Jason, I’m not meaning to be contrary, I’m just seeking clarification of your opinion on the subject because your words in the chat left me puzzled and confused about player values when it seemed you suggested that it would seriously take more than Foltynewicz for the Braves to acquire McCann from the Yankees. I mean what am I missing?
To begin with Folty is young (presumably ascending), coming off a promising season and has basically 4 more years of team control and cheap while McCann is old for his position (and appears by almost all accounts to be declining) and is very expensive with two years left on his current contract (and a vesting option for a third year). Both players (unless I read it wrong) just came off seasons with 1.3 fWAR. I understand that young decent controllable pitchers as well as quality catchers are at a premium because of relative scarcity, but It looks that even if the Yankees ate a substantial amount of McCann’s contract (over half) that Foltynewicz would still be far more valuable just by himself than McCann. What am I missing that led you to state what you did?
That doesn’t even begin to push the boundaries of why such a trade of those two players wouldn’t be likely or logical to start with (since Coppy has stated repeatedly that the Braves are seeking major league starting pitching this offseason and not trading it away).
I can undoubtedly see why the Yankees would like Folty (almost any team could use his value) but I’m having issues understanding your thought process. I apologize if you feel that I’m trying to call you out, but I sincerely just want to understand your thought process on why you seemed to imply that not only was Folty for Bmac too light (and would require more pieces coming from the Braves) but seemed (to me at least) that you thought it was a plausible trade idea.
Perhaps I have just misunderstood those comments.
Thanks

I like folty as a stros fan i hated to see him go to atl, but he isn’t that good . He has a few issues that i do not see being solved by a move to the al east and rothschild. I see absolutley no reason the yankees would want him unless possibly as a trade chip in a multi team / player deal. Mcann is a good veteran to have on a young pitching staff but yankees wont pay too much to be rid of him so they just get the value they can out of him unless someone with a specific need comes a with an offer to good to pass up.

Thank you for your reply astros_should_be_fortyfives. But the thing was I wasn’t trying to go by whether I “liked” Folty or not. I’m thinking purely of him (and McCann) as just commodities. That was why I stated in terms of value:
1) both had the same value in 2016 according to fWAR
2) Folty is young, cheaper, with more years of control coming off his best season
3) McCann is old for his position with few years of control but at an extremely high cost and just came off one of his worst career seasons.
Normally if you were looking at players in those situations (the names not being indicated only their stats, contracts and age) then to think the older more expensive player could be had for the younger cheaper player with more years would be laughable. That was why I was specifically asking what was I missing? Basically what was the difference in this specific situation that I was missing compared to similar situations (again talking stats, contract and age).
And it won’t mean much (because they are moving to a new stadium next season) but of McCann’s 20 homeruns a total of 6 of them wouldn’t even had been homers in Turner field. So the question is how will he perform when moved out of a bandbox like Yankee Stadium?

The homerun figures and distances were via the ESPN Home Run Tracker (which has overlays for different parks and such). It is an extremely neat tool.
