from big league clubs this winter. He was tied to a number of clubs, including the Blue Jays, Marlins, Cubs and Twins at various points over the past several months — in some cases, even after the regular season began. However, no club has made an offer that was to the liking of Soriano and his now former agent. While their specific asking price remains unknown, reports following the Marlins’ most recent interest indicated that Miami simply didn’t feel Soriano would be enough of an upgrade over its internal options after watching him throw.

The former Nationals, Rays and Yankees closer will have the opportunity to convince other teams that Miami was incorrect in its assessment next week. However, Miami’s supposed review of Soriano’s arsenal isn’t the first underwhelming take on the right-hander’s arsenal that has been reported. Late in the offseason, Buster Olney of ESPN said that scouts felt Soriano’s stuff evaporated late in the 2014 season, as he pitched to an 6.48 ERA in the second half and ultimately lost his grip on the closer’s role to Drew Storen. Of course, quite a bit of time has passed both since that report and since the end of last season, so it’s entirely possible that Soriano is throwing much better than he was last September.

Earlier today, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said that he’s hoping to add a right-handed reliever to his bullpen, and obviously the club is more than familiar with Soriano, who spent two seasons there and served as the club’s closer in 2012 when Mariano Rivera was lost for the season due to a torn ACL.

The Blue Jays have long been said to be eyeing relief help, and while they clearly weren’t comfortable meeting his asking price in the past, it’s possible that Soriano’s financial goals have changed with new representation in tow. The Braves last night were said to be on the lookout for bullpen help as well, although that particular report indicated that they’d prefer not to spend big money to add it.

The Mariners and Dodgers are among the other teams reportedly seeking bullpen help, although as is the case each summer, there’s no shortage of clubs looking for relief upgrades. In a recent poll conducted by MLBTR’s Charlie Wilmoth, our readers pegged the Cubs, Blue Jays and Tigers, respectively, as the likeliest teams to add Soriano.

David Aardsma Opts Out Of Dodgers Contract

By Steve Adams | June 4, 2015 at 4:25pm CDT

Right-hander David Aardsma has opted out of his minor league contract with the Dodgers and is now a free agent, MLBTR has learned (Twitter link). The veteran righty had a June 1 opt-out clause that triggered a 72-hour window for the Dodgers to place him on the 25-man roster, which expired today.

The 33-year-old Aardsma has pitched quite well for L.A.’s Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City, working to an excellent 2.41 ERA with 11.1 K/9, 3.4 BB/9 and 15 saves in 18 2/3 innings. Aardsma recently explained to The Oklahoman’s Jacob Unruh that his offseason work in a strengthening program called Top Velocity helped him add a couple of ticks back to his fastball, which is now regularly sitting in the 91-93 mph range.

Aardsma enjoyed a successful run as the Mariners’ closer from 2009-10, tallying a 2.90 ERA with 9.6 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9 in 121 innings before hip surgery and Tommy John surgery put his career on hold. He made a brief return to the Majors late in 2012, throwing an inning for the Yankees, and he spent much of the 2013 campaign in the Mets’ bullpen, working to a 4.31 ERA in 39 1/3 innings.

In the 2013-14 offseaon, Aardsma signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals, and his 2014 success at Triple-A was similar, if not even greater than the success he has enjoyed thus far in 2015. However, a groin injury ended his 2014 season after 35 innings of 1.29 ERA ball with the Cardinals’ top minor league affiliate.

Aardsma is one of a handful of pitchers to opt out of his minor league deal in early June. We’ve also seen J.C. Gutierrez, Robert Coello and Kevin Correia opt out of their deals with the Giants, and lefty Dana Eveland opted out of his Red Sox contract last night. The recent influx of experienced arms on the free agent market will give teams that are searching for bullpen help a deeper pool from which to draw.

Just today, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said that his club is on the lookout for right-handed relief options. The Braves, too, are said to be trying to trade for relief help, but it stands to reason that their reluctance to spend significant money could lead them to look to recent opt-outs as well.

Cashman: Yankees Seeking Right-Handed Relievers

By Steve Adams | June 4, 2015 at 4:21pm CDT

Speaking to Scott Braun and Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said today that adding a right-handed option to his current bullpen mix will be a priority over the next couple of months (SoundCloud audio link). The fact that the team’s acquisition of David Carpenter did not work out has left the Yankees with the need for another righty, Cashman explained.

“I do need to find a right-handed arm for the bullpen here at some point,” said Cashman. “We have [Andrew] Miller, [Dellin] Betances, [Justin] Wilson, [Chasen] Shreve, [Jacob] Lindgren and [Chris] Capuano, and Esmil Rogers is the long man. So really, outside of Betances, there’s only one right-handed arm out there, but he’s the long man. I’ve got a number of lefties out there in Wilson, Shreve and Lindgren that all can get righties out, and at least that’s the benefit of those guys. It’s not as much of a pressing issue, but I certainly would love to get an arm that I think Carpenter is, but just not here in New York. I think Carpenter will be that for somebody else.”

Cashman’s praise of the recently designated Carpenter would seem to suggest that he feels there’s a chance to trade the right-hander, whom he acquired alongside Shreve from the Braves this winter in exchange for Manny Banuelos. With a manageable $1.275MM salary, strong 2013-14 performances under his belt, a fastball that has remained in the mid-90s (94.9 mph average this season), and two-and-a-half years of control remaining, it does seem that the Yankees will receive trade interest in Carpenter.

The Yankees do have some options at the Triple-A level, which Cashman touched on, mentioning Diego Moreno and Nick Rumbelow, specifically. He would not, however, rule out exploring options outside the organization. “…[I]f there’s some opportunities out there somewhere else, we’ll look at those, too.”

Asked in a more general sense if the Yankees will be players for some of the bigger names on the trade market this summer, Cashman sidestepped the issue to some extent but did reveal reluctance to part with talent from the upper levels of his farm system. Cashman mentioned Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Eric Jagielo, Greg Bird and Bryan Mitchell by name when discussing some of the more appealing minor leaguers that are nearing the Majors. “It’s just harder when those guys are so close that you can see where and how they could fit with your club and potentially be performers and financial offsets to a lot of the commitments you already have,” Cashman said. “…There are certain guys GMs look at and say, ’You know what? If this player is going to fail or succeed, it’s going to be with this organization and this organization alone.’ We think some of these guys could be in that category.”

Outrighted: Tommy Field, Gary Brown

By Jeff Todd | June 4, 2015 at 2:54pm CDT

Here are the day’s minor moves:

  • Middle infielder Tommy Field has accepted an outright assignment with the Rangers after clearing waivers, club executive VP of communications John Blake announced. The 28-year-old will provide a depth option for the big league club. He has seen 45 turns at bat this year with the major league club, slashing .195/.250/.366.
  • The Angels have outrighted outfielder Gary Brown to Triple-A after he cleared waivers, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times tweets. Brown was designated for assignment on Monday to clear a 40-man spot. The former first-round pick has hit  a meager .202/.254/.331 this year at Salt Lake, but he’ll have a chance to stay in a familiar environment as he looks to engineer a turnaround and earn a crack at the big leagues.

Red Sox Designate Carlos Peguero

By Jeff Todd | June 4, 2015 at 2:31pm CDT

The Red Sox have designated outfielder Carlos Peguero for assignment, the club announced (via Tim Britton of the Providence Journal, on Twitter). His roster spot will go to the just-acquired Alejandro De Aza.

Boston added Peguero just over a week ago, and he saw only six plate appearances with his new club. He’s always had plenty of pop — as his 30 Triple-A home runs last year attest — but Peguero strikes out quite a bit while walking only at the league average. Still, his left-handed power bat holds reasonable appeal, though it remains to be seen whether another team will be inclined to give the out-of-options slugger an active roster spot

Red Sox Acquire Alejandro De Aza

By Jeff Todd | June 4, 2015 at 12:06pm CDT

TODAY: Boston will pay around $1MM of De Aza’s remaining salary, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal report on Twitter. That’s no small amount, of course, but it does mean that Baltimore retains most of the financial burden going forward.

YESTERDAY: The Red Sox on Wednesday bolstered their outfield depth by acquiring an experienced corner option from the Orioles in the form of Alejandro De Aza, Baltimore announced. The O’s will send cash considerations to the Sox along with De Aza in exchange for Double-A right-hander Joe Gunkel. In order to accommodate De Aza on their 40-man roster, the Red Sox have transferred righty Brandon Workman to the 60-day DL, the club announced.

Alejandro De Aza

De Aza, added by the O’s at last year’s trade deadline, is owed $5MM this season, of which about $3.39MM remains. He’s a somewhat curious add for a Red Sox club that is already flush with outfield options and recently picked up fellow lefty-swinging corner outfielder Carlos Peguero in a trade with the Rangers. Boston also has Mookie Betts, Hanley Ramirez and Rusney Castillo on the roster as its starting trio in the outfield, with veterans Daniel Nava and Shane Victorino on the DL. (One would think that Peguero’s spot could eventually be in jeopardy when one of those veterans is nearing a return.)

The 31-year-old De Aza owns a meager .214/.277/.359 triple-slash in his 112 plate appearances thus far. But his track record is better; over the 2012-14 seasons, De Aza owns an exactly-league-average 100 OPS+ (and, if you prefer, a 100 wRC+). With average offensive production and strong defense, that has made him a solidly regular in the corner outfield.

As I noted when he was designated, the Orioles had ample reason to strike a deal to save what money they could. With more than five years of service, De Aza would have been eligible to reject an outright assignment (assuming he cleared waivers) and thereby become a free agent without sacrificing his rather significant guaranteed salary.

Gunkel is a 23-year-old who was pitching at Double-A in the Boston organization. He rated as Boston’s 26th-best prospect entering the year, per Baseball America, which says that he profiles as a reliever in the long run. Over 18 1/3 innings this year, he’s allowed eight earned runs with 22 strikeouts against eight walks.

That seems like a decent get for the O’s, though we’ll need to learn how much money has changed hands before really evaluating the deal.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports first reported the trade (on Twitter).

AL West Notes: Trumbo, Angels, Rangers, Montgomery

By Jeff Todd | June 4, 2015 at 11:48am CDT

The AL West may not be the best division in baseball, but it could be the most interesting to watch at the trade deadline. At the bottom of the division, the Athletics could be one of the biggest sellers — or could still conceivably buy if they make a run. The Mariners have just declared themselves all-in (as if that needed emphasizing) by adding Mark Trumbo, while the Angels are in a similar boat and have both money and needs. And then there’s the Astros, who could take advantage of their surprising six-game lead by adding arms, and the streaking Rangers.

We’ll talk Texas later today on the podcast with Dallas Morning News beat reporter Evan Grant; for now, here’s the latest from the division:

  • Adding Trumbo is something of a sign of desperation from the Mariners, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports writes. Some around the league think they got him for a nice price, says Rosenthal, but the club obviously has quite a deep hole to dig out of at this juncture.
  • While the slugging Trumbo is obviously not going to provide good on-base numbers to a team that already lacks in that department, that doesn’t mean that the Mariners did not add productivity to their lineup, Dave Cameron writes at Fangraphs. Research shows that, for a team that is already filled with low-OBP/high-slugging bats, a similar player is actually more valuable than an equivalently productive but oppositely-skilled hitter. Meanwhile, Jeff Sullivan tackles the deal from all sides, explaining that the deal is not all that impactful for either club.
  • Trumbo’s former club, the Angels, never seriously pursued a reunion, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. While the team could use a bat in left field, and the club would consider adding a truly impactful right-handed hitter, it prefers to add a lefty swinger to the middle of the order. All said, per Shaikin, the Halos felt they are better off waiting to see who else becomes available over the summer.
  • There could be more Rangers prospects coming behind Joey Gallo and Chi Chi Gonzalez, writes Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. He suggests that backstop Tomas Telis could get a call, particularly with Robinson Chirinos nursing a sore hand after being hit by a pitch. Fortunately, as Grant also reports, the 30-year-old seems to have avoided a DL stint (or worse). He’s off to a great start, hitting .208/.328/.465 in 124 plate appearances.
  • Mariners lefty Mike Montgomery finally made his debut, putting up six quality innings, as Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. Now 25, Montgomery was once considered a top-100 prospect with the Royals, though his star has faded in recent years. Since coming to Seattle in exchange for Erasmo Ramirez this spring, however, Montgomery has produced an encouraging 3.74 ERA over 53 Tripe-A innings while posting a strong 8.0 K/9 against 2.5 BB/9 — all much better than he’s shown recently in the upper minors.

Randy Arozarena Leaves Cuba

By Jeff Todd | June 4, 2015 at 10:53am CDT

Cuban infielder/outfielder Randy Arozarena, a 20-year-old prospect, has left the island with intentions of coming to Major League Baseball, Ben Badler of Baseball America reports. He joins a growing stream of interesting Cuban players at various stages of qualifying for free agency.

Badler and BA tabbed Arozarena as the nation’s ninth-best prospect recently, calling him “a quick-twitch athlete with a lean, lively frame.” With good overall hitting ability and plus speed, Arozarena probably will not need to provide much power to have value. But the scouting report — which you’ll want to check out for a full breakdown (subscription required, and recommended) — indicates that the line-drive hitter could conceivably produce double-digit home runs with some adjustments and growth.

It remains to be seen where clubs will view him defensively: he’s spent time in center and left field after starting out as a middle infielder and also seeing action at third. The tools are there for him to play a premium defensive position down the line, says Badler, though it seems that there’s plenty of development left for him in that regard.

Arozarena will be subject to international spending limits when he signs. Given his profile it’s a good bet that he’ll go to a team that is willing to incur a two-year timeout to add him (likely, in conjunction with other significant outlays).

It’s obviously far to soon to guess as to Arozarena’s market, not least of which because he is just beginning an often-lengthy process of establishing residency and attaining free-agent status. But it is safe to say that those teams that are already set to face bans on pool-bound international signings over $300K (Angels, D’Backs, Rays, Red Sox, Yankees) will almost certainly be out of the race.
