Twins Acquire Jake Cave, Designate Kennys Vargas

By Jeff Todd | March 16, 2018 at 2:34pm CDT

The Twins have acquired outfielder Jake Cave from the Yankees, per Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press (via Twitter). Righty Luis Gil goes to the Yankees in return. In a corresponding move, Minnesota has designated slugger Kennys Vargas for assignment.

The 25-year-old Cave just didn’t have a place in the Yankees’ plans with the organization already sporting a variety of quality outfielders at the MLB level. Meanwhile, Minnesota was likely not going to carry the out-of-options Vargas after signing Logan Morrison.

It’s not immediately clear how the 25-year-old Cave will fit on the Twins roster, given that the club already has left-handed-hitting outfielders in Eddie Rosario, Max Kepler, and Robbie Grossman (who is a switch-hitter). But the organization may just have decided it was worth taking a chance on Cave’s upside while letting him develop at Triple-A to start the year.

Last season, Cave turned in a robust .305/.351/.542 slash with 20 homers in 437 plate appearances in the upper minors. He’s considered a quality all-around player who can play any of the three outfield positions. Of course, Cave has yet to have a chance to show whether he can carry his promise into the majors.

The switch-hitting Vargas is a defensively-limited slugger who has shown some pop, but also some swing and miss, in reserve duty over the past four MLB campaigns. He carries a .252/.311/.437 overall slash with 35 home runs in 859 trips to the plate.

As for Gil, he’ll represent something of a far-off lottery ticket for the Yanks. The righty has not yet advanced past the Dominican Summer League, but did put up a solid stat line there last year. In 41 2/3 innings, he worked to a 2.59 ERA with 10.6 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9.

Nice typo, Luis Gil is going to the Twins in return….

Shouldn’t that read “Luis Gil is going to the Yankees in return”?

The number of grammatical errors on this website is unacceptable. In case people missed it this website is not someone’s hobby or some small mom and pop operation. MLB trade rumors is one of the most visited websites in the world and generates tremendous revenue. The writers all have credentials to give them access to major events. There is a tremendous amount of money at mlbtraderumors yet they won’t spring for a proof reader.

As everyone has helpfully pointed out, I mistakenly wrote that the Twins were receiving Gil when, of course, he is going to the Yankees. That typo is now fixed.

Let me just say that we self-edit and write on the fly. You can’t really insert an editor into that process, though we do certainly edit longer pieces that aren’t published on the go. I think we actually have a pretty solid track record given the model.

For what it’s worth, writing the wrong team name is not a grammatical error.

You do have a solid track record as does this website. That is why it is so popular and you are making money hand over fist and Steve Adams has a very nice new car. You all turned mlbtraderumors into a goldmine. All I am saying is you reinvest. Just write the story and email to an editor who briefly reads it and then posts it. God knows you have the money to do this.

nah, would much rather keep the process for updates fast than include an editor who will occasionally catch something. Never seen an error on here that couldn’t be easily figured out from context clues.

“I work too hard to deal with this stuff. I drive a Dodge Stratus!” – Steve Adams

Actually, Steve does not own a car. But I bet his rent isn’t cheap in NYC! He’s also going on vacation next week.

Truly, utilizing an editor just does not jive with the publishing model here. Otherwise I’m sure Tim “Money Bags” Dierkes would employ several. They could be on call for editing while also maintaining Tim’s eclectic collection of vintage sports cars, installation art pieces, and one-of-a-kind Cubs memorabilia.

“The number of grammatical errors on this website is unacceptable.”

Then don’t accept it. Obviously this site has decided that posting breaking stories quickly is worth the occasional spelling/grammar/typographical error. You are free to disagree. Leave in protest, if you feel the need.

What bothers me is when people comment on a post and the post is subsequently edited without a note to that effect, leaving those who commented on the original post high and dry, appearing to be some combination of blind and stupid.

It’s pretty standard practice that when a posted piece is edited a note is posted stating that the piece has been edited and the substance of the edit, as Jeff sorta did in the comments here. Should be at the top or bottom of the piece itself, but at least it’s somewhere.

      • Jeff Todd

If there’s a substantive error, we certainly make note of it. In my view, though, adding a note in the post itself isn’t warranted when we’re talking about fixing what was obviously a typo. I suspect that’s the same basic standard newspapers would apply to their online written work.

As to the concern re the comments, that’s exactly why I always try to acknowledge the mistake in the comments section. Definitely not trying to run away from our missteps.

“Definitely not trying to run away from our missteps.”

That’s not what I was suggesting. Unnecessary arguments/exchanges of abuse have occurred due to two sets of commenters seeing two versions of the piece in question. Not sure why you’d choose to allow this rather than clearing things up at the getgo.

“ . . . adding a note to the post itself isn’t warranted when we’re talking about fixing what was obviously a typo.”

Not to nitpick, but the instant case wasn’t a typo, Jeff. A typo would be spelling “Twins” as “Twons” or somesuch. In this piece “Twins” was spelled “Yankees”—that’s a brain fart, not a typo. Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us. But it should be acknowledged somewhere in the piece itself.

Cave’s ranked New York’s 27th best prospect by MLB Pipeline heading into 2018. That equivocates to top-15, on some teams? Their OF depth may be the best in the league. Here’s Jake Cave’s scouting report below for team gets him:

    Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

“Cave doesn’t have a true plus tool yet, but also lacks a glaring weakness, a profile that will make it tough to take an everyday job in New York but could make him a useful fourth outfielder. He has made consistent hard contact and shown the ability to work the entire field throughout his pro career. After hitting just 11 homers in his first three full seasons, he started incorporating his lower half better in his left-handed swing to generate power and went deep a career-high 20 times last season.”

“Cave has the solid speed to provide occasional steals. His quickness and average arm allow him to play all three outfield positions, though he probably fits best in left field. Average defender in center field and solid on the corners.”

.305 BA and 20 HR lifetime minor league numbers. (406 AB’s)

Gil;s actually a pretty good prospect. While he has some control issues, there is some potential. Still just 19, logged strong K and GB numbers in rookie league. Obviously far away, but certainly a good move for the Yankees.

Cave should at least be given a major league opportunity, however Minnesota may not be the best landing spot (Buxton, Rosario, Kepler, Grossman, Wade, Granite)

I’m surprised at the significant turmoil over minor mistakes in this post. I come to MLBTR for up to the minute news, and if getting news NOW means I have to suffer through occasional grammar issues, slight inaccuracies, or someone mistakenly writing the wrong team name, that’s more than an acceptable price to pay for the service. And seriously, when you have a job, you get to buy things, like Steve getting a new car. People get new cars in all sorts of business organizations and it has little to nothing to do with what the work is that is being done. We don’t need anymore bah humbug, Christmas has long since come and past.

Even if I did notice them I’d like to think of myself as not D-BAGGY enough to post to the writer about his 1 or 2 word slips on a piece he’s generally breaking b4 the masses.
The reason why I’m so upset about this today when it is has become a pretty common occurrence in the comment section is bc today some asshat mentioned proxy and ads.
1 of the greatest quotes ever was a few b4 my rant.
“I’ve never clicked on a pop up ad on purpose”. Truer words have never been spoken.
I don’t think I’ve ever once even accidentally clicked on a pop up from this site. I’ve never had much of an issue with pop up locations or the usually battery draining auto-plays most sites use.
    Then today happens.
While usually known as the “commentators curse” today we’ll call it the “commenters curse”
At least 3x clicking on this story and probably 4 or 5x on other stories today I have been redirected to sites ranging from turbo cleanses to truck purchases.
I repeat never once have i even accidentally been moved from this site to pop up. Now some ass decides to bring up this site making bank hand over fist and I can’t even click on a story without getting redirected somewhere.
Thanks, much appreciated. If grammar police weren’t alrready worse then lawyers this new “commenters curse” has pushed their putrid existence to a whole new level.

If there is a player in todays game who could turn into the next David Ortiz, its Kennys Vargas.

I could see Dan Vogelbach following along those lines as well.

You obviously haven’t seen him play. The Baldwin brothers all look like Alec, but that doesn’t mean they can act.

Vargas hits lots of long batting practice homeruns, but he shows none of David Ortiz’ talent.

David Ortiz showed none of that talent until he left.

Yes, he did. Tom Kelly and Ron Gardenhire tried to change him, and were both wrong about his potential. The Red Sox simply let him play.

David Ortiz batted .272/.339/.500 over 466 AB his final season on the Twins with and OPS+ of 120. He showed plenty of talent.

actually not at all people like the cop because they’re both twins that were DFAed but I would be surprised if Vargas was even worth 4 wins for the rest of his career much less on a per season basis like Ortiz was. (I’m on 100% guessing on what Ortiz value was but I assume it had to be something pretty good)

So this just loads the Yankees with even more pitching prospects than any other team in majors right now.

The hate on the Yankees is unreal. This doesn’t load up, or change anything. It’s likely Downgrade for NYY in the short-term, with eye towards long-term development.

Gil isn’t even ranked in Minnesota’s top 30 prospects. (Unlike Cave, ranked top-30 in NYY’s system) Adding insult to injury, MIN’s farm system isn’t even top-10. (Towards middle) Gil, 19, spent last season in Dominican Summer League throwing 41.2 IP, 2.59 ERA (3.34 FIP). Yankees are hoping they got him, before he breaks out.

Not a chance. Well, there’s a chance, like there was a chance for Lloyd Christmas to end up with Mary Swanson in Dumb and Dumber.

Meanwhile judge has a big mouth tying to recruit Machado. Also judge says he won’t be participating in the hr derby in the all star game. Have they even named the all star team yet or already?

My prediction is Vargas become the next David Ortiz. Dropped by the twins for nothing and becomes a super star power hitter.

Whats worse: people who complain about minor grammatical errors, the people who complain about the people who complain about minor grammatical errors, or the people who complain about the people who complain about the people who complain about minor grammatical errors??

I dont know about you but my pick is the people who complain about the people who complain about the small grammatical errors. Although the people who complain about small grammatical errors make a strong case. Hmmmmmmmmm
