Red Sox Release Carlos Marmol

By Mark Polishuk | March 28, 2016 at 9:15am CDT

The Red Sox have released veteran reliever Carlos Marmol, who was in camp on a minor league deal.  The Sox announced the release along with several other roster moves this morning (hat tip to Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald).

Marmol was looking to return to the big leagues for the first time since 2014, though his career-long control problems resurfaced in Boston’s spring camp.  Though Marmol only pitched four spring innings, he walked seven batters (to go with five strikeouts) while posting a 6.75 ERA.  At age 33, the question of whether Marmol has thrown his last Major League pitch has to be asked, though his track record and still-tantalizing ability to miss bats may get him another minors deal with another team.

The former Cubs closer has long been defined by his high strikeout and walk totals, posting an 11.6 K/9 and 6.2 BB/9 over his 577 career innings with the Cubs, Dodgers and Marlins from 2006-2014.  He spent most of the 2015 season pitching for the Indians’ Triple-A affiliate.

With this morning’s flurry of moves, Boston now has 27 players in its Major League camp as the Sox prepare to get down to 25 men for Opening Day.

With as much talent as my Sox’s bullpen has, there was no way he was going to get a spot.

With smith going to the DL there could have been an opening.

Think Barnes is ready for mid innings spot. Farrel just needs to learn to use his power reliever in 1 inning stints when they have proven time again 2 is bad, something Tito never did.

Oh goodness. Now there’s 2 of you for people to freak out about? I see the user name is barely different. This is ridiculous but entertaining nonetheless.

I have to admit it’s pretty funny, although I kinda think that it’s him with the duplicate account as well. This guy’s pretty good though, if that’s the case. I’ll give him credit for originality

At this point, I wouldn’t be upset if commenting was banned from this site altogether.

I feel like if they put a filter that automatically blocked comments including the phrase “my Sox” that would cull this stuff by like 70% easy.

By my count, the roster is at 26 now, accounting for the fact that Vazquez, Workman, Smith, and E-Rod are slated for the DL (per link in the article. And that odd man out is almost certainly going to be Roenis Elias that’s to his 10.45 spring ERA.

I saw Marmol pitch the other day and he looked lousy. He could barely find the plate and then looked flustered after some rookie shortstop booted an easy grounder. This was just a matter of time. His big league career is over.

The commenting system has been straight down hill since they changed it. I barely even use it any more.

Awww Man!!!!! This sucks!!!!!! I was actually looking forward to seeing Marmol walk the bases loaded, hit the next guy to allow a run and then strike-out the next 3!!!! Only my favorite team(Pre Theo) would hang onto to such a train wreck for more than one season! Hopefully Marmol catches on with some totally desperate ballclub in need of a bullpen arm so I can enjoy his folly. Then again, no team is that dumb……
