Quick Hits: Lagares, Cubs, Darvish, Arrieta, Scott

By Connor Byrne | December 23, 2017 at 10:31pm CDT

The Mets are listening to offers for center fielder Juan Lagares, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. However, Puma notes that there’s skepticism within the industry about a trade coming together. New York may have to eat some of the $15.5MM left on Lagares’ contract in order to move him, suggests Puma, who points out that’s not something the team’s often willing to do. The Mets are already low on available spending room as it is – they may only have around $10MM to play with, per Puma – and that’s without having addressed one of second or third base (depending on where Asdrubal Cabrera plays in 2018) or adding a first baseman/outfielder.

  • As far as free agent right-handers go, the Cubs have shown more interest this offseason in adding Yu Darvish than re-signing Jake Arrieta. Regardless, the club doesn’t appear likely to engage in “a steep bidding war” for either, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. And while the 31-year-old Darvish may land the bigger contract this winter, Wittenmyer argues that the decorated Arrieta – who’s five months older – could end up as the better bet.
  • Former major league outfielder/designated hitter Luke Scott expressed interest in making a comeback at the Winter Meetings earlier this month, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports. The former Astro, Oriole and Ray hasn’t played in the majors since 2013, though, and he last suited up at the minor league level in 2015. The lifetime .258/.340/.481 hitter will turn 40 in June. If he can’t resume his playing career, Scott’s open to becoming a hitting coach, Kubatko adds.
  • Free agent righty Tyler Wilson is nearing a deal with an unnamed team, Kubatko relays in the same piece. To this point, Wilson has spent his pro career with the Orioles, who chose him in the 10th round of the 2011 draft. He saw action in Baltimore as a swingman in each of the previous three seasons and posted a 5.22 ERA, 4.77 K/9 and 2.42 BB/9 across 145 1/3 innings (42 appearances, 19 starts).

I tend to be Hyperbolic, which isn’t meant to be taken literally, but intended to demonstrate my fondness of Mr. Scott, despite my criticism of his facial hair style. I really did like Luke Scott during his playing days and You still understood my point.

But assume I meant 100% and if that’s not good enough imagine me recanting that statement, and replacing it with “100%”

Would have really disliked many 1970’s ballplayers then.. muttonchops, crazy beards and long hair was the in thing for ball players back then.

Check out a picture (if can find it) of a ball player named oscar gamble circa 76-78 who had the wildest looking afro and whose hat would constantly fly off whenever he went after a flyball in the OF because of it. The thing must have been over 12:” over his head and his mutton chops? very long.

Luke Scott was the Ted Nugent of MLB — a staunch Republican. I think because of President Trump’s approval rating being so low, there’s no chance teams would even want to watch Scott try out. Same thing Arrieta is finding out this offseason after he couldn’t leave politics out of baseball, that the offers aren’t what he thought they would be. Scott should have tried to come back a year ago when he would have gotten an opportunity.

Another note. When I read a team is interested in Darvish, I think yes every team is interested in Darvish, depending on the price. If Darvish is eggspacting to only want a 2 year $6 million contract every team in the MLB and most in Japan. Would be what you call interested. EGGcelente!

EGGcelente! This website says Team A is interested in a very, very, very good player. I say of course they are, every team is interested. Whether a team will try to sign them depends on the price they want to sign for. If Darvish was willing to sign for 2 years $6 million, teams would be trying even harder to sign him than they did for Shohei Ohtani. But if the Darvish would only sign for 17 years $789 million, he would have to retire from baseball. Eggcelent eggsample!!!

Has there been any reports of him getting anything cleaned up or worked on this offseason??

Idk, kind of like you alluded to, he just didn’t seem to be fully healthy last season…Arrieta is a freak when it comes to nutrition and keeping his body healthy, so he’s very in tune with his body…He’d certainly know if he was unhealthy…Maybe he pushed himself too hard, knowing it was a contract year?? Or possibly pitched through some pain and minor injuries, causing him to make small and uncomfortable adjustments to his mechanics??

Maybe he was thinking to just pitch through the injuries to not have the them listed and documented for teams to point to when they are trying to negotiate his upcoming contract, idk??

Obviously, idk, I’m not a big Cubs fan, nor did I see Arrieta pitch a bunch last year, maybe about 6 starts with mix results…So, I could be off completely..I’m just taking a guess, and asking out of curiosity, because something was clearly off…

Anyone have any educated guesses, or any further information on Arrieta??

Arrietta has some serious control issues. He rarely throws anything in the strike zone. Hitters start laying off his stuff by the second at bat, and the walks ensue. I don’t understand how no one else has noticed this. Anything he throws in the strike zone gets hammered, and he tends to lose his pinpoint control by the 4th or 5th inning.

First noticeable sign of injury to a pitcher is usually loss of location, followed by loss a in Velocity. Arrieta has a tough time rebounding from all the innings he threw in Cubs WS year.

I really don’t get the Mets
They have obvious needs in the rotation, infield and outfield, yet spend $14m on a reliever when they already have Ramos and Familia
Then== they proceed to give their GM an extension, but have less than $10,000,000 to play around with.
    The definition of dysfunction

Following the trend of most baseball teams – spending money on relievers instead of SP to shorten the game. At least they didn’t give $60M to a 1B when they already had a couple.

How is it that Wilpon is still operating the Mets as if he’s moments from bankruptcy? You’d think he was still making payments to Madoff. Just sell the team, and your troubles will be over unless $1B+ isn’t enough to satisfy your debts.

It’s really too bad that virtually every Mets story has to revolve around their unwillingness to spend–regardless of the amount.

      They spent.

      On Tebow.

      For non-baseball reasons.

The cubs should be going after lance lynn or alex cobb instead of darvish

The team that knows him the best doesn’t want anything to do with Jake Arrieta moving forward.

Maybe they know he stopped drinking his magic potion.

The problem with Jake is he thinks he should get 7yr 200mil and 6y 180 is a great deal when it should be more like 5yr 110mil with 24 the first year and 22 the second and 22 the third then 20 and 20 his last two and that is fair. I bet he told the Cubs 6yr 180 or I am gone and the Cubs said thanks for your time……

I still buy into my original theory, but…if they sign Darvish, I think they lose a third round pick, but if Arrieta signs elsewhere, I think they’d gain a second round pick, so there is a nice bonus there.

Typical Mets. They will trade Lagarus and he will be the next Justin Turner

I’m so scared we are going to waste one of the best rotations in baseball by continuing to operate like we’re the Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins. Not surprised at all to hear Kinsler rejected the deal to come here and went to LAA, he will actually have some protection in lineup! Players have zero confidence that they will be surrounded by any other bat, frustrating. I thought at least like a Starlin Castro type would be added. No our big winter move was bringing back a special advisor…happy holidays. LETS PRETEND WE ARE A BIG MARKET TEAM

Man Lo Cain would be ideal here in Queens. We have lacked team speed for years now (besides ol boy Reyes)
