Steven Wright To Undergo Season-Ending Knee Surgery

By Jeff Todd | May 4, 2017 at 2:48pm CDT

The Red Sox have announced that righty Steven Wright will undergo season-ending left knee surgery. The precise surgery is a cartilage restoration procedure. Wright is expected to be ready for the 2018 campaign.

The 32-year-old Wright was a revelation for the Sox last season, breaking out with a 3.33 ERA, 7.3 K/9, 3.3 BB/9 and a 43.7 percent ground-ball rate in 156 2/3 innings. The knuckleballer began wearing a knee brace late in Spring Training, telling reporters at the time that he’d been dealing with on-and-off soreness but considered the brace precautionary. At the time, Wright said that he didn’t believe any singular issue had led to the knee pain. Clearly, however, that discomfort continued to mount, and it’ll now end up costing him roughly an entire year’s worth of innings.

[Related: Updated Boston Red Sox Depth Chart]

With Wright sidelined for the remainder of the season and David Price still yet to make his 2017 debut, Boston’s rotation will consist of Chris Sale, Rick Porcello, Drew Pomeranz, Eduardo Rodriguez and Kyle Kendrick for the time being. Southpaws Brian Johnson and Henry Owens remain on the 40-man roster as depth options in Triple-A, and fellow lefty Roenis Elias will give the Sox another optionable starter once he returns from an intercostal strain.

Wright, at some point, will be shifted to the 60-day disabled list to clear a 40-man roster spot for the Sox, and he’ll accrue an entire year of service time while on the shelf. That’ll push him beyond the three-year mark, thereby making him eligible for arbitration for the first time in his career next offseason. Boston can still control Wright through the 2020 season via the arbitration process.

Go away. You waste space and time with your hurt feelings, rampant self-justification, and monotonous soapbox rants.
Go to ESPN, MLB, Bleacher Report, or CBS sites or your fine NY daily rags and whine there. You’ll have plenty of company with countless others who insist on being “right”.
Or go to a party and clear the room in 15 seconds.

When half of your comment is predicated on a bs, why would anyone feel the need to address your entire point? You obviously don’t care about facts and just want to yap.

He has to do with the fact that literally every Tommy John pitcher involved in every trade made between the Padres and the Marlins or Red Sox last year is currently employed by the Padres yet those teams still feel entitled to cry about it.

Espinoza doesn’t need TJ yet, and the red sox didn’t know he needed it. The padres knew rea was injured and lied about it. That is why he was sent back. Also, at the time of the trade espinoza was healthy and pomeranz was injured

He’s a fast worker on the mound. not like some guy such as Bucholz, who would walk all over the mound between pitches, or throw to 1b multiple times per inning.

To speed up the game? More than anything would be to put some teethe into the between pitches the tactics stalling around both hitters and pitchers pull off.. cashing out that nonsense “music” some ppl think they must have and stepping out of the batter’s box at all is number 1. Then pitchers and the rosin bag.. One visit per half inning is more than enough.

Use Wade Miley’s between pitch timer as a guide and games go quick

3 of the biggest Boston offenders in recent memory bhave been Ortiz, Youkillis and pedroia. That walking around between and adjusting of every piece of equipment.. asking for time and being auto granted used to never happen.. Umpires are the ones who allowed the game to get longer for those reasons.

Pitcher wants to go? Throw the ball ready or not and have an umpire with the GUTS to call the pitch, whatever it was.. That nonchalant strutting around players do will quickly cease. Can’t say how many times have seen Miley at the ready and waiting for a hitter to finish off some garbage routine between pitches..

I bet they trade what’s left of the farm for Quintana. Sox are in win-now mode so no prospect is safe. Dombrowski will go all-in and offer Devers, Travis, and Groome along with a few minor pieces.

Time to deal from the one strength they have, catching depth. Not saying give someone away but there is value there and the Sox need a third baseman (many teams need pitching so a bidding war would likely prevent a valuable starter coming back).

Not getting a starter. They’re not mortgaging the farm as someone earlier suggested. They fully intend to stay under the threshold this year to reset the luxury taxes for 2018 free agents. Leon and Vasquez are two of the top Sox to eight arms and should bring back a third baseman if Devers is not ready. They blew it with Swihart but many teams would still love to have that bat. problem is they exposed his lack of power which lowers his corner outfield value.
