Phillies Designate Pedro Beato, Select Contract Of Pedro Florimon

By Jeff Todd | August 17, 2017 at 6:29pm CDT

The Phillies have designated righty Pedro Beato for assignment. He’ll make way for the activation of infielder Pedro Florimon, who is joining the active roster.

Beato made just one appearance for the Phils before landing on the DL, though he did return to the majors for the first time since 2014. He had spent each of the two prior years pitching at Triple-A with the Orioles organization, producing sub-3.00 earned run averages in each season. And Beato was similarly effective in his 46 1/3 innings this year at the Phillies’ top affiliate, posting a 2.72 ERA with 7.0 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9.

As for the 30-year-old Florimon, this move puts him in the majors for the seventh consecutive season. He owns a meager .200/.261/.297 slash over 742 career MLB plate appearances, though he keeps earning opportunities due to his highly regarded glovework. Florimon has been useful at the plate this year at Lehigh Valley, batting .265/.347/.410 and even hitting ten home runs.

Woah. Beato sighting! Didn’t even realize he was still in baseball. He was a fairly well-regarded prospect about ten years ago.

I disagree. This is a Florimon sighting.

All Beato did this year was set the LV Iron Pigs record for saves with 27 before he was called up.. In JULY.

Most garbage teams jettison their AAAA players and replace them with prospects. There’s 2.5 weeks left in the minor league season, so there’s not many more games for prospects to play down there. The Phillies have chosen to pass over several prospects for a good field no hit shortstop when they start Galvis every game. Florimon is up to pinch hit.

They really didn’t have many other options. In AAA, Kingery and Crawford.
Phillies have a ton of Rule V eligibles and are trying to preserve spots, taking Kingery off the table.
Crawfords really hot right now, and I cant imagine they wanted to disrupt that now. Once AAA’s season ends he could receive a call-up.
The only other options were Hector Gomez and Angelo Mora–check out their numbers– they’re awful.
Valentin’s hurt too. Another option off the table.

Florimon will be dfa’d soon enough and they’re going to add others.

Galvis is a great shortstop, at 26 hes proven a lot, he replaced jimmy Rollins fairley well, Phillies fans are delusional if they think Crawfords performance deserves a call up, As for Kingery its a different story, he should have been up 2 months ago

Unfortunately its all about Rule V protection. Kingery isn’t eligible for the draft yet so they dont want to take a roster spot away from someone who they would like to keep. In the long run its the best call. Kingery will be up early next season. I’d predict May or June

Nothing this organization does leaves me surprised. The GM has fumbled nearly all of his tasks including: a) failing to deal Hellickson last year; b) Acquiring exactly nothing for Ken Giles; c) Extending McKannin without reason.

Hit post before I finished but you get the idea. His drafts have been poor and his FA signings questionable. He will later remark that this job was his “mulligan” just like Francona did when he took the Red Sox job after stinking with the Phillies.

        “FA signings questionable”

Questionable? $56 million for Pat Neshek, Jeremy Hellickson, Howie Kendrick, Clay Buchholz, Michael Saunders.

This $56 million was dispatched who who? What?

Fifty-six million flushed down the toilet.

Yoan Moncada cost $63 million. The Red Sox turned Moncada into Chris Sale.

That $56 million got us 5 prospects international bonus money valuable veteran leadership and kept pressure off of the kids to let them perfect their games.
And remember as recently as last July Saunders was a qualifying offer candidate. Don’t tell me you wouldn’t have taken that relatively inexpensive gamble- 1-year deal with a rather modest guarantee.
It’s a rebuild- Stop complaining about the Phillies being bad- we have the third best farm system in the league and remember just a few years ago the Astros and Cubs were abominations-

and the red sox may have gotten Moncada for $63 million but remember this- the Phillies got Sixto Sanchez, Franklin Kilyome, Odubel Herrera and Maikel Franco for under $100,000 combined.

“That $56 million got us 5 prospects ”

          ROFLOL!

I wrote “WHO?”, you wrote: “5 prospects ”

One of them had the surname of a famous rap star from two decades ago (or more). Never heard of them. No one at Baseball America recognized their names. Not one of them could have sniffed the bottom of a Top ___300___ prospect list.

          GARBAGE for $56 million.

How much did MacPhail/Klentak get paid this year to set $56 million on fire? They should both be convicted of arson and jailed for ten years.

John Middleton claims to care about homeless Americans. The salaries of MacPhail/Klentak could have housed dozens of homeless Americans in luxury one bedroom apartments for several years each.

      Honestly
I don’t get the hate for Klentak-
First of all, I view it as McPhail and Klentak. I personally think Andy has more influence than many believe.
I just look at the deals post June ’15 conpared to pre-June ’15. Other than the Rollins and Byrd deals, Amaro hadn’t done much for the rebuild in years. Literally a month after McPhail took office, the Phillies had a top-10 system and have improved on that status ever since. If you look at the Phillies trade history since June of 2015, there are no losses. Buccholz and Morton were both washes, but every other salary dump veteran acquisition has turned into prospects, Giles got us Velazquez back who still has high upside
Also look at the under the radar pick-ups
Odubel Herrera, Daniel Nava, Jerad Eickhoff, Andres Blanco

I have a lot of faith in the current front office

Buchholz is terrible, but it was a Hellickson type move. Buy low, hope for the best and trade at the deadline.

Buchholz arm was already blown out. Not knowing that is a level of incompetence that is unforgivable.

          FANS knew Buchholz was done.

$14 million taken off the Red Sox payroll and MacPhail/Klentak sent a player to Boston!

One of the most incompetent moves in MLB over the last several decades. They’re still laughing in Boston..

If you look at Buchholz last 2 months in Boston he posted extremely encouraging results. There was plenty of reason to believe his last 2 months could carry over. Why rush eflin back from knee surgery, why put Velazquez at higher injury risk by overworking him.

Why not do everything you can do to have the worst record in MLB so you can pick first in the MLB drat with the largest bonus pool to spend when you aren’t going anywhere that year?

That’s called REBUILDING. Supposedly that’s what the Phillies are doing. The White Sox are about to steal the first pick from the Phillies without a fight.

          Incompetence of an unforgivable nature.

Lol man, the Phillies have a 2.5 game hold on last place and are in the midst of a 5 game losing streak. Idk what else you want.
They’re minimizing risk of injuring their young players while it doesn’t matter by acquiring vets who soak up innings and have potential to be flipped at the deadline.
It’s a proven method that has worked for countless other organizations and it is being executed perfectly. 2 first overall picks in 3 years- please explain to be how this rebuild is incompetent when Aaron Nola has been an absolute stud, Herrera has quietly rebounded from a rough May and is mashing again, Alfaro, Williams and Altherr all look like the real deal, the front office managed to trade four veterans, three of whom were either hurt or awful and take a look at Sixto Sanchez.

Florimon isn’t the most talented but he’s a good extra guy to have around. Great in the field, very fast and smart base runner, and he is an always hustling kind of guy. He actually had a couple of very key hits for the Pirates over the last couple of years too.
