Rangers Sign Deolis Guerra

By Jeff Todd | January 16, 2018 at 12:15pm CDT

The Rangers have struck a minors deal with righty Deolis Guerra, per a club announcement. He’ll participate on the MLB side of spring camp.

Guerra, 28, becomes the latest in a succession of pitchers to sign on with the Texas organization over the winter. If he can’t earn his way onto the active roster in camp, Guerra will presumably take up a spot near the top of the Rangers’ relief depth chart.

Texas has seen plenty of Guerra in recent seasons, as he has played with the division-rival Angels organization. In 2015, the righty spun 53 1/3 innings of 3.21 ERA ball with 6.1 K/9 and 1.2 BB/9. Despite that useful output, he was removed from the Halos’ 40-man roster last spring.

Guerra ended up bouncing between the MLB roster and Triple-A in 2017. In the majors, he sputtered to a 4.68 ERA in 25 frames, over which he uncharacteristically handed out a dozen free passes but did show a surprising 14.9% swinging-strike rate. Guerra carried a 1.98 ERA with 9.0 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 in his 41 innings at the highest level of the minors.

That’s a good depth signing for the Rangers.

He was very good for the Angels in 2016- wish he had been given a more consistent opportunity last season

Nothing against him personally, but nothing speaks to the utter, unending boringness of this offseason more than Deolis Guerra getting his own headline and writeup on MLBTR.

Amen to that! I usually enjoy the offseason almost as much as the season. But right now I’m dying for Spring Training to get here!

Believe it or not this nobody was one of the prospects the Mets sent to the Twins 10 years ago for Santana

That’s fine for depth but if the Rangers really want to compete, they need to lock in a solid veteran reliever who can fill many roles. It would suck to lose out on a playoff run because they didn’t sign a veteran reliever.

Someone gets to write about the acquisition of Andrew McCutchen and someone gets to write about the acquisition of Deolis Guerra.

Why won’t the Rangers sign a top closer for? Who are they waiting for anyways Darvish to make up his mind? Move on and get a top free agent closer, pitcher or center fielder. A great catcher wouldn’t hurt either. Maybe trade off odor and his contract and get a stud second baseman. There’s all kinds of options left out there. Daniels and company are just to scared to actually go put there and get someone worth wild. If they wanna contend this year and actually make the playoffs they better get off there butts and do something. They have the money and resources now to do so. Just to afraid to do anything about it. Daniels needs to be fired and we need someone new who ain’t scared to making big decisions on trades and free agent signings. Everyone that plays in the MLB has a price and can be traded or contract bought out. Just my opinion I think the Rangers needs to do what the Astros did and completely tear down and rebuild the whole entire team and front office. So that way way by the 2020 season when they do move inside to there New field of dreams they will hopefully have a championship team once again. Like I said it’s just my opinion. I wish them all the best in the 2018 season, but I don’t think they will be a contending team for the next few years.

And also we can’t forget about Choo and his killer contract, who would want to take that on anyway? Why not dump him and Odor and there contracts to let’s say the Marlins(just for laughs) and get back some mlb ready players and top line prospects? Let’s just say hummm like the Yankees or the Red Sox’s for say they can can work a package deal out for a three team trade. There’s a million ways to get these two gone and plus throw in John Daniels in the mix and somebody should run with it. Say a triple A or even a short season A league somewhere. Like I said before all of this is my opinion. What it boils down to, to me is the Rangers gotta have a total rebuild of there intire program. From the bat boys all the up to the c.e.o. Wouldn’t hurt if they had a new owner either. Start fresh with new owners and coaches and players. Look if they can build a multi million dollar golf course and range with all the bells and whistles, they can afford top of the line players. But who would want to play in Arlington in the summer? And at hitter friendly ballpark?

It might seems that I’m making a big fuss over all of this, but I’m tired of paying high ticket prices and cable bills just to watch the Rangers implode. With all the promises they make the fans of a championship season and going to go to the playoffs ain’t exactly working in there favor. Yes I’ve slowed way down on watching the Rangers play. And that’s my choice to do so. I don’t and won’t agree with upper management decisions that they make. They are called the re-hab Rangers for a reason. This signing thing they have with sign low hope for the best haven’t really worked out for the best for them. So in closing I do hope for the best for Rangers in the up coming seasons. It’s just they like making boneheaded choices and do really dumb contracts(Choo and Odor). Good luck to the Rangers.
