Cubs Outright Brian Matusz

By Steve Adams | August 8, 2016 at 9:06am CDT

Here are Monday’s minor moves from around the league…

  • Left-hander Brian Matusz cleared outright waivers and will remain with the Cubs organization after being designated for assignment on Aug. 1, tweets Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. Matusz will return to Triple-A Iowa, where he pitched well before being promoted to make a spot start on the eve of the non-waiver trade deadline. Matusz was tagged for six runs in just three innings in his lone big league start with the Cubs but has compiled a 3.58 ERA with a 39-to-7 K/BB ratio in 27 1/3 minor league innings this season — including a 1.93 mark in 9 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level. Formerly a mainstay in the Orioles’ bullpen, Matusz has yielded 14 earned runs in a total of nine Major League innings this season.

Don’t forget that Matusz was a pretty darn good LH reliever the past 3 seasons before 2016. He’s still young and could rebound to have a lot of life left in that left arm!

He’ll be 30 over the off-season, when he’ll be a free agent. He’s making $5M this year. He had been a serviceable LH out of the Orioles bullpen prior to this year, VS. lefties, but he’s never been able to get RH-hitters out. And I still don’t think he’s healthy from when he started the year on the DL when he got hurt during spring training. I’d like to agree that he could rebound…but signs this year point otherwise.

I find it surprising that he didn’t get claimed. Left handers develop later.

He’s 29 years old. How much more “developing” do you really expect?

That guy looked so terrible I don’t even know how he recorded 9 outs. His breaking balls were all high and rolling. He looked like a A ball pitcher. Was overmatched. IF he has any potential whatsoever, it would only be as a LOOGY or a 1 inning relief pitcher. So he can throw harder and only pitch to guys once. And that even a big stretch.

The Cubs pay Tommy La Stella to play baseball correct? So why allow him to not do what they pay him to do? It’s complete BS! He should be in Iowa getting his work in. Period.
