Rangers Designate Brady Dragmire

By Jeff Todd | January 19, 2017 at 4:13pm CDT

The Rangers have designated righty Brady Dragmire for assignment, the team announced. His roster spot was needed for the team’s signing of Tyson Ross.

Dragmire, 23, has already been designated once by Texas this winter — and several other times by other organizations. Now, he’ll likely continue his tour of the majors via the waiver wire, unless the Rangers can sneak him through.

As we’ve noted on each of those prior occasions, Dragmire hasn’t yet sniffed the big leagues and worked to only a 4.38 ERA over his 72 Double-A frames in 2016. Despite pedestrian K/BB numbers (5.1 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9), he also carried a 63.6 percent groundball rate that has obviously intrigued quite a few teams.

Dragmire does not get rave reviews on a 40 man roster but he does get rave reviews in DFA limbo

Bucs have any open spots at the moment?? Anyone else less valuable on the 40 man? Dragmire, take 3 is just begging to happen!

Something really needs to be done about this. My idea is that once a player has been designated twice within the same month and placed on waivers, any claiming team will be unable to designate that player for at least 30 days. This would at least keep these types of players from being designated every time a team makes a new addition and would deter teams from claiming him unless they really wanted him rather than to just temporarily fill roster space. This happens a few times every year and it probably doesn’t feel good being one of these players.

I don’t think it’s that big of a deal during the offseason. It doesn’t require him to travel around playing on a bunch of different teams. If it was the regular season, it might be different.

I think the guy should get half the waiver claim fee. If he’s going to be tossed around, he ought to at least get paid for it.

At the rate that things are going with him, he’ll be back on my Jays’ 40-man roster.

    And then he’ll get DFA’d…

Yeah, wow. Being a pro athlete and playing a game you love every day for a living must really suck. Those poor players. I’ll gladly trade places with him and get DFA’ed every day by every team and he can have the stability of my Mon-Fri job. Think he’ll trade?

What is it about this guy that every team sort of likes enough to always get claimed and what is it they find out about him to always make them DFA him? (Legit question)

The gb rate honesty. Every competing bullpen wants one. Teams are honestly trying to play the game to see who is able to slip him through waivers. Teams probably want to see if he could be the gb specialist but not necessarily ready for a MLB bullpen. Usually ends with a rebuilding team shuffling around space to give a good look.

Hopefully he can rid himself of the injury bug and have a successful year. So much potential there for him but sadly the durability and injuries seem to get in the way.

I feel bad for Brady. During the next CBA if you designate a guy too much in the league he should get some kind of compensation like max $250,000 if he is designated 4 or more times during the season year.

Minor league players don’t really have a voice in the MLBPA. I think a small DFA bonus might be nice to offset the hassle but it will never make it to the bargaining table

And then I’ll hope they later get a better player to put on the 40 man and DFA him again.

I remember the catcher Eli whiteside one off season being designated far more than this. Happy that it’s off season and not during and it’s nice to be wanted versus sitting and waiting for a call to never come. Seems like a pitcher that the pirates should claim and hold on to this time.
