Braves Claim Grant Dayton

By Jeff Todd | November 20, 2017 at 7:29pm CDT

The Braves have claimed lefty Grant Dayton from the Dodgers, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times was among those to tweet. He underwent Tommy John surgery this August.

Atlanta is also adding two lefties to its 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Adam McCreery and Ricardo Sanchez both had their contracts selected, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman tweets.

The addition of Dayton becomes the first acquisition for newly hired Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos, who is certainly quite familiar with the southpaw from his time in the Dodgers front office. Atlanta, evidently, can afford the greater patience — as well as the inconvenience of tying up a 40-man spot for part of the offseason — that comes with Dayton as he rehabs.

Certainly, Dayton carries an intriguing background to his new organization. He seemingly came from nowhere to dominate down the stretch and become one of the Dodgers’ top relievers in 2016. But Dayton showed signs of trouble throughout the 2017 season and ultimately struggled to a 4.94 ERA with 7.6 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9 in 23 2/3 innings before going down with a UCL injury.

Given the timing of the surgery, it’s fairly likely that Dayton won’t pitch in the majors in 2018. The Braves can, of course, add him to the 60-day DL to open the year, but will have to clog a 40-man spot in the meantime to maintain control rights.

Dodgers, Yankees both make series of trades to gain int’l money. Front runners to land Ohtani, both need that boost.

Dodgers can’t offer more than 300K so trading for pool money just lengthens the pool and has nothing to do with Ohtani.

I like it! This guy used to have big time potential. Now we’ll get to see if last year was a fluke or the beginning of a downward trend…for free

And Alex makes the first move. Anthopolus will be pillaging the farm if he is able.

So AA claimed both Dayton and Ravin. Interesting. He’s definitely back to his around the edges approach. I’m glad he received another, because he deserved it.

This is why I didn’t want AA to leave. Now he is using all of his knowledge to take away our guys for free!

Yawn. Why did I have to grow up in Atlanta? Why do I still follow the Braves? Has MLB made Matian a free agent yet?

Dayton has a good arm – wish him well and hope he finds his way back in good order.

I just don’t see Dayton staying on the 40 man roster all winter.

Does he need to? He’s not going to throw in 18, rosters are pretty full, probably a perfect time to outright the guy. The Dodgers tried, but their 40 man is pretty packed.

I agree, I think that is exactly what will be attempted at some point.

These 2 to Atlanta probably has alot to do with retaining Morrow

I’d argue it has nothing to do with Morrow. They just needed to clean to open a spot for a backend rotation depth piece and a very intriguing potential late bp arm. Dayton’s injury caused for a loss of a roster spot and Ravin well he’s a hard thrower, but is just not in there plans. It’s more of a situation where the 40 man is getting crowded.

Braves would be wise to keep Dayton for a year. It’s a cheap insurance policy for a guy that has rise on his FB and can get multiple outs. I see the Braves competing in 2019/20 so keeping him for a year to add to those young arms can only help the Braves win in 2019 and 2020. Great pick up by AA.
