NL West Notes: Dahl, D-Backs, Padres

By Steve Adams | January 3, 2018 at 11:08pm CDT

After a lost season due to a stress reaction in his rib cage, Rockies outfielder David Dahl has been cleared to begin swinging a bat, per Thomas Harding of MLB.com. The 23-year-old Dahl, a longtime top prospect, turned heads with a .315/.359/.500 slash in 63 games as a rookie in 2016, but his injury prevented him from logging a single game in 2017. A November MRI, however, revealed that Dahl’s injury has finally healed completely, according to Harding. Dahl has since been performing rotational exercises and building muscle mass as a means of strengthening the problematic area and avoiding similar issues in 2018. Dahl explains to Harding that he attempted to work back numerous times in 2017, but while he’d feel strong after two to three weeks of rest at a time, his symptoms would resurface upon ramping up workouts. Dahl also details changes to his diet and nutrition, both with an eye toward maintaining muscle mass, that he feels will help him stay healthy and emerge as a factor for the Rockies.

Elsewhere in the division…

  • Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen tells Steve Gilbert of MLB.com that he doesn’t feel his offseason work is done yet. While Hazen states that there’s no signing or trade imminent, he also notes that he’s still actively exploring both markets and feels there’s room for additions to his Major League roster. Gilbert notes that multiple teams have approached the D-backs about lefty Patrick Corbin, who will be a free agent next winter and comes with a projected arbitration salary of $8.3MM. Moving Corbin or right-hander Zack Greinke would free up the D-backs to spend more on the free agent market. Gilbert notes that the Diamondbacks are keeping an eye out for a potential long-term option at catcher and is also on the lookout for depth in the outfield.
  • The Padres have been stockpiling rotation options for the coming season but are reluctant to commit to much in 2019 and beyond, writes MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell (hence the decision not to re-sign Jhoulys Chacin). The Friars already have Clayton Richard signed through 2019, with Dinelson Lamet, Luis Perdomo and Bryan Mitchell all representing cost-effective long-term options as well. With that group in place and prospects like Cal Quantrill, Eric Lauer, Joey Lucchesi and Jacob Nix in Double-A (plus Matt Strahm, Colin Rea and Robbie Erlin returning from injury), the Padres indeed are well-stocked with long-term potential. Cassavell notes that the Padres, who’ve also recently agreed to offseason deals with Jordan Lyles (on a big league deal), Tyson Ross (minor league deal) and Chris Young (minor league deal), are weighing a six-man rotation in 2018 and beyond.

I’m a Yankee fan, but the Rockies are my next favorite to watch on MLB.tv, and I would love to see Dahl get 500 ab’s to see what he has to offer.

I’m expecting Parra, Desmond, McMahon, Dahl, and Tapia all to rotate a bit and get 300-600 ABs each.

They need to settle on 3…that Desmond signing looked terrible when they made it and it looks 10x worse now. It’s going to cripple them. Dahl & Tapia need regular AB’s, and Ian Desmond is gonna block McMahon in the OF and 1B….

I agree they need to settle on 3. Desmond in Left, Blackmon in Center, and Dahl in Right. Start McMahon at 1st base. Sign Lucroy to start behind the plate with Iannetta as backup. Tapia, Valaika, and one or two more guys come off the bench.

          Blackmon
          LeMahieu
          Arenado
          Dahl
          Desmond
          Story
          Lucroy
          McMahon

That could be a fun lineup to watch.

Dahl won’t stay healthy let’s just be realistic.

Forget about Lucroy-don’t need him-he’s too pricey. Dahl is a good prospect who will have to work his way into the lineup following his injury. I like Parra as a starter in the OF.

Should use Corbin for a Realmuto deal..

I don’t see why the Marlin’s would want Corbin. They would be better off sending him elsewhere.

So many teams can beat that deal in a heart beat.

The idea of having prospects means your offer is amongst the top choices…..that offer isnt, not even close. it would probably rank middle of the pact.

Of those, duplanter has the most appeal….pavin smith doesnt have power for a 1B (james loney type), banda got rocked this year at every level including mlb, ellis same issue as pavin just not enough power.

If the dbacks seriously wanted realmuto it would start with people at the mlb level- ketel marte, brandon drury, and duplanter along with clarke or banda to round out the package.

Pavin Smith has only played about 50 games in pro ball. I wouldn’t give up on him so quickly. The power is going to come.

A D-backs fan can dream… how about this framework for a deal between Arizona and Miami… AZ sends to Miami their Cuban-born mistake signings from the prior regime Yasmany Tomas (3 more years under contract for a total of $46 million!) and Yoan Lopez (AAA-Relief Pitcher on MLB Depth Charts, essentially a throw-in) plus speedy CF Socrates Brito (rookie eligibility intact), starter Patrick Corbin, slick-fielding SS Nick Ahmed and AAA-pitcher Taylor Clarke (#9 team prospect – 2018 Baseball America), 2017-2nd-rounder C Daulton Varsho (#5 team prospect) PLUS $25 million in cash to put toward Corbin and Tomas’ $56+ million. For all that, Maimi sends catcher J.T. Realmuto and outfielder Christian Yelich to the Snakes! I can dream, I can dream.

Yeah, I understand where you are coming from, but that’s just a bunch of junk . Tomas is a negative-value player, Lopez is, as you point out a triple-A reliever, which has almost no value. Corbin is a #4 starter, nothing bad but not great. Brito isn’t ever going to hit. Ahmed is a terrible hitter.

The Marlins just gave away players to cut payroll. Why would they want Tomas even if it came with cash? If the DBacks picked up 100% of his salary the Marlins still wouldn’t be interested in the other players…15-20 teams could beat that offer.

What do you think, the Marlins GM is like Al Avila of the Tigers? You already gave away the extra practice baseballs left out in the rain for two weeks for JD Martinez!

That’s some dream…although, with the way Jeter & co. are running things that $25M to offset salaries would probably catch his attention enough to pull the trigger on a deal this far-fetched…

If we could turn Yasmany into one of those guys somehow, that would be great.

If you want to turn Yasmany DFA and release him you still pay him and some low team like padres or giant might take him for MLB mimium. on a 1-10 scale Tomas is a 0. . but so is a lot of diamond back players

Padres need to go get Avila. A guy who can play first and relieve Hedges. Affordable, has some experience behind the plate and can help the young pitchers that are destine to come up over the next couple years. This Hosmer talk is not even worth talking about. Going to that ballpark will be a negative impact on his already low power.

I’m glad to hear Dahl is working towards recovery. I’m hoping he can contribute to the Rockies offense part time at least. He has good potential and is still young.
