The Braves announced that they’ve acquired right-hander Shane Carle from the Pirates in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Pittsburgh had designated the 26-year-old Carle for assignment over the weekend in order to clear space on the roster for the players acquired from Houston in the Gerrit Cole trade.
Carle made his Major League debut with the Rockies in 2017, tossing four innings and surrendering three runs on six hits and no walks with four strikeouts. It’s not a lengthy sample, to be sure, but Carle’s fastball averaged a healthy 93.6 mph in that short time. The 2013 10th-round pick (by the Pirates) spent the bulk of the year in Triple-A in Colorado, where he struggled to a 5.37 ERA in a hitter-friendly setting. Carle averaged 7.3 K/9 against 3.2 BB/9 with a 43.9 percent ground-ball rate in Albuquerque — his second go-around at that level.
Though the Pirates were the team to initially draft Carle, this is the second time they’ll trade him away to another organization. Pittsburgh traded him to Colorado in exchange for righty Rob Scahill about 18 months after he was drafted, only to pluck him back off waivers earlier this winter when the Rockies cut him loose. Carle has a pair of minor league options remaining, so the Braves can send him to Triple-A this spring without needing to expose him to waivers. Atlanta already had an open spot on its 40-man roster, so no corresponding move was necessary in order to accommodate Carle. The Braves’ 40-man roster is now at capacity.
That’s it. I’m done as a Pirates fan. First Cole, then Cutch….now SHANE CARLE?!?
Neal Huntington has lost his da_mn mind!!!!!
They should have let Houston keep Musgrove and not DFA Carle.
What
First thing when I read acquire was ‘yes, a trade!’… bummer. Well, the Cutch trade will do for this month.
“Or cash”
Hopefully $2.5M worth that the brass shipped to SF….WITH McCutchen.
Ugh.
Weird how the pirates were able to trade him for cash but the Rockies trade up lost him for nothing
Yeah they got 2 dollars and a bag of balls
Colorado got $20k in the form of a waiver fee, but yes, Pittsburgh did get lucky that the Braves wanted him badly enough to pay to keep him off of the wire. While the amount in cash cons is probably marginal, it only makes sense that it would be higher than $20k to keep him from being claimed. I would imagine Pitt gets $25-$30k or an inconsequential A baller like Hayden Deal
*Googles single A roster*
I can admit to that on this one, lol!
Braves and Rockies front offices do not like each other. Goes back to the Braves taking Dan Winkler in the Rule 5 some years ago when he had just had TJ surgery (considered bad form).
Bad form? Are you kidding me Sling Blade? You’re the 1st I’ve ever heard mention this. That’s like a team playing a shift on a player…then complaining when a player bunts his way onto base!
If The Rockies valued Winkler…they should have put him on The 40 man roster. Just because one is injured…does not mean that your organization gets ‘a free pass’ from having a player drafted via The Rule 5 Draft (that would be outright collusion…..delaying a player from being paid like a Major Leaguer).
Even though WInkler is still eligible for The ROY Award in 2018…he was eligible for Salary Arbitration this offseason! Still, The Braves have to keep Winkler on The 25 man roster for another month…or risk losing him back to The Rockies (being stashed on The Disabled List…does not count towards the one year service a Rule 5 Player has to be…before a player can be sent to The Minors).
However, Winkler looked pretty good in September of 2017 when he finally recovered from his ACL surgery. Unless he melts down to open the season….I feel that The Braves plan for WInkler to play a prominent role in our bullpen for 2018. The Rockies loss…could finally be a Braves gain in 2018.
Who? I am excepting Ja Hay to be next.
Pirate legend 🙁
This is the biggest signing of this offseason so far
Is this a depth move or do they see something I don’t?
His numbers were inflated some due to playing at altitude. Could be a diamond in the rough kinda thing for Atlanta. If the cash going back is minimal then why not? He could also be included in a larger deal, cough Yelich, cough.
Yelich is not coming to Atlanta.
Gotta keep on believing that it’s possible.
While I agree with most of your points, you lost me at “included in a larger deal… [for] Yelich.”
I’m not referring to “just” Yelich, in my larger deal idea. I’m still holding out hope for a much larger deal between Mia and Atl.
Yelich, Prado, Tazawa, and Ziegler to Atlanta
Kakes, Swanson, Ruiz, Allard, Anderson, Hursh or Cumberland, Caryle, S Freeman.
This accomplishes a lot for both teams, Mia gets a lot of young+(ish) talent with the exception of Kakes who for 1 yr can hold down an OF spot. Allard is Top 100 Prospects (#22), Top 10 LHP Prospects (#1) while not Acuna, thats pretty freaking solid as the headliner for Yelich, with Anderson who’s #51 on the 100 list.
why would the braves trade swanson? his value is low after a bad season and they need a SS. the fact youre including Anderson and Allard is a really good package for yelich.
I highly doubt this is the missing link to that deal
I don’t think Carle would be a deal breaker whether or not he is included in a Yelich trade. The Pirates got this guy on waivers a couple months ago, this doesn’t really increase the chances of the Braves getting Yelich.
If the Marlins want him for some reason, they could get him in a Yelich trade (along with other much higher rated minor leaguers or possibly major leaguers), but right now doesn’t add much value to a trade. He is only 25, so he could improve, but right now he is a AAA player that could be called up to fill in for an injury.
Pirates suck, but I love taking road trips to PNC Park, my fav in all baseball! The structure, field, and view are awesome!!! Can’t wait to visit again.
Looks like a great park. It’s on my list to visit.
What angry, sad soul felt the need to downvote this comment?
Amazing ball park. I love Camden Yards, but PNC crushes it.
It’s unbelievable that the guy who designed PNC figured out to aim it’s open view at the city’s skyline and the guy who designed Heinz Field decided it best to have the open end face an empty dirt hill with a 70 year Bayer sign.
Hopefully, there will still be a player you recognize next time you get there.
anyone else sick of seeing this image this off season?
Yup haha
Shane Carle probably is.
So the Cole deal now includes Musgrove, Martin, Feliz, Moran and whatever the Bucs get for Carle.
Shane Coral
Rick Grimes?
and people thought other days were slow. this one ranks near the top.
A truly amazing and gratifying trade worth of trade of the year awards. Thanks for your obvious insights intelligence and ingrown outlook. Worthy of the John McHale Award
take the cash
