Yankees To Promote Luis Severino

By Zach Links | July 31, 2015 at 4:13pm CDT

Luis Severino’s next start will be in the majors, Yankees GM Brian Cashman told reporters, including Sweeny Murti of WFAN (on Twitter). Severino’s name came up in trade rumors in recent days – unsurprising given his upside – but the Bombers did not part with him.

While there were no true untouchables in the Yankees’ farm system this summer, Aaron Judge and Luis Severino came “close” to earning that label, George A. King III of the New York Post recently wrote.  Heading into the season, Baseball America ranked Severino as the No. 35 prospect in the country.  The right-hander got the bump up to Triple-A this season, pitching to a 1.91 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 11 starts.

Cashman should still be fired for making zero moves that help this team. I will be shocked if they hold onto this 6 game lead on the blue jays now.

Severino being called up is FANTASTIC news. You guys need to chill out. If he had given the farm away for a rental, you would be complaining about that. The Yanks have 6 games on the Blue Jays and even with the acquisitions they made, the Yanks are still firing on all cylinders. Not doing anything wasn’t a good move, but neither is giving up the farm. We need to keep our home grown talent.

There wasn’t anyone left to give up the farm for. Hamels was the only logical choice, but that goes for every single team in the league. I don’t mind giving up prospects, but not for a 2 month rental like Price.

I don’t think there were many trades the Yankees could have made and be comfortable. Besides Miami, there weren’t any teams looking to offload contracts.

This is really exciting, he has so much potential and he’s another one of those guys that’s just fun to watch play the game. I’d much rather be giving him this chance to show he can carry that dominance from the minors to the majors than to have paid the price some other teams did in some of the deals that transpired. If we couldn’t find a deal that made sense, this is the next best thing.

@East Coast Bias agreed 100%. Lest we not forget, the Dynasty Years were possible because of home grown talent. (Jeter, Bernie, Jorge, Andy, Mo) Pieces were added via trades, but we hung on to the right prospects. I don’t understand why anyone would be unhappy with hanging onto + prospects that have the ability to help the team within a year or 2 or even this year (see Severino)

So again, to anyone that is ready to crucify Cashman, remember that when the new core 4 (Judge, Bird, Ref, and Severino) are all up and helping us to #28

Eh, let’s be careful about throwing the next Dynasty Years and Core Four label out there, you’re hanging your hat on some pretty high standards right there, and a LOT would need to go right for things to be even close to that situation again. I agree with the gist of what you’re saying though, what made those clubs so successful is they held onto the right talent, and clearly Cashman holds the current talent at a high enough standard to show restraint in dealing it.

Point taken, however, this is how it started. Just throwing it out there. Look, we could have gotten Hammels. No question about it, but consider the cost. Plus consider that the AL East is an absolute s*it show this year. Even with the aging team, we are still 6 games up. ARod and Tex are having Renaissance years, Gardy found a power stroke, Nova has looked great since coming back from TJ… On and on. We are in the midst of a good year so far. I am confident we will continue.

You would think that with the failure of our pitching prospects in the last decade or so that NYY fans would be cynical like I am, but I guess they have short memories. If one of them pans out you’re happy. If 2 of them pan out you’re ecstatic. No way Ref is anything more than an AAAA player though. Judge may be a nice bat but by no means is he type of player that can put a lineup on his back like a Trout/Harper/Stanton can. People need to stop with the second coming nonsense.

Exactly.. I couldn’t agree more.. What happens to Toronto is they miss the post season this year? They would have given up their best pitching prospect for 2 months of Price for nothing.. Luckily they will have Stroman back next year to fill the void but AA took an awfully big gamble on Price.. Even though I doubt Norris amounts to much until he goes to a National League team he was still their #1 prospect..

He has been compared to Pedro Martinez so yeah if he hits his ceiling I wouldn’t see why a Cy Young would be out of the question.. In the midseason prospect rankings he is ranked higher than Hoffman, Norris, Appel and many other well known pitching prospects.. He is #17 in all of baseball with Judge being #13.. Only 10 teams have higher ranked prospects than Severino.. MVP to a pitcher is quite a stretch though.. This kid has some talent but he isn’t Kershaw.. If Judge figures out how to hit breaking balls squarely I would say he has MVP potential though..

Judge and Bird? So give up Beltran and Teixeira’s replacements for a pitcher when the free agent pitching pool is going to be overflowing with talent? No way!! There is a reason all of these teams want Judge.. What if the Angels had traded Trout in 2010 for a #2-#3 pitcher? They would look really foolish today.. Now if the Indians were willing to trade Kluber for Severino and Judge I would be all over that.. They could even have Sanchez with them.. Bird is the overall best hitting prospect that the Yankees have and he is the one I would view as the only true untouchable.. If Teixeira gets hurt next year (which is more likely to happen than not) Bird will be ready to take over.. The past couple of years when Teix was on the DL 1st base was a pretty easy out for other teams..

I don’t disagree with your assessment. The Tribe needs impact bats, and that’s exactly what Judge and Bird would’ve provided. If we’re giving up good, controllable pitching, dealing from a strength, we need to add to a weakness. Speaking of which:

Will you please please PLEASE take Swisher back.

@cookiemonsterBird is in AAA with a .797 OPS and came into the season as #120 overall on FG prospects. Whoever this Dan Vogelbach guy is, he’s only in AA and didn’t even make the top 200 on that list (thoough he did get an honorable mention)

Now of course I can’t argue how great the Cubs farm is, but don’t act as if Bird is a nobody, because he isn’t.

Every team would want Carrasco. Like you said, 28 years and controlled for a while, with advanced stats showing that he hasn’t pitched to his potential yet. You know who else would want him? The Indians. So if they move him, it would be for an exorbitant amount, and teams would still line up to pay.

What I’m saying is.. he would be too expensive.

I wouldn’t bring him up this season. 320 minor league innings. I believe they are rushing him. Most he has thrown in a season is 113 innings. He is already at 99 this season. Hope they don’t blow his arm out.

He threw 116 last year.. This year they have been limiting him to only 5 innings.. So, granted his ERA is artificially low because it usually takes until the 3rd trip through the order before hitters adjust to a pitcher he should be quite effective against MLB hitters for the final couple of months this year.. Being that his arm has not been taxed through long games this year he should be fine for 8-9 starts.. I doubt he does more than limited bullpen work after that.. In all honesty I see him going straight into the bullpen for the Yankees and Warren moving back into the rotation..

Bradley would easily replace Ells? Sarcasm? If so, nice one.. It wasn’t that long ago when every Boston fan viewed JBJ as untouchable and the second coming of Mays.. Now its doubtful they could trade him for a solid #4 pitcher.. Should have traded him for Hamels when Amaro viewed him as a centerpiece of a possible trade..

What young cost controlled arms are available for 2nd tier prospects? Young arms are pretty much what every team in baseball wants and to think any team is going to get them for 2nd tier prospects is laughable.. Just because some “homer” Yankees fans view our 6-10 prospects as top notch sure fire everyday players in the majors doesn’t mean that is true.. Just remember that in all of baseball there are roughly 175 2nd tier prospects available and every team’s fans view them as major league studs..

I agree we need better but get over it the Orioles won for 17-18 years with a .200 hitting slick glove SS. He’s and sake the MLB total average is .253 the shift has worked. I’m sick of the Drew obsession he was a good signing 6-19 on this trip. Amazing second baseman
