Minor MLB Transactions: 12/18/17

By Jeff Todd | December 18, 2017 at 7:36pm CDT

Here are the latest minor moves from around the game:

  • Catcher Eric Fryer is heading to the Phillies on a minors deal with a spring invite, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports on Twitter. Now 32 years of age, Fryer has seen action in each of the past seven MLB campaigns but has only once topped one hundred plate appearances. He spent last year as a little-used backup in St. Louis. Overall, Fryer carries a .232/.320/.300 batting line in his major-league career.
  • Righty Erik Davis has inked a minor-league pact with the Brewers, per a club announcement. The 31-year-old had a brief but highly promising debut with the Nats back in 2013, but hasn’t returned to form since ensuing Tommy John surgery. Davis spent the 2017 season pitching at Triple-A for the Diamondbacks organization. over 63 2/3 innings, he worked to a 4.38 ERA with 10.2 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9.
  • The Royals have released southpaw Onelki Garcia so that he can pursue an opportunity in Japan, according to MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan (via Twitter). Further details are not known at this time. Garcia, 28, made it back to the majors in 2017 for the first time since his brief debut in 2013, though he was knocked around in six frames. In his 85 1/3 upper-minors frames on the year with Kansas City, Garcia pitched to a 4.75 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9.

Now or never for these out of date AAAA guys. Getting paid more to play than to hope for a minors deal.

Hello Jeffrey, there’s a slight grammatical error. You wrote: “The Royals have release southpaw Onelki Garcia…”

It should read “have released” (past tense verb).

Good job otherwise! Keep up the improvements.

      It’s a past participle; not a past tense verb. Sorry… I’m a grammar teacher.

Why do you or anybody else need to correct anything? This app is convenient and free and you troll its writers as if you have some kind of credibility to do so. You deserve to get your sports fix paying $14.99 a month. Then complain about bang for your buck. Otherwise screw off and let them keep giving us news.

“Then complain about bang for your buck” is actually a fragment. Your grammar could use some work too.

Appreciate the heads up. Fixed the typo.

Also appreciate defense of my honor, but for the record, I am always glad to receive notice of mistakes so they may be corrected. Always try to keep the errors to a minimum but some will inevitably slip through the cracks.

I could see Eric Fryer leading off for the Phillies in 2018. Smart pick up

He was an all star last season, do the know why he settled for a minor league deal, high upside for a catcher

Are you referring to the other Cardinals’ Catcher who made the All-Star Game?

Lol, I loved Eric Davis when I was young. Dude was a 5 tool player with style.

Ditto. Davis was downright elegant in the way he played and carried himself; class all the way.

    Nowadays we get Kyle Schrawber……

Always liked fryer. Hated when the cards let him go just so he could get singles against us later 8n the year with the pirates. You could do a lot worse as a depth option.

David Stearnes doesnt get enough credit for the job he has done in MIL. Lead a succesfull rebuild to early contention and refused to budge from the plan so far. Can’t wait to see what this team looks like in a year even as a Cards fan. It’ like a Hahn/Dippoto mash-up.

I liked fryer when he played for the pirates. He hit well for them, even though I know he hasn’t through his career. Best of luck to him.

The Phillies are incredibly deep in Catching. Barring a trade of Cameron Rupp, it would take two injuries for Fryer to see any major league time.
