Cafardo’s Latest: Trout, Trumbo, Reyes, Chapman, Ruiz

By Connor Byrne | May 15, 2016 at 1:13pm CDT

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe is the latest to weigh in on the possibility of the Angels trading superstar center fielder Mike Trout, naming 10 teams capable of putting together packages for the 24-year-old. The Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Phillies, Nationals, Astros, Rangers, Mets, Giants and Cubs could all make a hypothetical Trout trade work, writes Cafardo.

Here’s more from the Boston-area insider:

  • The Orioles haven’t begun contract talks with free agent-to-be Mark Trumbo, but that may change if the 30-year-old outfielder continues his torrid pace. Trumbo, whom the Orioles acquired from Seattle for a pittance in the offseason, has hit a tremendous .314/.365/.606 with 11 home runs in 148 plate appearances this year and is putting himself in position to earn an appreciable raise over his 2016 salary of $9.15MM.
  • There’s seemingly interest around the league in shortstop Jose Reyes, whom the Rockies will make available when he’s reinstated from a domestic violence suspension at the end of the month. Reyes, 32, is still owed roughly $41MM – including a $4MM buyout in 2018 – and is coming off arguably the worst season of his career.
  • The Yankees could make closer Aroldis Chapman available in late June if they’re not in playoff contention by then, according to Cafardo. The lights-out left-hander is on an $11MM-plus salary and is slated to hit free agency at the end of the season.
  • Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz is reviving his stock, having hit .291/.371/.509 with three homers in 62 PAs, and could interest teams looking for a cheaper alternative to the Brewers’ Jonathan Lucroy – who will be the best backstop on the market if Milwaukee shops him. “He doesn’t have the arm he once had, so that aspect of his game won’t come back, but young pitchers love throwing to him,” a National League scout told Cafardo. The 37-year-old Ruiz’s contract includes a $4.5MM club option for 2017.

So Correa would be considered “untouchable” in a Trout trade, but Seager and Bryant could be potential options for LAA? I don’t think so. Those guys are every bit as “untouchable” as Correa is.

No one is truly “untouchable” in the world of sports, everyone is available for a price, Correa may be the next great shortstop in the MLB but you never know, as for trout he has proven he’s one of the best in the game, it’s all an uncertainty in all of this.

Put Cafardo’s articles together… Maybe they can trade Clay Buchholz for Mike Trout.

Ultimately I don’t see the Angels moving him. I think he’s just way too young and way too good. Maybe later in his contract, but not soon.

Trout won’t be traded imo, but if that day did ever come. I believe the dodgers or the cubs could be in play for him.

For someone of Trout’s caliber you’d want a high-end young and controllable major leaguer in addition to top minor league talent.

So basically if you traded Trout, you’d want someone like Trout in exchange.

          Well for example
Cubs trade Solar + Volgelbach + Mckinney or Almora + a pitching prospect

Dodgers trade Pederson + Urias + Holmes + Lee

          is that good enough lol

Thats wayyyyyy too light for both sides. Especially the Cubs.

That’d be fine for a superstar you know you’re going to let walk in FA in two years, but not basically the easy choice for best guy in the league, who’s 24 and signed for a gazillion years already. The question one has to ask… Are you going to get more value out of this prospect package, or out of the guy you’re trading? With as good as trout is, it’s easy to have five guys not add up.

Trading Mike Trout will be the most senseless and stupid trade that will ever be made in the history of baseball… It will top the Babe Ruth trade … You just don’t trade a superstar like Trout… You build around him…

Since Anaheim has no farm system (ranked dead last among all 30 teams, is right at the salary cap with no relief in sight and an owner in Moreno who seems unwilling to spend the penalties required for going owner the salary cap..

Just how do you propose the Angels build around Trout exactly? The pitching is in a shambles, without Richards going down to a tragic injury. A retread is playing left field, the SS is down for the count.. Please let us know?

TJ surgery is not tragic. A bus crash killing 10 is tragic. Let’s get a little perspective here. TJ surgery is unfortunate at worst.

Babe Ruth was not traded. He was sold. Also how can you say trading Trout would be the worse trade in the world without seeing what tjey trade would be?

I would think the Pirates would be able to set up a very attractive package for Trout of pitching prospects and position players that would restock the system. It would be an issue on the Pirates end just paying for Trout.

Congratulations Angels fans. You have officially replaced the Rockies and Tulo as the team that everyone else says need to trade their star for peanuts. You’ll love it when certain team’s fans nitpick every flaw, while trying to make a lowball offer for him at the same time. As much as i loved Tulo, I was relieved when the trade happened just so I wouldn’t have to read another rumor about it. You may not think so now, but trust me after several years of hearing about a Trout trade, you will feel the same way when/if he is finally traded.

The big difference is Tulo was an often injured players whose stats were suspect due to Coors . Plus, Trout is younger, healthier and at the top of his game. Tulo has not done well since leaving the Rocks. Trading Trout seems to be one of the topics that keeps coming up on this forum like trading Panda for Shields was before Sandoval’s injury. Oh well…they do fill up space.
