MLB Announces Suspensions From Tigers-Yankees Brawl

By Jeff Todd | August 25, 2017 at 3:54pm CDT

The league has officially handed down suspensions arising out of yesterday’s fisticuffs between the Tigers and Yankees. Detroit star Miguel Cabrera received the stiffest discipline, with a seven-game ban owing to his “inciting the first bench-clearing incident and fighting.”

Cabrera isn’t the only one who’ll take some games of unpaid leave (pending appeal). Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez got four games for throwing punches in the melee — he was fortunate, perhaps, not to take a harsher punishment — while fellow New York backstop Austin Romine got two for his part in the tangle with Cabrera. That could cause the organization some troubles with filling out its catching situation, though it seems there’ll be some effort to ensure the suspensions aren’t served simultaneously.

In addition to losing their star for some time, the Tigers will go without reliever Alex Wilson for four games because he threw at Todd Frazier after warnings had been issued — and then admitted it (somewhat admirably) after the game. Detroit skipper Brad Ausmus will also sit one out contest due to Wilson’s actions.

All of those players received undisclosed fines. A variety of other participants were levied financial punishment as well. Needless to say, there’ll be plenty of debate over the league’s actions. Tigers righty Michael Fulmer was not suspended despite plunking Sanchez earlier in the game. Likewise, Yankees righty Tommy Kahnle won’t be banned despite throwing behind Cabrera. And fellow New York righty Dellin Betances also avoided punishment though he hit Tigers catcher James McCann in the helmet with a pitch after the initial brawl.

Sanchez should have got at least 5. 4 is a lot for Wilson. And although Betances did not intentionally hit McCann, I’m very surprised he didn’t get at least 1.

Agreed, you should never get in trouble for telling the truth. MLB should implement this league-wide.

MLB: “We’re announcing that Bryce Harper has tested positive for a performance enhancing drug.”
Harper: “You’re right, I did it.”
MLB: “Oh, well, as long as you told the truth. No harm no foul no punishment.”

So if Wilson says it slipped, does he still get suspended? You’d hope yes, but most likely no.

And that’s where the MLB needs to step in and stop this garbage. These are Major Leaguers. They know exactly where they are throwing.

It worked for Betances. No suspension for head hunting. Guess there is no line that MLB won’t ignore for their Yankees.

That Betances didn’t get suspended — given the full context of things, which goes way beyond the 6-6 score, And includes violence perpetrated by both sides repeatedly to that point — is absurd.

A SP wouldn’t miss a start with a 4 game suspension but they would still lose salary. A 4 game suspension would cost Kershaw 878k.

The issue isnt throwing at the head. Its throwing at the head given the context.

No, anyone who hits someone in the head on accident shouldnt be suspended.

Yes, someone who hits someone in the head accident, or not, should be at least 1 game or fined say 50k or whatever just for the MLB to uphold integrity if a benches clearing brawl has happened and warnings issued.

If we are having to ask, ya know, did betances hit him intentionally or not that should be the indication a punishment needs to be handed down otherwise the MLB undermines their own integrity.

          Again, context is everything.

You have to admit the optics and timing of it seem inconvenient at best, intentional at worst, right?

I think it falls somewhere in between, say, he was aiming for the hip and missed up?

Yes. That would solve the problem immediately. Suspended after like 5-10 HBPs. If you hit a guy in the head it’s an auto suspension also.

It’s crazy that people get hit in the head with a 100 mph projectile and no one takes it seriously.

Hello. Is there anyone home between your ears or are you too busy reflect? Replay the video game to earlier in the year. Your boy Fulmer has done it in an earlier season and tigers announcers were trying to cover his ass with, ‘there’s something with his pitching hand that causes him to lose control.’

Please. The Yankees were embarrassing the tigers. Sanchez was a target.

The teams got nothing else to do–its in bad need of urban renewal. Got to get rid of the bloat (starting w hot head miggy). Your stuck for several more seasons with the remnants of Trader Dave’s indiscretions.

Ah yes, because the MLB always has to prove things to suspend players, no less prove they did it on purpose…

They decided a yankees pitcher didn’t do it on purpose. That is the whole point that some are trying to make.. it would seem, to some, that they (MLB) are showing favoritism to the yankees in this specific situation. Whether or not you believe that to be true, saying “they couldn’t prove he did it on purpose” is a poor argument.

For those who do not know, after Betances was ejected, David Robertson came in and hit the very next batter he faced. He was neither fined or suspended either. (FWIW, the count was 0-2 on that pitch)

It is so blatantly obvious that you are not thinking about the game of baseball.
It is a close game in the top of the 5th,(3-2) and NY has a guy on first. So you think Fulmer is going to hit Sanchez on purpose so he can then face Judge with two men on??? Fulmer is the Rookie of the Year in 2016, a gamer who wants to win and Sanchez has only one hit off of him. It is more likely he wants to get Sanchez out.

Yankees are the headhunters. As teams in separate divisions, NY/Det. only play each other 6-7 times per year. what are the odds that in a 4 game span, Detroit has 2 guys hit in the head, one guy hit multiple times, one or two pitches behind batters and about 6-7 total hit batsmen. Do Yankee pitchers suddenly not know where home plate is when they play Detroit??. Think about it.

Because Chapman had nothing to do with that. Romine either called for the pitch to be behind Cabrera or allowed Kahnle to throw it behind him. Chapman had just finished warming up when the brawl happened. Now if Chapman threw one of his heaters behind or at Cabrera, then I could see Cabrera picking a fight with Chapman but that’s not how it worked out.

If you give Fulmer one, you got to give Betances one. There is enough uncertainty on both sides (Betances said it slipped, Fulmer seemed to hurt himself a bit on the pitch) that I think MLB got it 99% right with Fulmer and Betances. The only thing they probably should’ve done was fine both (although not an absurd amount) for their roles in the exchanges even if it was unintentional (Fulmer hitting Sanchez led to Kahnle throwing behind Cabrera, Betances hitting McCann led to Wilson hitting Frazier).

Fulmer just wanted to move a very comfortable hitter’s feet. Don’t tell me he intentionally hit him. He wanted to come inside. Miggy gets what he should. Maybe give Romine a fine instead of 2 games. Sanchez should not be allowed to play for weeks. This is very dumb. What Sanchez did will be done again if no one is ever penalized for it. Sanchez must be loved by Manfred or something. I mean home run derby and getting left off thee hook for this. 4 games are what he would miss for having a broken nail. Wilson gets suspended because they have too. Ausmus can be suspended too, but only if Girardi gets the same.

If they consider that Cabrera was asking his teammates to hit a player on july 31st after the Yankees hit Mahtook twice unintentionally, then Cabrera would be hit at least with a few months off.

Players shouldn’t be asking their teammates to hit rival players, and we can be sure of it because after Cabrera went off and pointed to the Yankees dugout, Fulmer hit Ellsbury.

That retaliation was over. Once Ellsbury was hit you can forget it. Miggy deserves 3/4 of what Sanchez got at most. Betances’s no suspension is also ridiculous. Girardi gets nothing, but Ausmus does?

He was really the only pitcher I saw in the interviews after the game that said he didn’t do it on purpose, that he is not that kind of player that retaliates against rival players, and really he sounded sincere.

Cabrera on the other hand, was still challenging Yankees players to come after him, specially Sánchez, he said “if he wants to hit me, he has to come face to face”, which wouldn’t help Miguel at all after watching him trying to punch Romine to no avail, now we have confirmation that it was as easy for Avisail García to pummel Cabrera as a source said, when he witnessed Miguel waiting for Avisail to confront him (from other sources: Prince Fielder’s wife had been bragging she “bedded” him so Cabrera got angry).

I dont care if its intentional or not. Major league pitchers are in the Majors because of their control. You hit someone in the head with anything over 70 mph and you should be ejected with a suspension. No appeal

Major League pitchers aren’t in the majors because of their control. They’re in the majors because their skill sets allow them to be successful. One of those skill sets may be control, but this idea that major leaguers have pinpoint accuracy and the ball never gets alway is a fallacy.

Cabrera got what he deserved. He was the instigator. He kept asking Romine, “Do you have a problem with me?” Romine didn’t even make eye contact with him the first couple times and kept replying, “It’s not about you.” Cabrera kept it up wanting a confrontation with the smaller Romine. Sanchez deserved what he got too for the poor decision to swing instead of pull people apart. Fulmer should be ashamed for hitting Sanchez in the first place. I am all for retaliating if one of your guys is hit, but hitting a guy because he hit a homer off you is bush league and unacceptable. The umpire crew should all be fined. Handled this entire thing horribly.

7 games for Cabrera? A very short suspension considering he was also the instigator on july 31, mouthing off against these same yankees on NY, after Mahtook had been hit for a second time that night and a pitch had been inside to Miguel himself that he didn’t like. He pressed his teammates and Fulmer retaliated right after Cabrera scolded him for not doing it earlier. Fulmer hit Ellsbury on purpose that night.

The Yankees knew about that (they were asked after that game) so it was only fitting that right after Fulmer hit Sánchez, that they would pass one pitch as a warning to Cabrera to keep his mouth shut and not stir any problems. He decided to continue it so his arse got handed to him on a silver plate (and man, Romine really landed a few good punches).

As for Sánchez, fitting those 4 games. I thought maybe MLB would let Cabrera walk away free as they did with Harper who instigated a fight and was hit with a minimum suspension, though there was also the case of Puis punching Hinske on the head and MLB suspending Hinske 5 games for it (later reduced to a fine and 1 game), MLB decided after reviewing the video that Puig didn’t punch Hinske in the head, but that it was Hinske hitting puig in the fist with his head… or something like that because Puig was protected (as he was with the domestic violence case and the relation with the narcotraficants when he sent a hit against a narco in M’exico who was found dead after Puig asked them to shut him down or else he would not keep on paying them the money he owed them for smuggling him out of Cuba = they represented him when the Dodgers signed him, so he had to give them their cut).

Sanchez sucker punches not one, but two guys while they are being held down and gets 4 games? Should have been 15. I hope he gets what’s coming to him for that cowardly act.

Betances gets nothing for throwing at a guy’s head? Why? Because he’s less honest in his interview than Wilson, who got 4 games.

Joe Torre is so one sided on this one that if he was in a normal job, he would be fired. The correct punishment will come to Sanchez. Unfortunately it will now be administered by opposing players.

I guess the mlb officials heard Chris Russo ranting about how they should increase the length of these suspensions if they want to stop such fights from happening and then thought ‘let’s do the complete opposite’. Only 4 games for punching a player while he is being held down by another? That would land you in jail in most countries. No suspensions for Fulmer (who basically restarted the tensions that were there in the NY series by taking a shot at sanchez the at bat after hitting the home run), Kahnle and Betances? All of those hit by pitches were 100% intentional (although I don’t think Betances was throwing at McCann’s head). Are Torre etc. afraid of the players association or what? These suspensions are laughable.

Flat out guess but I’d say Girardi and Kahnle didnt get suspended (both got fined by the way) because both had gotten tossed before any of the brawls took place. Umps never gave a single warning to either team. Kahnle got tossed immediately, followed by Girardi ripping apart the umpire. I think both of them expected a warning from the ump.

Ausmus and Wilson both got suspended because it was clearly intentional that they hit Frazier (likely in retaliation of McCann being hit), though those occurred well after the first big brawl took place.

I’m trying to be as optimistic as I can. Decision isn’t made by me.

I think Sanchez should have gotten as much, if not more than Miggy. I have no issue with Fulmer or Betances getting zero, though Betances getting zero did surprise me. It was probably Alex Wilson and Ausmus’ stupid mouths for admitting to hitting Frazier on purpose which is what got them their suspensions for as long as they were.

Cabrera’ suspension was deserved, if not maybe too light. I get you’re frustrated dude but you essentially set off an on the field riot. Then we get to Gary Sanchez. Wow. 4 games for sucker punching multiple people? Real class act. How pathetic. Speaking of pathetic, Victor Martinez…..you’ve already dissed Tiger fan on multiple occasions. -Cabrera, for being the first to use physical force-7 Days
-Sanchez for excessive violence without warning-6 days, +Large fine
-Romine, for exceeding what one would call self defense- 2 days
-Michael Fulmer, for throwing at a player-Largest fine since giving 3 days to a SP is silly
-Betances, for hitting someone’s head regardless of intent in that situation gets a medium fine and 2 days(i dont believe he was aiming for head or even to hit him, but given the situation, even if it was innocent the message should be sent. This would be the appeal I would be most understanding of losing.
-Kahnle for intentional throwing at a player, 3 days
-Wilson for intentional throwing at a player, 3 days
-Robertson for intentional throwing at a player. 3 days
-Ausumus and Girardi- 1 Day each for behavior on the field and as the responsible faces of each team
-Huge fine for the Home plate Ump who didnt warn each dugout after Fulmer hit Sanchez
-Review for the rest of the ump staff for losing control of the situation

I think Manfred likes brawls given that they make the game more “attractive to millenials” and help draw conversation and twitter to the sport.

You really think David Robertson would intentionally throw at him on an 0-2 pitch? I’m not going to bother arguing Betances because everyone is indifferent on it, but you’re the first I hear saying Robertson’s was intentional.

Can somebody explain how Joe Torre was able to hand down these suspensions? Is MLB seriously becoming the same as professional wrestling?

Joe Torre is an idiotic fossil that should have disappeared from the game about the same time as Barry Bonds. Except Bonds actually had some talent and some reason to be associated with the game. Torre is a complete clown everywhere outside of the metro NYC area. Absolutely pathetic MLB and I say that as a fan that doesn’t like the Tigers.

Doesn’t sound like too many people are happy. Blame the stupid “unwritten rules”, Blame Fulmer for “accidentally” hitting a guy who had hit a HR already off of him, and shredded Tiger pitching through the series, Blame Sanchez and Betances. Blame Cabrera for mouthing off and instigating, And blame the umpires for losing control. Then you can blame Torre.

Honestly the umps should have been suspended as well. They had no control over the game. If they just gave a warning after the first hit by pitch (or given a warning after kahnle hit Cabrera) not throwing him out of the game with no warning after they hit you hottest hitter it would have been avoided not giving excuses to anyone involved, just horrible management by umps and they deserve some blame

I say forget warnings. If the ump thinks it was intentional he should toss the pitcher right then and there, and bam, there’s your warning for the benches.

I agree ‘Big Matt’ but it goes deeper than that. The umps should know HB tendencies ( i.e. Verlander 83 HB in 10 yrs. vs. Robertson 13 HB in 10 yrs. or Fulmer 16 HB in 2 yrs vs. Kahnle 3 HB in 4 yrs.) That is part of their job, right?

Why hate Betances? Unless you’re ignorant to believe he did that’s on purpose. Maybe you should have checked the standings. The game may be irrelevant to your 4th place Tigers , but it isn’t to the wild card leading Yankees. Nobody is stupid enough to put the go ahead run on base in the late innings. Maybe when the Tigers play meaningful baseball again and a similar situation happens with them, you’ll get the idea.

We’re not going to put a man on in a tight game in a playoff race. But we’ll totally throw punches and risk not just one game, but 4!

Yeah, the argument from situation went away the moment they started fighting.

Intentional HBP are thrown at the hip. Not in the head. If Betances did it intentionally , he’d be probably suspended the whole year , rightfully so. And I’m not defending Sanchez but he was probably quite upset that 1 – He got HBP without a warning and 2 – Miggy starting pushing and throwing punches at his teammates. The Yankees then rallied to tie the game. He’s not going to cause another bench brawl to put his team at risk losing the game (which is what happened). Get a clue.

Sanchez was a hot head and deserved a longer suspension. No question about it.

In the 7th, when they are down by 3- go ahead and risk suspension. Who cares about a stinking playoff race.

In the 8th, when it’s tied- Never! Why would we ever do something so blatantly stupid to chance us losing our spot in the playoffs???

This is literally the logical progression you have to take to support your position.

And it’s clearly how the league sees it, so clearly I am right. Sanchez was suspended for being an idiot. Betances unintentionally hit a batter so he wasnt. Not sure why you’re calling it my logic when that’s how the suspensions basically worked out (Sanchez was too short IMO)!

It probably won’t be on highlights, but as my post at the bottom says , Betances threw a FB today that would have hit Danny Valencia in the head, but he thankfully ducked in time. His control has been wild all year.

          Way to move the goalposts.

That’s not even the scope of this discussion. You argued, “Nobody is stupid enough to put the go ahead run on base in the late innings.”

I am arguing that clearly, the Yankees didn’t consider the context of their playoff chase when they ran out and threw punches. Why, all of a sudden, was it so idiotic (as though it weren’t prior) to then risk suspensions or lose the game? By the time Betances had the ball, they already had 2-3 guys facing suspensions. If it didn’t matter to them then, it certainly didn’t matter when Betances got the ball.

Not to mention, no one in baseball buys the “why would he do it then?” Teams know & players know to find a moment that seems like it would be an odd choice, and pick that moment.

Perhaps because there’s a 20 man in a bench clearing brawl and Sanchez is out there defending his teammates??? Ever think of that???

“Not to mention no one in baseball buys the Why would he do that”

Except that’s simply not true lol.
Why don’t you watch the post game and see both Ausmus and McCann mention they felt Betances had no intention of doing that. Many writers/journalists have mixed feelings of both Betances and Fulmer. But the league obviously felt neither intentionally did it. And if you want me to stop saying I’m on the fence about Fulmer, fine. I don’t think Fulmer intended to. But you’re going to find many who did. Just like there are many who think Betances did

What’s done is done and I’d like to end our argument here. Night man.

How about MLB states that fights aren’t part of the game, and have the cops running the security at the ballparks drag them out and charge them all with disorderly conduct or battery or whatever else they can come up with.

Interesting thought came out of this: what stops a player from pressing charges on another player for in game misconduct?

If I throw a ball at someone intentionally and they are hurt, they could realistically press charges. (Most likely would be a misdemeanor, but still.) Is there something in the CBA that prevents this kind of action?

      Reply
      • MB923

Not sure it’s in the CBA. But it’s probably because they’re both part of the Players Union and it would look terrible for one player to sue another. I could be wrong of course.

Obviously there’s an awkwardness to it, which is why it likely won’t happen.

But it Major League Baseball won’t step in and stop this, eventually, players are going to be left with no choice.

Yankees obviously being protected by Manfred and Torres. Red Sox would have got slammed. Betances and Kahnle should have got 4 and Sanchez should have got 10 for his cheap shots. Cabrera got thrown at too but at least fought a fair fight. Its not like Cabrera was pounding on Romine on the ground and needed to be punched to be protected. I thought Cabrera would have got 10 so he got off light too.

Throwing behind guys and hitting heads are far more dangerous than hip shots. Betances was throwing at McCann but with his command thats like a drunk driving. Anything can happen. Lucky McCann is still alive or not badly hurt. Nothing to stop Betances from doing it again. Not even a fine. LOL

Baseball has become so Pansified, if that’s a word, so weak rather!! 7 games, you’ve got to be kidding me!! Who remembers the greatest baseball brawl ever—Nolan Ryan locking up Robin Ventura like one of his cattle on his ranch?? He pounded Ventura and what happened—nothing! They even let him stay in the game and continue pitching! Baseball needs to stop changing for the worse and stay true to its roots. All that’s going on here is protecting money! The teams, and rightfully so from their point of view, don’t want their big investments getting hurt in a brawl but it’s hurting baseball! Pitching inside and even hitting the occasional batter is part of the game and the umps/league are taking this crucial part of the game out of the game! I mean can you imagine Bob Gibson, Don Drysdale, Nolan Ryan and Goose Gossage (to name just a few) playing in today’s version of the game with today’s rules??? It would be sad and they definitely would not have the success today in today’s league that they had back then when they could truly protect the strike zone and really pitch!
