NL Notes: Cubs, Gohara, Norris, Mets

By Jeff Todd | March 9, 2018 at 9:43pm CDT

The Cubs have a pair of former players entering their front office, per a club announcement. MLB veterans Chris Denorfia and Matt Murton have been named, respectively, as special assistant to the president/GM and baseball operations assistant. Denorfia, a ten-year big-leaguer, spent just one year in Chicago — his final campaign in the majors, 2015. Murton, meanwhile, broke into the majors with the Cubs but mostly found success abroad as a member of Japan’s Hanshin Tigers.

Here’s the latest from the National League:

  • Braves southpaw Luiz Gohara is going to be shut down for at least two weeks after suffering an ankle sprain, as David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Though it doesn’t seem as if there’s anything approaching long-term concern for the injury itself, there are implications. For one, there’s now little chance that Gohara will open the season in the rotation, as he has already been limited in camp. That means another pitcher — O’Brien suggests Max Fried or Scott Kazmir, though others are also certainly in the mix — will likely take that slot. When Gohara is back to health, moreover, he’ll presumably need to boost his conditioning along with getting his arm up to full speed. The big-bodied southpaw previously strained his groin in a camp workout and has long faced questions about his weight. Of course, that did not prevent him from an impressive five-start debut showing in 2017.
  • The Cardinals have decided to put righty Bud Norris in the bullpen, Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. That’s not terribly surprising, but the organization had at least been stretching him out as a starter to open camp. Norris showed some renewed vigor at times last year as a late-inning reliever and could be used in that capacity, though skipper Mike Matheny also did not rule out relying upon Norris for multiple innings in a swingman role. In other news from St. Louis, the club announced that outfielder Tyler O’Neill has been diagnosed with a hamstring strain. The severity is not known, but the the odds were already stacked against the well-regarded prospect cracking the Opening Day roster.
  • Kevin Plawecki could receive the lion’s share of the time behind the dish for the Mets, Tim Healey of Newsday writes. New skipper Mickey Callaway says it will often come down to platoon splits in deciding whether Plawecki or Travis d’Arnaud is behind the dish, with the former’s advantage against right-handed pitching perhaps leading to greater opportunities. Surely performance levels over the course of the season will weigh into the calculus, but Callaway clearly indicated that the organization is disinclined to match up their backstops with particular starters.

Gohara will recover and be back to form mid season, if not no problem he will be ready in 2019. Braves should consider making an offer for Brett Nicholas cast aside by the Rangers. Rob Brantley plus a teen age pitcher should do it.
Highly prejudiced to mention his size in the article. No one said Camargo tripped last year because he was skinny.

By nature, you are less flexible and more prone to injury when doing physical activities if you are overweight. The additional weight is also very tough on tendons and joints especially in high intensity efforts such as pitching.

Fat people are more susceptible to injury as the above poster explained. Get out of denial.

Being overweight could cause issues for some, less so for others. But being too thin works exactly the same way. In fact guys who are a little bulky compared to those who are too thin are way more durable. Not to mention the literal slew of buffed up meat heads in the middle who cannot stay off a DL list.

It says he has long faced questions about his weight. Now he has had two recent injuries where weight could make the return time lengthier, not even mentioning weight could have played part in the initial injury. Very fair to bring up the weight, as it is very relevant.

I believe this injury could secure an additional year of control of Gohara for ATL.

Not if he is already On the 40 man roster, I’m pretty sure he will be on the MLB DL, not the MiLB dl. Therefore he would be getting major league service time and not even be playing.

America is overweight. It’s a fact.

Per the CDC…..70% of Americans are overweight or obese.
Per the CDC…..36% of Americans THINK they are overweight.

Is Gohara overweight? He’s a Big Man. He’s listed at 6’3″…..210 lbs.

That doesn’t match up very well with the pictures that I’ve seen.
        He looks like he’s 250+…..especially at 6’3″.

        Can anyone verify these stats?

He is at least 300. And not defensive lineman 300 – those guys are extremely muscular. This is couch potato 300. He pulled his groin on an early-ST jog and now sprains his ankle; one might opine that he hasn’t been very physically active over the offseason.

I don’t think anyone has gotten him on an official scale or anything, which obviously will never happen. MLB numbers on this are always a joke.

Anywyas, as a Braves fan I am really pulling for this guy to get serious about his training. He is an amazing talent.

To be fair to Bart…dude is AGILE. Seriously…he is really flexible and he can make some great defensive plays. His behind the back throw on his way to the dugout without breaking stride is still one of my top 10 baseball plays of all-time. Admittedly…his HR to left field is on that list too.

Wait, what were they going to do with Kazmir if he wasn’t in the rotation until Gohara got hurt? Converting to reliever? Didn’t hear about that..

Honestly? Nothing… around mid-late season they are going to have too many pitchers and unless he pitches amazingly, not much room for Kazmir (and if he pitches great then the Braves will probably flip him). I’d say Kazmir gets no more than 5 starts with the Braves all season

This paragraph about the big news from the Cardinals is probably the fore runner of main Cardinal topics during the 2018 season. Talks about a washed up starter, who Mozeliak dumpster dive signed to take the place of Lance Lynn, now moving him to the bullpen to see if he can pitch in relief. The relief for the Cardinals will be when John Mozeliak, President of Cardinal baseball Operations, retires, quits or moves to China!! It’s so frustrating to see former Cardinal players on teams that make the playoffs and the current Cardinal players watching the playoffs on TV.
