The Yankees fell to the Blue Jays 3-1 today, but the pitching of Luis Severino was definitely a bright spot for the Bombers. In six innings of work, Severino struck out a career-high nine batters while walking three and surrendering five total hits. As Brandon Kuty of the Star-Ledger writes, it’s an encouraging sign for the Yankees, who refused to deal the promising youngster at the deadline. Here’s a look at the other teams in the AL East…
- David Ortiz lobbied the Red Sox to go out and get slugger Nelson Cruz, but Boston didn’t make a play for him, WEEI’s John Tomase writes. “He was all in,” Cruz said. “Anytime we played, he reminded me that he wanted me here. It meant a lot. I’m a fan of him, and also a good friend. When a player like him, a future Hall of Famer, requests for you to play with him, it’s definitely something that grabs you.” The Red Sox might be in a different position today if they went out and got Cruz to play left field instead of Hanley Ramirez, Tomase writes. Ramirez got a four-year, $88MM deal from the Red Sox while Cruz signed for $57MM over four.
- The Orioles should try and lock up newly-acquired outfielder Gerardo Parra, Peter Schmuck of The Baltimore Sun opines. Parra, he writes, gives the O’s the on-base potential and the defensive ability that they lose when Nick Markakis left via free agency. Parra, who is earning $6MM in 2015, will probably be in line for a pay raise.
- The Rays shouldn’t wait to promote pitcher Blake Snell, Steve Kinsella of Sports Talk Florida writes. The 22-year-old former first-round pick has looked great in five Triple-A starts, posting a 1.48 ERA with 12.9 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9.

I said soon as they made that deal with Hanley they over paid for him by 30 million. I dont think any other team was gonna make a offer near that. He should have been tops 3/45 and how do you justify giving him the LF spot when he never played there? Horrible deal but they need pitching more then they need Nelson Cruz. Cruz is a upgrade over Hanley but any one who fallows baseball knew they where not going to be better then last year when all they had to start the year was a bunch of #4 pitchers and a #2 in Buckholz.
cookiemonster
toronto was doing fine without an ace, but their offense produced all year. if hannigan and christian vasquez dont get hurt this is probably a much better team this year. hanley was worth way more than 3/45, maybe 3 years but way more dollars, the 2 years before this he was a stud.
Mark 21
Can you show how he is worth WAY more then what I thought? He is horrible with the glove and has been for some time now. He is a DH type of player going into this season as well as last year. He defense will cost runs and has showed us just that all year. So how does a DH type player get more then 3/45 on the open market?
cookiemonster
because he was playing ss which is the most demanding position. he was worth 9 war in the 2 years combined prior
cookiemonster
the rays always go slow with pitching prospects, and at this point they should. keep him down and dont start his clock until may next year for the most and best team control possible.
lunchmoney
Snell is going to be a beast. Archer-Snell as 1-2 is sick bruh.
cookiemonster
matt moore was even better in the minors. him and price are the only 2 pitchers the rays went quick with.

Cruz had the PED issue, and I’m not sure Boston wants to willfully associate themselves with that (as strange as this may seem to Red Sox fans, there are a lot of people who think that the sainted Ortiz himself’s positive test wasn’t some horrible accident.) And, I think the Red Sox FO wants younger, more athletic, more versatile players.
Mark 21
But they didnt get that with Hanley. They got a player on his decline that was horrible with the glove last year and despite what people think was never a great fielder. .967 % is not what most people call more athletic and versatile. He is really a DH player at this point of his career. Cruz would have been better for them in almost every way possible even with the ped past. And the Sox had 8 players on the unofficial 103 list in 2003. They have had there share of PED use.

The Dude ( Cruz ) is on the Juice, Dominican Republic Chemists and Doctors have used the Clinics to Develop Anti -Detection Chemicals to Avoid MLB antiquated testing methods. Players don’t get Better with Age unless the are putting into the Body a substance that regenerates the cells quicker. Big Papa , is an unrepentant Liar and Cheater himself!

You’d better hope that NoAZPhilsfan doesn’t see your comment…you’ll get a long, detailed, and articulate response to the current dope testing

Remember when you were rambling on in April about how Ortiz should be traded?
Ken M.
Severino has only pitched 3 games. 17 innings. Let the scouting reports get around and in a month and reassess. Eduardo Rodriguez had a lot better numbers his first 3 games and then………. he has pitched to a 6+ ERA. Severino is only 10 months younger than him.

The article written by Tomase is based on a lot of hindsight. It ignores the fact that Ramirez has been a better hitter than Cruz for his career (and doesn’t come with a PED past) and is younger. The Ramirez deal looked like a better signing than the Cruz one during the offseason and I think it is silly to think they should’ve chosen Cruz over Ramirez when that was far from the case just a few month ago.

Despite having the best offense, the Jays were a .500 team (51-51) prior to trading for Price. It’s nearly impossible to succeed without an ace, losing Lester is the primary reason the Sox are a last place team again. Nobody could have imagined his replacement, Porcello, would be this bad.
Hanley would have been an okay 3B, but he’s JD Drew in dreads … dude can’t stay healthy even if he were a DH. The Pablo deal was the big mistake, he had been on a steady decline for 3 straight seasons … obviously the weight is a factor as he ages.
Jorge Soler Powered
Well, anyone without any Red Sox bias knew Porcello was never going to put up ace numbers.
stormie
You can’t exactly claim Price is responsible for them going 15-3 since they got him. In fact, technically they’ve been better when he hasn’t started (13-2) than when he has (2-1). Run differential said the Jays were bound to break out soon, ace or not.

Hanley ramiez has a bad glove and gets injured a lot, He should be only playing DH but because of ortiz, hanley has to play LF which he is terrible at.

If the O’s think they’ll be able to re-sign Parra for anything close to the $6 million he’s earning this year, they better think again. He’s attractive for a number of teams in that aside from Upton and Heyward, Parra is the only other FA OF under 30 and he’s been a very productive hitter in 2015. He’s going to command 3-4 years of around $10-11 million per year.

So the moral of the story is that Papi is a better talent evaluator and value assessor than everyone currently in the Red Sox front office. More reason why DiPoto should replace the current crew, rather than merely advise them.
