Dodgers Claim Dylan Floro

By Jeff Todd | August 4, 2017 at 4:47pm CDT

The Dodgers have claimed righty Dylan Floro off waivers from the Cubs, the Los Angeles organization has announced. A 40-man spot was opened by moving Franklin Gutierrez to the 60-day DL.

Floro, 26, was knocked around in 9 2/3 innings (over three relief appearances) earlier this year with the Cubs. And he has managed just 4.8 K/9 in his 48 2/3 Triple-A frames on the season.

Still, teams obviously remain interested in Floro’s ability to draw grounders. He has induced worm burners on 61.6% of the balls put in play against him this year at Iowa, where he owns a 3.88 ERA.

All teams do this all the time: Claim a guy and then when you want the roster spot back, DFA him. If he makes it through waivers, then he’s AAAA depth. If not, easy come, easy go.

These kinds of moves also tend to happen after you thin out the minors after dealing away prospects in trades. SOMEONE has to pick up those innings in the minors.

They traded 1 pitcher at the deadline.

And no pitchers above A ball. Acquired 3 major league pitchers and sent 3 pitchers to AAA. Dodgers just bringing in bodies for depth. This guy will get DFA’d to open up a 40 man spot for Buehler or AGON or Ethier or Verdugo or….

Vin Scully often used the expression “he’s killing a lot of worms” to describe a pitcher who was getting a lot of grounders. I wouldn’t be surprised if he got it from Red Barber.

Will be DFA’d like Ferrell and Ysla to make room for AGON, Ethier, Buehler, Verdugo, etc in September. Dodgers just want two weeks with their staff to see if there is anything there

Nice! So he will be in the Dodgers organization, never called up and inwardly cheering for the Cubs to win the World Series so he can get a ring. I love these scenarios.

Why would he cheer for a team that lost him on waivers

If I could get a World Series ring even after getting cut Id would cheer for the Nationals (and that’s saying something because I hate the Nationals).

Jesus, someone on here commented a few days ago and it is true. The Dodgers claim everyone. A guy gets DFA’d and you just wait a few days for the inevitable news at this point. “Dodgers claim …” Not like any of them matter, it’s just kinda funny at this point.

Well they kind of are running low on available bodies until the 60 day dl guys start matriculating in and sept rolls around. They probably also don’t want to waste options on some guys so its kind of claim and keep since they’re required to carry 40 with guys on the 60.

I like how Friedman has always utilized the waiver wire. Dont get why more teams don’t. Pay $20k to take a shot on something.
Im not saying claim guys under contract or guys who will be a free agent at years end but hey, Scooter Gennet, Brad Hand, Kirby Yates, Blake Parker, Patrick Kivelahan, Hernan Perez all waiver claims ir DFA trades.
For the Dodgers most of those claims haven’t returned much but hey, it can be effective.
    Last calendar year:
    Brett Eibner- 60-Day DL
Peter O’Brien- In AA under control through 2018
Jason Wheeler- Traded for bonus money
Joe Gunkel- Paid the fee and then remade the fee
Justin Marks- I believe he was just released.
Mike Freeman- on the wire right now so they could recoup the $20k

Overall they paid about $160k and Joey Tarsovich for Int’l Slot Money, Eibner, O’Brien, Luke Farrell, Luis Ysla abd Dylan Floro.

I’d take the Dodgers end all day. I doubt Freeman is claimed though.
