Giants Place Brandon Belt On Concussion DL, Promote Pablo Sandoval

By charliewilmoth | August 5, 2017 at 12:40pm CDT

The Giants have announced that they’ve placed first baseman Brandon Belt on the 7-day concussion DL. Taking his place on the roster will be a familiar face — that of Pablo Sandoval, who the team recently signed to a minor-league deal.

[Related: Updated San Francisco Giants Depth Chart]

Belt was struck in the head by an Anthony Banda curveball yesterday. Belt has an extensive concussion history that includes three DL stints in 2014, so it’s likely any potential head trauma would be worrisome to the Giants. He’s batting .241/.355/.469 with 18 homers this season.

Sandoval returns to play for the Giants for the first time since 2014, after which he left to begin what turned out to be a disastrous tenure with the Red Sox. Since his return to the Giants organization last month, he’s batted just 8-for-38 in two minor-league stops. Still, the last-place Giants arguably have little to lose in promoting him, and at least something to gain, since his current contract gives them options for 2018 and 2019 (when he’ll still be paid by the Red Sox) at the league minimum as long as he’s on the Giants’ roster.

Not three concussions in 2014. This sucks as Belt was our leading player in several categories. Yet another blow for the Giants.

Hope Pablo can pick things up! Too many expectations and a lot of pressure there.

It only shows as a double post for you, not us I’m pretty sure. Because it does the same thing sometimes for me and usually the second post disappears soon anyway

Hey Angie… he’s not a Boston fan–he is an ANGRY Boston fan. The dopes signed Panda to a stupid contract and then did not take out an insurance policy by having someone mentor his nutrition and exercise EVEN THOUGH his history was clear.

Good luck Panda. Hit the crap out of the baseball. Field like the old days and prove that the Sox were stupid all the way around.

Only reason the giants are doing this is because they have a surplus of old panda hats to get rid of. . Once they sell all those old panda hats they get rid of him.

there’s probably more former A’s players’ jerseys for sale than there are panda hats

Not long ago they tried selling hats for Belt which didn’t go over very well. I do like how the A’s have a promo to trade in your old giants cap for a new A’s cap. That’s marketing.

John Miller is still calling games for the Giants right? Hearing him say Pablo’s name along with any other Hispanic name is worth the price of admission right there. I remember as a kid when him and Joe Morgan used to call the Sunday night ESPN games before every team had their own broadcast.

You would wait for your team to get the nationally televised game and it used to be great how he would pronounce the names. Rafael Furcal is still the best of all time, he over-exaggerates ever letter and honestly sounds like a Spanish speaker it’s kinda cool, now batting: RRRAHHFIEAL FOORCALL.

Really? After watching miller call Giants games for 20 years (or however long it’s been) I can’t stand listening to his pseudo-Spanish, not to mention how he jinxes plays all the time, “well, we’d hate to see the Giants hit into a double play here…” right before they hit into a dp. Happens all the time. How someone so versed in baseball culture still does this just kills me.
And the way he pronounces Spanish names is absolutely tiresome. I can’t stand the way he says “pair-ez” (Perez). And when he and his milktoast protege Dave Fleming are together I refuse to watch…their back and forth is boring and downright stupid compared to Kruk and Kuip’s insights and anecdotes.
      And that nasal voice!
Im glad the rest of the country seems to like miller so much, but my family, friends and I are all Giants fans that could live without him. Love Joe Morgan though!

I’m not sure which Perez you are referring to but Salvador Peréz actually pronounces his name like “pair-es” and most Spanish speaking nations don’t pronounce it like “per-ez” like most Americans do.

If jinxes really worked, I think Miller could get the Giants in the WS every year instead of every other year.
