Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe looks at nine teams who are trending upward this season and nine teams who are on the downward swing in his latest notes column. These rankings (and Cafardo’s piece in general) contain several hot stove items as teams look to be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. The highlights…
- The Yankees are looking for a third baseman, according to league sources. Chase Headley got off to a hot start but scuffled badly in May, posting just a .446 OPS in 90 plate appearances last month. Top prospect Gleyber Torres has been getting some reps at third base in the minors amidst rumors that he could be promoted later this season, though New York could prefer a more proven veteran for the hot corner if the team is chasing a pennant. Headley is still owed $21.6MM through the end of the 2018 season, though the Yankees have shown a willingness to reduce the playing time of other highly-paid veterans in the past if they aren’t producing.
- “Most talent evaluators” believe the Dodgers will make a play for the top starter available at the deadline. The Dodgers’ rotation has combined for 6.2 fWAR (second in baseball) and a 3.94 ERA (third in baseball), though given the number of injury concerns within their staff, it wouldn’t be a shock if L.A. pursued yet another notable arm.
- Cafardo also suggests that the Cubs will look to acquire a top starter, even if they’re one of the teams on the “trending down” list. Cafardo believes the retirement of clubhouse leader David Ross has had a bigger impact on the Cubs than the team is willing to admit.
- Some teams that were in on Jose Quintana have cooled their interest thanks to the southpaw’s rough start to the season. There has been some questions about whether Quintana is healthy, though the White Sox say he is healthy. Quintana has a 5.60 ERA in 64 1/3 innings, with career highs in BB/9 (3.36) and homer rate (13%) combining with a career-low 37.8% ground ball rate. On the plus side, he also has a career-best 8.96 K/9 and ERA indicators are all over a run lower than his 5.60 real-world ERA.
- “Don’t look for major subtractions” from the Giants, even if the team doesn’t make any additions at the deadline. Cafardo doesn’t expect the Giants to deal the likes of Johnny Cueto or Jeff Samardzija. I would imagine San Francisco is hoping to make a quick return to contention next season, though if Cueto gives them an indication that he’ll opt out of his contract this winter, a trade could be explored.
- The Rangers are also a team that won’t go into full-scale selling mode, so Cafardo expects them to wait and see if they should pursue starting pitching help for a run at a wild card slot.
- Zack Cozart has often been mentioned in trade rumors over the last couple of years as the Reds have been rebuilding, though one AL GM wonders why Cincinnati hasn’t instead explored an extension with the veteran shortstop. The Reds’ long-term plan is to have Jose Peraza at short and Dilson Herrera at second, so on paper, Cozart makes more sense as a trade chip than a building block. While Cozart is mashing the ball and playing his usual excellent defense, he also turns 32 in August and may be declining by the time the Reds are again ready to contend.

why not give tyler wade a shot at 3rd? Can’t hurt them givin that headly is ass now
dhd36
He not an ass, he just not good lol
liamsfg
Not “an ass” just “ass” as he so eloquently put it. Just another way to say he’s not doing well.
thegreatcerealfamine
They’re winning and Wade is being groomed to be a Zobrist type! Plenty of time to let Gleyber transition to third at triple A.
slider32
I don’t see any position players other than Bird and Austin coming up until Sept. Yanks could make a move on Moose or Hosmer at the deadline.

David Ross was clearly an asset to the Cubs but we are talking about a player who was in a total of 883 games in 15 years for seven different teams. He was, of course, with the Red Sox (94 games) and earned his Cafardo Wings there. But to suggest that the overall underperformance of the Cubs is attributable to his absence is a stretch. There was a good Fangraphs piece on this earlier this week.
Philliesfan4life
forgetting losing fowler hurt them as well
benny 5
u have to remember the calming and his personality Ross that is the pitchers our not same right now also dexter at leadoff was a huge loss plus his locker room presence
seamaholic 2
Funny how the folksy old white guy who’s now on “Dancing with the Stars” but barely played last year is suddenly the key to their success, while the African American every day leadoff hitter who actually drove their offense is forgotten. Such is life.

Not everything is about race seamaholic
WAH1447
Better to have a white lead off guy anyways if we are gonna bring race into this

Take your race bait BS out of here, goofball.
bravesfan88
People can find racism in anything these days…It’s absurd honestly…
Is Dexter Fowler overlooked YES!!
But give credit where it is due, having Rossy in the clubhouse and around the pitchers, catchers, and youngsters is a HUGE addition to any clubhouse..
Obviously the media loves them some David Ross, but then again who doesn’t?? The man is an extremely hard worker, he is beyond humble, and he is very appreciative of every at-bat, and every game he ever played.
He just loves baseball, and having that happy-go-lucky, funny clubhouse glue is paramount for a winning team. Obviously, the Cubs are lacking that this year.
Is Rossy, the ONLY reason they aren’t performing to expectations?? Of course not…Look at the performance they have gotten at the #1 spot in their line-up, and that will tell you a big part of their problems…Which has to be attributed to Dexter Fowler leaving…
Does Fowler impact the Cubs from a pitchers perspective though…Not really..That I actually put alot of stock into Rossy being gone..
David Ross, will one day make a FIRST CLASS manager, and personally I HOPE AND PRAY it is for one of his former teams….The Braves….

What!….I don’t believe in racism! But people who use it as an excuse for everything in there life, yeah I believe in that! Grow up buddy, you sound stupid & uneducated!

Talking about education, it’s “their” life in this situation. Not “there” life.

no. you can’t just say everything you don’t agree with is racist.
mannyl101
Agree! A true lead-off hitter is extremely valuable & rare in today’s game! Can’t blame the cubs, as the have a wealth of OF prospects! But, it bit them in the butt!
bsteady7
They miss Dexter Fowler more than they may say. And I think wood as well
nysoxsam
Sometimes a players worth +/- can’t simply be measured on the field. David Ross’s value apparently increased in the clubhouse, on the bench and in the bullpen.
mnsports
trading Jorge soler hurt them as well
Fabian721
The cubs with russ & fowler lost MORE than baseball players they lost leadership, excitement, energy & all around tuff guys, ( they inspired there team mates) thats what is missing.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
If the Cubs or Dodgers trade for a rental starter he won’t take an extension. Period.
It’s tough to say what Cueto’s value is because of the opt out. 4 years and two months of Cueto (and his hefty salary) are a completely different asset than just two months of Cueto, an acquiring team won’t know which one they are getting until after the trade and Cueto won’t waive his opt-out to facilitate the trade. There would have to be some stipulation that says something to the effect of “If and only if Cueto opts out, the Giants will pay the acquiring team x amount of money and also receive a player to be named later.”
Reds haven’t traded Cozart because there’s no market for rental shortstops at this point.
STLCards33
Any team that trades for cueto does so under the assumption that he’s a rental. IMO
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
That’s the thing. They can’t make that assumption because it’s ultimately not up to them.
kbarr888
Plan for the worst…….Hope for the best………..right?
You are correct Ryan…..it’s not up to the team. But a team SHOULD approach a deal as if he’s a rental….which lowers his price/value (and therefore, their cost to acquire him).
If a team did the opposite………it could be disastrous.

I think LA and Chicago are going to make a run for Gray. Oakland is willing to listen to offers and both Chicago and LA are willing to offer. Maybe an outfielder for starting pitching. Perhaps a run for a TB starter could be a possibility. Honestly I love that LA has a surplus of starters. It makes it competitive which is working for us. They’re milking everyone to their full potential. I think a trade for Gray or another starter would ruin that.
User 4245925809
Why would Duquette want to go to chicago unless he had full authority? Williams as president would be as bad as is Angelos as Owner to deal with. neither have a clue.
thegreatcerealfamine
Dude the Sox won a WS under Williams!
User 4245925809
Been in serious contention since also have they not… Or is it serious contention for the cellar every season?
dodgerfan711
I want the dodgers to get archer. Calhoun, sheffield, oaks, rios, stewart are the prospects i see them willing to trade. Not all 5 but some combination.
Shane Newbanks 2
The Rays would never accept that kind of deal. Calhoun is the only prospect ranked in the top 100 and he is like 75th or something like that.
It would me more like 3 of 4 between Alvarez, Verdugo, Calhoun, Buehler, and Diaz.
dodgerfan711
Buehler is untouchable but i can definitely see the dodgers willing to give up more. Rios has done nothing but rake. I dont understand how he isnt even close to a top 100 prospect in the rankings. Yet if you talk down on guys like jp crawford who stink you get ridiculed. i dont think top 100 prospect means everything.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
What it comes down to is the Dodgers would have to absolutely be willing to part with two of their three untouchable pitchers. Rios isn’t a top 100 prospect because he’s ok. Eventually he might sneak in on the bottom of the list. The question becomes whether he has the bat speed to play at the highest level. He doesn’t really walk at all and he’s defensively limited. I like Rios, but this is a case of a fan overrating their prospects and minor league numbers being a little misleading.
Last note understand the asking price for Archer when the Astros asked was outrageous. They were asking for way more than Martes, Paulino, Tucker. With the graduations of the top hitting prospects I don’t believe the Dodgers have enough offensive firepower for the rays to consider it. Verdugo is a nice prospect but if he doesn’t have the range for CF well he’s absolutely lacking power. Rios well he’s a Dickson type of player. Calhoun would be the offensive middle of the order bat, but the potential he may need to DH might hamper his value significantly. You also have to look their system and potential rays needs and 1b is not one, neither 2b.
They aren’t going to go big. It’ll be an expiring contract, but with Buehler and White I’m ok with it. I hate to say it, but the leader in the clubhouse if the Rays do sell would be Astros and Cubs. The Cubs by far have the overabundance of offensive prospects that profile to the potential needs of the Rays.
therealbdavis
But TB does need a 2b. All potential 2b they have, only one is barely batting over .200. Plus they need relief and two starters for the time being. The year isn’t over for them but they definitely need some potential players. They also need Ramos to come back.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
TB has a dearth of MIF players and prospects either coming back from injury or patiently waiting at AAA. Beckham is going to continue to get run,Duffy is on his way back, Adames is the prized possession from that Price trade, Miller is going to need a place to play, no reason to give up on Robertson.
So if we are looking at this objectively do the Dodgers have a top mif, or in this case SS, that can prove to stay up the middle that is a premier talent with abilities more than what the Rays have? No not really. Do the Rays view Calhoun as an even passable 2b? The Dodgers offensive premier talents have all graduated. Now you’re getting into the question marks that don’t headline a deal for Archer. With that established you’d have to beat a studded Astros package. That package starts with Alvarez and White or Buehler. Which you match up pretty well with the Astros but then the third piece Tucker well Tucker has the power to play in RF. He also hasn’t come with the same physical/mental maturity questions attached to Verdugo. Verdugo can very well grow into a nice player but he’s still a tweener. Not going to push Kiermier to a corner and you sincerely question his power. Yet still that package was not enough to entice TB to bite.
frankiegxiii
That’s funny, 3 of those 4, made me lol, just a little though
jayceincase
Depends what list you are referring to because Verdugo and Buehler both are more highly regarding than Calhoun. Calhoun is also an enigma that absolutely needs traded with only American League teams likely interested. He is projects as a horrible defender with a Dan Uggla type track. His destined position is DH. I would stay away at all costs if I was trading partner.
johansantana17
Calhoun sounds like an Oakland type of player.
Priggs89
You wouldn’t even get Archer with all 5 of them…
drivingmickdavies
I am not so sure about Archer. I just find him a bit underwhelming. But maybe with our offense backing him he would be more solid.
Not sure what it would take to get this trade done.
I would kinda like Ervin Santana instead.
Priggs89
Santana likely wouldn’t be worth the price you’d have to pay to get him. He has significantly out-pitched his peripherals and is due for some major regression. Archer would be a much better choice IMO.
southi
I’m not saying it would be the ideal situation by any means but I’m wondering if Cozart could slide over to third if an acquiring team has a quality SS already entrenched.
davidcoonce74
You’d be losing a lot of value though because Cozart’s chief asset is the glove.
southi
Oh I agree that Cozart is extremely valuable as a defensive WAS but if the acquiring team already has an above average SS (but one the team doesn’t want to move to third temporarily) and Cozart is better than their thirdbaseman then he still makes the team better. Would it be the best fit? Probably not. Could it work under the right circumstances? I don’t see why not.
yankees500
Good thing we have genious Cafardo over here telling us what teams are not going to sell 2 months from the deadline.
JoeyPankake
Giants need to trade Cueto, Nunez, and anyone else who has any trade value who isn’t named Posey, Bumgarner, Crawford, Belt, Arroyo, or Panik. Not sure they anyone else has any value though.
brandonmarin
I can see a mike moustakas to Yankees deal working out.
slider32
There could be a fight for Moose, Red Sox, Yanks, and Mets going after him. You say, what the Mets, and I say yes they are in the worst division in baseball and play the Phillies, Braves, and Marlins 18 times. They are still in it with that schedule. I like the Yanks getting Hosmer or Frazier at the deadline.and maybe a lefty relief pitcher like Watson.
chesteraarthur
Hosmer isn’t good…
bsteady7
Theo is going to get a controllable starter. His lone rental came in the form of Chapman and he only did that because chi hadn’t won a WS in 108 years.
Priggs89
Wade Davis says hello…
Djones246890
Cubs need to find a way to get Ross back in the dugout. I know he’s on the payroll as a special assistant to operations, but if I’m Theo, I create a uniformed coaching spot for him. Hell, I don’t care if they call it “Spiritual Advisor.” He needs to get back in that dugout.
ibleeddodgerblue
A SP is the last thing the dodgers need!!!
Philliesfan4life
As an angels fan, I don’t see anyone stopping the astros, they look like the team to beat in the A.L, all they need is another pitcher and I think they are set.
GarryHarris
The Cubs replaced a veteran Catcher with two young Catchers. That will effect the pitching staff some but, not greatly and Clubhouse Effect is a media invention (unless its to the extent Sammy Sosa and Carlos Zambrano took it).
IMO, the 2017 Cubs SP staff is affected by the loss of a quality 5th stater and the offense is affected by a poor choice of leadoff hitters. The 2017 season is not even close to being over.
slider32
I also think David Ross was huge in the clubhouse almost a coach on the field, in the world series Rizzo was looking to him for leadership. Matt Holliday has done that for the Yanks this year, he was a quarterback in high school and is a coaches son. I think the Cards miss him, while the Yanks think he was a gift from heaven.
GarryHarris
The Cubs took a veteran Catcher from the mix. That will effect the pitching staff some but, not greatly and not for an entire season. Clubhouse Effect doesn’t effect the team performance unless its to the extent Sammy Sosa and Carlos Zambrano took it.

I read that players actually play under average in walk years, which is the opposite of what you would think. This looks to be true this year with players like Cueto, Quintana, Frazier, and others not doing that well.
aff10
Neither Cueto or Quintana is even really in a walk year. Cueto could just opt-in, and Quintana’s controlled through 2020 I think
GarryHarris
Doesn’t it appear that the Yankees have more problems at 1B than at 3B? Chris Carter/reg Bird/Rob Refsnyder seem much worse that Chase Headley. Although its not saying much, he is performing better than half of the 3B in the league.
thesaint959
“though the Yankees have shown a willingness to reduce the playing time of other highly-paid veterans in the past if they aren’t producing.” What a load of $hit. They had Texiera hopping around on one leg rather then just eat his contract. They won’t even eat small contracts like the one they gave Chris Capuano. Cashman thought he was being clever by DFA’ing the guy a dozen times that year, hoping he would get pissed and walk away—but he didn’t. The only one I have seen them eat was the last year and a half of A-Roid’s contract and that’s because that was Hank’s call (to re-sign him.) So Cashman did not have to take the blame. If they cared more about winning then money, they would trade CC to a national league team at the deadline (they would have to eat the rest of the money they owe him for this year) and try and get something for him—but they won’t. They should also move Gardner, because Judge is the future. Maybe Hicks too. Ellsbury can’t be moved with that contract but they need to open an OF spot for some of these kids that are almost ready.
Macho King OG
CC is out pitching Tanaka right now, so we should keep him, Plus he’s gone after this year anyway. I would try and trade Gardner while he’s playing well and bring up Fowler. I don’t think we’ll see Torres and Frazier until September. But we may get a Chance to see Adams soon.
CriminalMethod
Clever playing on words. It didn’t go unnoticed. Adams has to get promoted soon unless their planning on dealing him for a vet.
Drewnasty
LOL are we seriously blaming the Cubs WS hangover on their backup catcher? Jesus.
Djones246890
Clearly you don’t understand psychology or player dynamics.
It has nothing to do with how often he played, or the position he played.
He was a mentor that the team looked up to. Not sure why this is a hard concept to understand.
Then again, society is getting dumber by the second, so basic concepts are probably hard to grasp for most.
