Mariners Place Felix Hernandez On 10-Day DL

By charliewilmoth | August 5, 2017 at 12:26pm CDT

The Mariners have announced that they’ve placed righty Felix Hernandez on the 10-day DL with right biceps tendinitis. To take his place on the active roster (and to start for him today against Kansas City), they’ve recalled righty Marco Gonzales from Triple-A Tacoma.

Hernandez has struggled in his last two starts, giving up a total of eight runs over 11 innings against Boston and Texas, and he’s in the midst of an uncharacteristically uninspiring season, with a 4.28 ERA, 8.4 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 over 73 2/3 innings. He also missed time earlier this season to a right shoulder inflammation. Nonetheless, the timing of his current injury comes as somewhat of a surprise. It’s unclear, at this point, how much time we’ll need to miss, but a second bout of arm trouble is never welcome news to player or team. As Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweets, Hernandez’s injury could increase the likelihood of the Mariners acquiring a starter via a waiver trade.

The Mariners last month acquired Gonzales from the Cardinals for Tyler O’Neill. He briefly appeared in the big leagues with St. Louis earlier this season but has not yet pitched in a game with the Mariners, although GM Jerry Dipoto said last week that he was impressed with Gonzales and expected him to appear in the big leagues later in the season. He has a 3.02 ERA, 7.6 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 over 86 1/3 minor-league innings this year after missing all of 2016 after having Tommy John surgery.

Why in the world would V not block a trade to the Mariners?

Chance at playoffs. Most cities are better than Detroit. Seattle is a nice city. So upgrade in place to live and upgrade in a better team to play for. Common sense

lol there is no chance he would accept a trade to Seattle. you’re forgetting he’d have to be there next season as well. it won’t happen

King Feliz is the anchor of M’s rotation… He will be missed…

I don’t think Felix is the anchor anymore. Paxton is the guy now. Felix is no more than a #3 at this point in his career, it’s sad they never put a good team on the field when he was the King

If Felix is the opening day starter next year we have a serious problem. Verlander is a money suck.

Nope, definitely a righty. The picture even shows him throwing with his right arm…….

Then the dodgers fan should have specified because the post is about felix more than Marco

I wonder if tommy john surgery is in the cards, seems like another pitcher had the same issue and had to get TJS

Felix has a lot of mileage on that arm. Hasn’t been king Felix for a few years

It depends on where the biceps tendinitis is located….could be shoulder which has nothing to do with TJS

Whether his stats show it or not, he is the heartbeat of our pitching staff. I sure hope Gonzales can throw decent right off the bat. If not, then maybe Verlander is an option

i think if ownership approves taking on most of verlanders contract a deal could get done as long as kyle lewis aint involved

The Mariners had some decent teams for Felix. He and Iwakuma both stunk it up in September and cost them a post season berth a few short years ago.

They were in the hunt down to the very last weekend of the season in both 2014 and 2016

For anyone in the Seattle area – have they given any possible timeline on how long Felix will be out?
