The latest on some rotation names around baseball…
- Sonny Gray’s name has been frequently mentioned in trade speculation, though it appears teams have yet to engage in serious talks with the Athletics, Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com reports (Twitter link). Oakland executive VP of baseball operations Billy Beane hasn’t received any calls about Gray in recent days, and Gammons describes the calls that have come in as ” ’keep me in mind’ requests” rather than substantial inquiries. Gray is enjoying a solid bounce-back season from his rough 2016 performance, and his trade value would seemingly be on the rise after excellent outings in each of his last two starts.
- The Mets still have interest in a reunion with Bartolo Colon but the team will wait until the veteran’s DFA period is up before making a decision, Mike Puma of the New York Post writes. The Braves designated Colon for assignment on June 29, and with Colon still owed roughly $6MM for the rest of the season, the Mets and any other interested clubs are sure to wait until Colon clears waivers so Atlanta will be on the hook for that remaining salary (minus the prorated MLB minimum). The Mets would still have to make 40-man roster space for Colon but the team is confident that Colon would accept an offer to return to New York. The 44-year-old still owns a home in New Jersey and he was both a fan and clubhouse favorite during his previous stint with the Mets.
- Last summer’s trade of Wade Miley for Ariel Miranda last summer hasn’t worked out for the Orioles, Dan Connolly of BaltimoreBaseball.com writes, though Connolly notes that the deal is a microcosm of larger problems for the O’s. Since the Orioles have been unable to both develop their own starting pitching and build up a good stockpile of minor league talent, the team has been forced to settle for middle-of-the-road acquisitions like Miley rather than a starter that could provide a clear rotation upgrade. Connolly writes that the Orioles will likely pursue a similar move at this trade deadline if they choose to address their still-struggling pitching staff. It also doesn’t help that Miranda has pitched well for the Mariners this year and is far cheaper than Miley with more years of control, though Connolly notes that Miranda was seen as “a fringe big leaguer” by many, and Miranda’s performance is perhaps boosted by Safeco Field (as per his stark home/away splits).

Maybe the O’s would have actual talent to trade if they signed prospects…
Jeff McMillan
You probably mean ‘International’ prospects.
Jeff McMillan
Orioles have no clue when it comes to pitching prospects. Unbelievable that they can not develop even a mediocre starter. Matusz and Britton were 2 highly rated prospects and they got no where as starters, Gausman is heading down the same track. The guys we traded away would easily be #3’s on this team, Miranda, Davies…not even going to talk about Arrieta because it is clear he continues to be an enigma.
rbisingle
The A’s have the same problem with hitters. Maybe they should swap five hitting prospects for five pitching prospects and see what happens.
arc89
That was their problem a few years ago. This year they have Chapman, Barreto, Pinder, Olson, Maxwell, and Brugman as hitting prospects coming up to the majors. They also have 1 of the youngest pitching staffs with Manaea, Gosset, Cotton and Robertson. What they lack is OF help.
TheGreatTwigog
Donaldson, Healy. I see what you’re saying but it’s not as bad as the Os
gomerhodge71
Oriole pitching prospects have long been over-estimated. Gausman was supposed to be the next Jim Palmer. Dylan Bundy was supposed to be the next Roger Clemens. Not to mention Matusz,Rocky Coppinger, Ben McDonald, etc. They could have gotten a slew of players for Bundy or Hunter Harvey, both got hurt and the O’s were stuck with them.
dimitriinla
The O’s are hardly “stuck” with Bundy. A lot to love in his stuff but it takes time.
Ironman_4life
Harvey is still 1-2 years away from his debut. How are they stuck with him?
Trevor 3
This is only Gausman’s second year. I wouldn’t throw in the towel yet.
mstrchef13
You’re a fool. If the O’s had passed on Gausman or Bundy in the draft, everyone would have roasted them for being stupid. Pitching prospects often don’t work out. Also, no one gives up a “slew” of players for A-ball pitching prospects no matter how good they are.

Teams are kicking the tires on Sonny Gray, Bartolo Colon in a Mets uniform… We did this last year, right?
mikeyank55
Sonny is only a Mets fan’s dream. Bartolo is your reality. He’s a great guy who time has passed by.
It’s a fine deal once he becomes FREE for the CHEAP Wilpons.
I just hope that “TC” doesn’t push Bartolo into a serious injury.
thegreatcerealfamine
The training staff can pump him full of roids..he certainly has shown no signs of a conscience!
frankthetank1985
I normally don’t respond to u but just for fun, what injury did terry cause again? I forgot these aren’t athletes and shouldn’t be pushed to their full ability and worth being that their job is to go out there and perform any time they are called to do so.
frankthetank1985
You can get on him for managerial in game moves if you want, but I just don’t see why terry is blamed by u for baseballs all around epidemic of injuries.
mikeyank55
Start with allowing Johan Santana to throw more than 135 pitches, coming off of a long rehab stint, in pursuit of his no hitter. Mr. Cheerleader should have pulled him to protect him. HE WAS NEVER THE SAME.
To compare why don’t you spend a few
minutes researching a Marlins game earlier this season when a real manager pulled his pitcher. Read what Donnie Baseball wrote.
And the Mets don’t just have bad luck and are within the norm of pitching injuries. Look at the performance of their “dream team” starting staff of 2015 and where they are today. Start accepting that there is a cause for the total picture of injuries and a staff who will NEVER achieve its promise.
Look at his clubhouse leadership with Thor who would not go for an MRI. Would Joe Maddon, Joe Girardi or any other respected manager let him get away with that?
The guy is powerless with his star players. Would you care to research the article linked here where he depended on Jose Reyes and Cabrera to have influence over Cespedes.
frankthetank1985
You are hysterical haha. You really make me laugh sometimes.
mlbtrrtblm
He didn’t say Mets fans are yearning for Sonny Gray. He’s making a deja vu comment.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
I guess “teams” IS an anagram for “Mets A…”
pplama
Surprised there haven’t been more discussions on Gray.
Philliesfan4life
He would fit the cubs right now
arc89
Its more of what the A’s need. The team needs a CF and OF prospects.. They have nobody in their system for next year. Beane can wait until he gets a great offer because Gray still has 2 years left of arbitration. Why trade him for positions they don’t need.
A'sfaninUK
Would the Cubs give up Jimenez and Almora for him? Probably not so no, no fit there
nolanryan77
I see you aiming high here but you wouldn’t get Jimenez and almost. Maybe Jimenez plus a good pitching prospect and two 10-15 guys
showman
“Colon owns a home in New Jersey”
He’s got children all over town!
Polish Hammer
He misses the home cookin’
MrMet62
He earned thatvnickname “Big Sexy” dammit!
Armaday
Gray is being shopped early, to avoid a possible injury over the next month, killing his value. Contenders should be all over him.
nolanryan77
I wouldn’t say that should kill his value. I think teams should want to have an extra 4 Sonny Gray starts in July but a lot of teams are in limbo right now. The astros seem to be in dire need of arms after the suspension and there run in with the dl but they are still winning. The dodgers had one of the best months in all of baseball. The cubs are willing to wait because they want to add but seem like they want to get the best deal possible whether it be for gray, verlander etc. Once a team makes there mind up the gray offers should be rolling in. All it takes is one team to press the issue.
arc89
Right now unless a team offers a deal that can’t be turned down there will not be a trade. Closer to the deadline offers will go up. Some teams are on the edge waiting to see if they still contend around the deadline.
nolanryan77
What would you say is a can’t be turned down trade from teams like the astros dodgers and cubs? Just curious.
Kraycik
The Orioles would be much better if they knew how to evaluate talent, cultivate players and of course had a different owner.
