Athletics Designate Sam Moll, Jaycob Brugman

By Jeff Todd | November 20, 2017 at 7:36pm CDT

The Athletics have designated lefty Sam Moll and outfielder Jaycob Brugman for assignment, as MLB.com’s Jane Lee tweets. Oakland also added right-handers Heath Fillmyer and Lou Trivino to its 40-man roster, she adds.

Moll got a look in the majors after a mid-season claim from the Rockies organization. While he recorded seven strikeouts in his six innings, the 25-year-old was also touched for eight earned runs on 13 hits. In his 54 1/3 Triple-A innings on the year, Moll worked to a 3.64 ERA with 7.8 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9.

Brugman is also 25 and is also fresh off of his first taste of the big leagues. He got on base at a healthy .346 clip over 162 plate appearances, but managed only a .343 slugging percentage. In 172 trips to the plate at Triple-A, he similarly slashed .275/.355/.340.

I’ll admit, losing Bruggy stings a little bit.

I think you just like to say “Bruggy” more than anything else, he’s a nothing 5th OF at best, and he didn’t do anything in 2017 to deserve anything more than a AAA spot in 2018.

That’s part of it. Powell did make Brugman irrelevant though.

Would like to have kept Brugman in the fold another year. Maybe he won’t get claimed.
Mill was pretty terrible in limited chances.

Brugman rates as a 4th outfielder but teams could use him. He has always out performed his abilities.

Much like Patrick Wisdom, JB will live to play another day most likely in another organization…

Brugman didnt show it in ’16 but he’s got legit powet potential too. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him go off at some point in the future. Good plate discipline also helps him out.

Brugman is exactly the type of player the A’s used to pick up off the scrap heap back in the early 2000’s. Instead, they draft Brugman and then discard him – a player with value and get zero return on their investment.

Brugman was a 17th rd pick. How many 17th rders make the bigs?

If I were a team in the need of an outfielder, I would take a flyer on Brugman and then try to stash him away at AAA.

I’d be almost certain Brugman will be claimed.

It’s Brugman versus the younger Ramon Laureano. The A’s value Laureano more. Simple as that.
