Here’s the latest from The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo…
- The Braves are one of multiple teams who have asked the Giants about Joe Panik and Matt Duffy in trade talks but San Francisco isn’t interesting in dealing either young infielder. Panik and Duffy may have come up in discussions with the Braves over pitching, as Cafardo reports the Giants have discussed Julio Teheran and Shelby Miller.
- Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon is generating “a ton of interest” and Miami is at least listening. It would take a controllable, front-of-the-rotation arm to really get the Marlins’ attention, however, and it “seems unlikely” that Gordon would go anywhere. I have to agree that dealing Gordon would be a stunning move even for the Marlins; if anything, the club is far more likely to extend him, as has been noted in recent reports.
- The Reds and Red Sox discussed a trade for Aroldis Chapman, but Cincinnati wanted more from Boston than the Sox eventually sent to the Padres to land Craig Kimbrel. That would represent a stunningly high asking price for a closer who is only under contract through the 2016 season. Kimbrel, by contrast, is owed $25MM through the 2017 season and Boston has a $13MM club option on his services for 2018.
- Andrew Miller is “atop” the Astros’ list of closer targets and Mark Melancon is also under consideration. We’d already heard about Houston’s interest in acquiring a top reliever earlier today, with Miller’s name included with the likes of Chapman, Brad Boxberger and Ken Giles.
- Speaking of Melancon, the Pirates closer tells Cafardo that he’s keeping an open mind about trade speculation. “I love the Pirates. I love our group of guys and would love to stay here, but I also understand the business of it. Every organization has a different business plan, and if the Pirates feel they need to deal me, then I understand that. Our people haven’t said a word to me about the possibility, so until that changes, I’m assuming I’m starting the year with the Pirates.”
- The Twins are another team looking for relief help and they’ve also received a lot of interest about third baseman Trevor Plouffe. There has been speculation that Plouffe could be moved to make way for Miguel Sano at third base, especially if the Twins come to an agreement with Byung-Ho Park.
- Though Brett Gardner’s name has surfaced in trade talks, it’s “not a slam dunk” that the Yankees would part with him since he’s a clubhouse leader. As CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman did yesterday, Cafardo also downplays the idea of a Gardner-for-Starlin Castro trade, noting that the Yankees would only trade Gardner if they got a starting pitcher back.
- Five general managers told Cafardo that they wouldn’t take Hanley Ramirez in a trade even if the Red Sox covered at least half of Ramirez’s remaining salary. Ramirez is owed $66MM through 2018 and he has a $22MM vesting option for 2019, so even at a reduced rate, that’s still a hefty price for a player coming off such a rough season on and off the field.
- Cafardo feels the Cubs and Giants have the best chance at signing John Lackey, who wants to remain in the National League. The Cardinals have also “kept their toes in the water” for his services. The Red Sox have checked in on Lackey but are more focused on landing an ace starter.
- John Boggs, Trevor Cahill’s agent, said his client looks to be a starter again “but he would accept a bullpen spot if he doesn’t secure a starting job.”

Dodgers will get Stanton and Gordon for Puig, Urias, and DeLeon.
dstuart
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Thegreatandpowerfulsimba
Does Stanton have a no trade clause? It looks pretty fair if u remove Gordon. I thought Dodgers were wanting to drop payroll in the coming seasons?
Philliesfan4life
which is why I think they don’t bring greinke back

The Reds are a joke. They’ll never move Chapman if that’s what they’re asking.
blueberryninja
They’ll move him. It may end up being like how Kimbrel was moved last year – before opening day. It’ll get done though. Someone will be willing to pay up for the best closer in the game.
joshbresser
Not if they’re asking for more than Kimbrel got. That’s a pipe dream. They won’t get close to that much.
joparx
The Reds better get more realistic…1 year of a closer isn’t worth what was given up for kimbrel…kimbrel isn’t even worth what was given up for kimbrel
Thegreatandpowerfulsimba
Only thing Cahill should be throwing in an mlb stadium is peanuts…
CascadianAbroad
Cahill did a nice job for the Cubs out of the bullpen in the second half. I’m sure he’d love to return to a rotation somewhere, but his velocity was up as a reliever. A lot of these guys let their ego block a clear road to success.
Philliesfan4life
Plouffe will be a great fit for the angels, Wilson + Bedrosion should get the deal done
Sky14
Doubt the Twins would have much or any interest in that package.
Philliesfan4life
the angels might have to add something else
myaccount
I don’t think there’s any “might” about it. It’s almost certain they would have to include more. CJ Wilson isn’t even necessarily considered an asset.
jabmets
Zack wheeler and a prospect for Gordon. Get it done sandy
hojostache
Gordon is very good, but the Mets have Rosario in the wings (bumping Flores to 2B). Wheeler needs to come back and re-establish value as a #2, fringe #1 if he can be more efficient and go deeper in games.
formerlyz
As a Marlins fan, SIGN ME UP FOR THAT! The Mets wouldnt be dumb enough to do that though, obviously
myaccount
Wheeler (who might not be the same) and a prospect of unspecified worth? If that’s all it takes, I hope the M’s kick the tires on Gordon and consider moving him back to SS.
mrnatewalter
I just can’t see the Giants moving Panik. Certainly not Duffy.
Yes, they have Tomlinson. Yes, they have Arroyo coming in the future. They even have Lucius Fox a ways off… but I don’t see them moving either guy. Just not worth it.
R.D.
Keep Duffy, he looks like Chris Johnson part 2. Panik on the other hand, yeah Braves could use him.
williemaysfield
Duffy is an outstanding defensive player and would be a serviceable SS in the big leagues. While their bats seem similar Duffys glove makes him far more valuable than Chris Johnson. The Giants arent trading Duffy, defiantly not for anybody on the Braves.
hopper15
“While their bats seem similar” Not sure how they seem similar when Johnson has had a sub .300 OBP the last 2 years.
hopper15
Chris Johnson part 2? I’m sorry but that’s ridiculous.
arc89
Why would the redsox trade that much for another closer when they have such weak starting pitching. Their bullpen will not be a problem as much as their thin starting pitching. The giants are not going to get a top starting pitcher with their weak minor league system. If they want a top starter they will need to give up Duffy or panik.
Philliesfan4life
I believe the giants will sign greinke, and then the dodgers replace him with Zimmermann or Cueto
54scooterb
Zimmermann will sign with a team in either league who plays in the Central Division….my guess anyways.
mike244
Actually, the Redsox pitching isn’t terrible. It lines up with pretty much every other team in the ALE not named the Rays. Their bullpen with Kimbrel, Koji, and Tazawa should be great.
As seen with the Royals, you dont need a great pitching staff to win. A good offense and bullpen can do the trick.
petrie000
the problem there is that outside the Rays the pitching in the rest of the ALE is actually quite terrible…
arc89
Problem is the redsox have 1 guy that is top of rotation pitcher and he is always hurt. The rest of the staff are average arms and when you get into the playoffs you need top starters.
hojostache
BOS has a bunch of #3, #4, #5 pitchers. They may be able to compete in a weak pitching AL East, but they will get crushed by better teams.
jmg s.
The Giants have some good pitching prospects at a lower level, but they aren’t going to part with Duffy or Panik to get either or those two.
mmlotto0707
Gardner for Jason hammel

Wonder if the Cubs would make the Marlins an offer for Dee Gordon if he would move to CF?
JT19
He’s not going to move to CF. He’s established himself as a top 2B, a spot where if he hits well he will get paid very well. Moving to another position would only make sense for a player if he really wants to be on that team or knows he’s terrible defensively at his position (which I’m not sure of but I’m sure Gordon is at least passable there) and that there is someone better behind him. Basically Gordon would have no incentive to move to CF unless he signed a hefty extension prior to or as part of a deal. He stands a better chance at maximizing his earning potential at 2B rather than in the outfield.
batman
I was all for the Pirates moving Melancon but man he seems like a great guy. I hope he stays now unless someone seriously over pays
54scooterb
Melancon back to Houston would be interesting.
newera36
I’d really like to see what the Orioles could get for Britton. If they could get something similar to what the Padres got for Kimbrel from Houston I’d be all for it. Britton is much cheaper and Baltimore needs the prospects.
batman
At least they have Brault and Tarpley… Oh wait 🙂
newera36
Add in Zach Davies who got traded for Parra because Snider was such a bust and that makes it even worse.
gorav114
The Orioles seem stuck on what to do. If they are not going to do everything to keep winning then break it down. If they broke it down Britton would get a great return for sure.
dhud
I have been a strong advocate for the Reds receiving strong returns for their players, but the idea of “asking for more than they traded for Kimbrel” leaves me scratching my head…
54scooterb
I’d talk to Washington for a package including Drew Storen for Chapman, then Dusty has his old closer.
mookiessnarl
Hanley was certainly bad on the field, but tough to see how he was bad off the field. It’s not like he was arrested or involved in any scandals.
bruinsfan94 2
Yea I was thinking the same thing. Maybe he meant to say in the field and at the plate.
CSDollhopf
He’s talking about how he wasn’t a good teammate in the clubhouse
bambam
kubitza and cowart platooning at third and Jonny Giavotella at second scares me when simba and Trouts gold standard defense will ultimately have to carry the Angels not to mention Trout needs more protection at the plate and I’m all for Jason Hayward but most likely will lead off or bat second and resigning Freeze won’t protect Trout. Quite a quagmire with a depleted farm system even with a surplus of quality #3 at best SP’s that are young enough (maybe ace material with Richards while he’d take one step forward and two steps back last season compared to 2014 before the knee injury) to trade and fill in holes of need 3B,2B,LF, bullpen and a true ace or a solid #2 starter, it’s either a mix of signing top tier FA’s meaning paying the luxury for(LF&SP) and trade pitching i.e. Santiago/Heany/Skaggs for a slight up grade at 2B or 3B not to mention Cron/Pujols at 1B defensively which isn’t pretty at times. Trying to be optimistic but hey Trout deserves better period. Eppler has to be better then Reagins. Damn you Arte.
Gardner_012
Julio Teheran and Adonis Garcia for Matt Duffy Kelly Tomlinson and Kyle crick
twins33
If the Twins trade Plouffe for only relievers then it will be a JJ Hardy mistake again. Luckily a difference is that they have another 3B ready to take over.
Plouffe should be worth more than relievers.
formerlyz
As a Marlins fan, I sincerely hope they trade Gordon. I am still incredibly frustrated by the abhorrent trade they made to get him. They NEED to sell high. At least get back close to the amount we gave up. If they can do that, that is more than fine by me
User 4245925809
Noticed Bucky Walters name on the old timers list and reminded me of another story from long ago if anyone cares to read it:
During my way younger years, I knew the team Dr of the old Phillies teams from the mid 30’s, who had retired to Winter Haven, they had ST here back then he had said and he had loved the weather, so came here to retire when he got older and used to tell me stories of Bucky Walters, Dolph Camilli and especially, this one guy Ted Kleinhans who was traded early on that he was close with.
He (Doc Ebelmesser) and I went to the same church and he knew I liked baseball as a young man. 1st time I went to his house showed me all of his pictures of days with the various old players and this baseball… Team signed ball from the entire 1935 Phillies and he gave it to me.. A 13-14YO kid (me) was ecstatic. Still have the thing, put away so they don’t “vanish” as back then no sharpies for permanency, just regular ink.
Used to go see “Doc” as often as could and talk baseball, though he’s been gone now for over 40 years. A super human being.
jmi1950
It would be stupid to trade Hanley and have no DH in 2017-18. They should have outrighted both Hanley & Panda like they did with Craig. They would still have Rutledge and a spot for a prospect that they will now lose in the rule 5 draft. That would give them flexibility until April 1. If Hanley or Panda were not in shape to play opening day, they could be left in Florida to get in shape. That extra prospect and or Rutledge could be used as part of a trade package or depth; when not if DD puts together another “prospect package” and or spring injuries will open up roster spots. Even after Ortiz said he is retiring no one will admit that Hanley has always been his replacement. The only issue is where to play him when Papi is healthy and in the line up.
formerlyz
B/c Hanley and Pablo Sandoval would GLADLY accept the outright assignment…..
twinsdude
The Twins should deal Plouffe to acquire Javier Baez, then use Danny Santana or Eduardo Nunez to acquire a hard throwing reliever.
