Mariners Designate Shawn O’Malley For Assignment

By charliewilmoth | September 2, 2017 at 3:00pm CDT

The Mariners have designated utilityman Shawn O’Malley for assignment, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweets. The move clears space on the team’s 40-man roster for infielder Gordon Beckham, whose contract the Mariners have selected from Triple-A Tacoma.

The 29-year-old O’Malley played a significant role on the 2016 Mariners, batting .229/.299/.319 in 89 games while playing six positions. This year, however, he missed time due to an appendectomy, then a significant shoulder injury. He hasn’t appeared in the big leagues at all and hasn’t hit much in 20 games with Tacoma as he’s tried to shake off the rust.

Beckham signed with the Mariners after the Giants released him near the end of Spring Training. He’s produced a .262/.313/.393 line this season for Tacoma. The veteran played in 88 games last year with the Braves and Giants, batting .212/.294/.347. He should provide a bit of extra infield depth for the Mariners down the stretch.

Yes, and Shawn O’Malley’s recent concussion just gave him new major league life.

Interesting how Vogelbach hasn’t been called up. He’s the only position player on the 40-man roster who isn’t with the big league club. Tacoma is out of the PCL playoffs, so no great need to keep him there. I think he’s fallen out of favor and is probably going to be dealt this winter to an AL team in return for pitching depth. The M’s and Rays seem to trade often, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Vogelbach end up in TB as part of a package for Alex Cobb.

Cobbs going to be a free agent post-season. I could see them getting a starter for Vogelbach.

They aren’t going to get anywhere near a starter as a return for vogelbach. They won’t even get a pitcher that is comparable to the one they gave up for him. Montgomery would have been a big asset to the mariners this season. They might even have kept O’Neill. There’s no that much like about vogelbach. He can hit AAA pitching but he is a DH and his pop isn’t great. I don’t see them getting much of anything for
        Him
