Mets Select Paul Sewald, Designate Ty Kelly

By Jeff Todd | April 7, 2017 at 10:33pm CDT

The Mets have announced a roster swap, selecting the contract of righty Paul Sewald. He’ll take the spot of infielder Ty Kelly, who was designated for assignment.

Sewald, 26, threw to a 3.29 ERA over 65 2/3 innings last year at Triple-A. He racked up a healthy 11.0 K/9 against 2.9 BB/9 in his first attempt at the highest level of the minors. Sewald was also rather impressive this spring, when he allowed just seven hits and four earned runs in 14 1/3 innings, with a 12:5 K/BB ratio.

As for Kelly, he’ll make way for another pen arm as the club attempts to keep its rotation fresh. The 28-year-old reached the majors for the first time last year, slashing .241/.352/.345 in his 71 plate appearances. He spent most of the year at the hitter-friendly confines of Triple-A Las Vegas, where he batted an excellent .328/.409/.435 with 38 walks and just 42 strikeouts over 316 trips to the plate.

Mets release Kelly a day after them braves signed ryan howard. I can read the tea leafs and i expect the mets to trade for freddie freeman any day.

Only if the Braves agree to pay most of Freeman’s contract.

Mets don’t need Freeman. Dominick Smith will be up midway to end of the season depending on how well he does at AAA

Why would Atlanta trade their center piece when they feel they’re just a season a way from contending?

The braves are one of the smartest organizations in baseball. They aren’t trading their star to a division rival when they just opened a new stadium and are only like a year away from contending.

Those are really solid numbers, especially considering he plays in Vegas.

he has hit at every level….needs to get the power numbers up but he will be the 1st basemen if not by the end of this year than next year.

I’m talking about Sewald’s pitching, not Smith’s numbers. Sorry!

As elite as Freeman is, any team would be ecstatic to have him on their their roster, there is zero chance that trade would happen. I literally can’t think of one reason the Braves would like to trade Freeman and the Mets certainly wouldn’t be interested in giving up the massive package it would take to acquire him especially considering they have one of the most highly praised 1B prospects in all of baseball.
