Blue Jays Deal For David Price “Imminent”

By Jeff Todd | July 30, 2015 at 7:45am CDT

11:28am: A deal sending Price to Toronto is “imminent,” Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports tweets.

It’s unconfirmed, but rival execs expect Daniel Norris and Anthony Alford to be in the deal, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (Twitter links).

11:17am: As Toronto emerges, other suitors seem to be falling back in the discussion. The Yankees “have tried” to join the discussion, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post, but it’s not clear they’re willing to include as much in the way of top prospects. The Giants are “pessimistic” of getting something done, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have no plans of including Alex Wood — if they acquire him — in deals to any other teams, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com tweets.

11:05am: The Jays are “closing in” on a deal for Price, Heyman tweets.

10:58am: Toronto has emerged as a “strong favorite,” Heyman reports. A deal could come together quickly, he adds.

10:48am: The Blue Jays are making a “major push” to acquire star lefty David Price, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports on Twitter. Toronto has long been said to be pursuing one or more arms to bolster its staff, and the ace lefty would certainly do that and more.

While the presence of the Jays on the market for Price is not exactly unexpected, it’s notable that the team intends to be a serious contender for his services. Toronto already used several significant trade pieces to acquire star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, and has been rumored to be discussing a range of options in that regard.

The Dodgers have frequently been mentioned as the most likely club to land Price, as Los Angeles still seemingly wants to add a top-quality arm after missing on Cole Hamels. But the Dodgers are still working to complete a complicated deal with the Braves and Marlins that would have major implications for the pursuit of Price. Other teams, too, remain potential challengers for the service of Price, one of the game’s most durable, highest-quality starters.

All said, Toronto’s participation in the market ought to drive up the ask on the veteran southpaw. The Jays still have several highly appealing young pieces, including young starters such as Daniel Norris and Aaron Sanchez, that could theoretically be dangled, though it remains unclear what kind of package Toronto will offer — let alone what Detroit is looking to accomplish in a trade.

AA has made one bad move but it was real bad… Bringing in Dickey. Since then pretty well everything was pretty sharp. As far as Price I am sure AA will be careful. They are on the edge for a playoff spot and the most reasonable shot is catching the Twins. Forget catching the Yankees. Someone like Pentecost a decent catching prospect makes sense.
Jays will not need a catcher for five years.

Norris as the headliner is the only thing that makes sense to me. It’ll probably be 3 of the 4 guys Norris, Pompey, Penetecost and Alford, whomever DET is higher on

Why would the Tigers want Tulo? They have a young, cost-controlled 80-grade defender already at SS. They don’t need an offensive upgrade.

Let’s go Toronto, make this happen!
Given the age of some of Toronto’s key bats, we can’t be sure how long the team will be competitive. Take the shot! And Price is the perfect arm to use to take that shot.
I’ll be rooting for them, either way.

I say they did more then stay with their hands in thier pocket. Sure they won’t get hamels and maybe not price either.but they sure did a lot to help improve the team

They are in 1st by 6 or 7 games, why should they make a Major move?

I’m obviously not comapring this team to the 2009 Yankees team, but all that team did at the trade deadline was get Jerry Hairston Jr. And they were in Second place going into the Second half of the season.

There’s still plenty of other names available. Don’t overreact. It’s not like this puts Toronto in the playoffs

Because while I’m confident they will make the playoffs, they also do not have what is necessary to get out of the first round. It’s certaintly not what any Yanks fan wants to hear, but it’s the truth.

adding a starter for the playoffs would be good, especially on the caliber of price. they really dont need to pay a high price for a position player as those contributions are less in the playoffs.

Remember the Cy Young trio of Scherzer/Verlander/Price against the Orioles whose ace was Chris Tillman? How many games did the trio win – Zero

In an era where complete games are very rare, having a very strong bullpen seems to be just as if not more important than having a true ace.

The Yankees shouldn’t do a lot right now. They can’t really change the complexion of the team’s chances all that much this year–they kind of are what they are, and maybe that’s good enough to make the playoff, and maybe they will fade. But they aren’t championship material, unless they get very lucky. So, why squander the future for an iffy present?

Think you are underrating the yankees chances just a little bit. They have found the offense again this year. The pitching isn’t elite, but its been good enough. They are 14 games over .500, they have the 2nd best record in the AL, they have a winning record against all contenders except toronto (which they have 13 more games to play), and they haven’t looked over matched against a contending team yet. They even swept the Royals earlier this year. This team has a real chance to go far this year. Not sure how anyone can say they don’t have enough to get out of the first round? They are 2nd in runs and the only team ahead of them Toronto might not even make the playoffs. Their competition is KC, Houston, LAA, and whoever wins the wild card and none of those teams are teams the yankees have struggled with.

Unless they plan to spend some money next year Norris can’t be included in the trade. Rotation of Stroman, Hutchinson and 3 waiver grabs will put this team in a worse place next year.

If AA includes Norris then he clearly fears for his job.

You’re forgetting that it’s Stroman, Hutchison and Sanchez with AA having somewhere approaching $25M to fill out the rotation. Or you pick up the option on Dickey and have $15M for the final starter.

Can the Yankees please make a move. Yes we’re in first but there’s still two months left to this season. You give the blue jays Price and they will make a stronger run at the East. Plus the Yankees have holes. Tanaka and Pineda HAVEN’T pitched like ACE’s on a regular basis. We need another good arm to support this team. CC is trash!

I’m actually glad the Dodgers aren’t going after Price. It’s just too much to give up for a 2 month rental, who would only start 3 times in a playoff series. If we didn’t have Kershaw or Grienke I would be all on board but I just don’t see the reasoning on why you would give up that much for a #3 starter, Wood/Latos or more then capable of carrying that slack. Plus Wood is under control the next 3 years and we have our future SS/2b in Peraza, which would allow Seagar to potentially move to 3b.
