Minor MLB Transactions: 4/1/18

By Connor Byrne | April 1, 2018 at 9:54pm CDT

The latest minor moves from around baseball…

  • The Tigers announced that left-hander Ryan Carpenter will be assigned back to Triple-A Toledo.  Carpenter was called up as the 26th man for today’s double-header with the Pirates, and he made his Major League debut in the nightcap, starting the game and lasting three innings.  A seventh-round pick for the Rays in the 2011 draft, Carpenter has a 4.37 ERA, 7.7 K/9, and 3.36 K/BB rate over 760 1/3 innings (128 of his 115 games as a starter) in the Tampa Bay and Colorado farm systems.

Earlier Today:

  • The Red Sox have released outfielder Steve Selsky, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation tweets. Selsky was a member of the Cincinnati organization from 2011-16 before joining Boston last season. The 28-year-old spent nearly all of 2017 with Triple-A Pawtucket, where he hit .215/.270/.360 with 11 home runs in 322 plate appearances. Selsky also appeared in eight of Boston’s games, though he only picked up nine PAs in that span.
  • The Pirates have parted with outfielder Clark Eagan, according to John Dreker of Pirates Prospects (subscription required). Eagan, 23, had been with the Pirates since they selected him in the ninth round of the 2016 draft. He spent that year at the Low-A level before moving up to Single-A in 2017. In all, Eagan batted .265/.316/.385 across 604 trips to the plate with the organization.

Waiting for someone to go up to a player and say they were released, and when they’ve packed up say “April Fools!”

Pretty hilarious. Selsky insisted on personalizing an autograph for me during spring training, likely so it couldn’t be sold on eBay,lol. Enjoy the Atlantic League my man

He could be a genuinely nice guy also. Found some in the old days when used to get them and found players in places not on the field who would shake hands and ask name, them customize and autograph like that without asking, then there were some habitually grumpy.. George Scott.. jim Rice who had a scowl on their face and would try an about face when a stranger would turn up. People like Tiant, Doug griffin, Rick miller were always kind toward fans in that way and long time veterans to boot.

LOL No. Notice he said he insisted. As a former graphhound, inmate is 100% spot on as to the logic as to why he personalized. Funny thing is there are ways to remove the personalization if one actually wanted to make $0.25 on the loser’s sig.

Of course, you know I did remove it. It looks stupid. Not like it’s a photo or something substantial. Nope, just a clown who thinks highly enough of himself to believe people are making bank on his autograph

Man, y’all are brutal. You’re trying to use his name for profit (admittedly very little profit, because he’s not good) without compensation. I’m surprised most of these guys sign for adults at all TBH.

I think ya may need to work on the reading comprehension there my brother. Nobody is attempting to, nor making a dime off Steve Selsky. Trust me on that. Even if you were selling your signed cards, after you take into account hotels, flights, food, rental car, gas, etc, please for the love of god explain to me how anyone could not lose money. Sounds like if you’re doing it for profit and not for fun, you’re a pretty lousy entrepreneur.

Loved Tiant. My dad took me to see him pitch one half of a double-header at old Municipal Stadium in Cleveland.

And yet you asked him for an autograph. Meh.

It’s what autographed card collectors do. Still never ceases to amaze me how much some scrub sandwiches overvalue themselves, where as some elite top prospects and stars can be unbelievably humble. People are interesting .

Who’s buying Steve Selsky autographs anyway? In fact, why would you want one?

That’s the point. Nobody is buying them. But again, why do you get a 24 year old kid in the New York Penn Lg who you know will be released that fall? Bc you enjoy collecting signed cards. Why do people collect stamps? Star Wars? Coins? Whatever makes someone happy.

I know you’ve said in other replies to this that you enjoy collecting autographs, but if you really dislike the guy so much, why even bother collecting his? Collecting doesn’t mean that you have to have everything.

I don’t dislike the guy. I sort of pity him. How was I to even know how he’d be? I don’t have a crystal ball.

I always thought Selsky had some ability. I hope he lands somewhere.

Funny thing is. I’ve played with Ryan carpenter multiple times in a season and even a few years in Boston with him until a year or two before he retired. JK it was on MLB the show 17.
