Reds Designate Yovani Gallardo

By Jeff Todd | April 10, 2018 at 1:07pm CDT

The Reds announced today that they have designated veteran righty Yovani Gallardo for assignment. His roster spot will go to fellow right-hander Tanner Rainey, whose contract was selected.

Gallardo, 32, spent camp with the division-rival Brewers but was cut loose before the start of the season. He joined the Cincinnati organization shortly thereafter on a deal that reported came with a $750K salary. It’s not clear, though, whether some or all of that sum is guaranteed.

Though it’s still quite early, Gallardo is off to a brutal start. He has allowed eight earned runs on eight hits and four walks while logging 2 1/3 innings. The veteran has had trouble finding the zone and been hammered when he has. That follows some rather distinct struggles over the past two campaigns, as Gallardo carries a 5.57 ERA in his past 248 2/3 innings.

Still, it stands to reason that another team will come calling on Gallardo, though he’ll surely have to spend some time in the minors before another MLB chance opens. From 2009 through 2015, after all, he averaged 191 innings of 3.69 ERA annually. While it’s no longer reasonable to anticipate anything close to that kind of productivity, Gallardo could end up being seen as a handy depth option to have around.

As for Rainey, the 2015 second-rounder could make for an interesting addition to the MLB relief unit. He has a big arm and took off after moving to a full-time relief role in 2017. Splitting the season between the High-A and Double-A levels, Rainey compiled a 3.19 ERA with 15.1 K/9 and 4.8 BB/9.

I’m pretty sure the Brewers did too. At this rate, he’s going to be the highest payed player in the MLB

I think i saw that it was a split contract that pays less in the minors

I’ll happily take what he made for 2 weeks of work at his job that he didn’t even have to be good at instead of working hard at a job for 20+ years to make the same amount. Good Lord.

Halo, habeebo! Have you needed to train for your entire life to be in the top 0.1% of janitorial assistants worldwide? Gallardo need to train since he was young to get this contract. Have you need to travel around the country, work where your employer tells you, and have your whole life revolve around janitorial assistant duties. Habeeb not! Gallardo did.

You don’t get paid that kind of money for working hard. You get paid that amount for having a skill that very few have. Or at least having that skill at one time.

No amount of training is getting me to the majors without the talent. If you too our at 60mph you can’t go to a camp and find the missing 35.

Gallardo could go and become a great janitors assistant. The current one can’t become a mlb pitcher.

And you can have all the talent in the world, but be a failure. Unless you work hard and practice. Talent is useless without the work.

It’s about time they DFA’ed him. Selecting Rainey doesn’t seem to make sense on the surface though, given that we will likely need a 40-man spot for Senzel on Friday

I think they aren’t ready to bring Senzel up! They want to prepare him for second base because Jose Peraza and Dilson Herrera has been a big flop! Reds need to get rid of their scouts because of so made bad trades the last few years! Sick of hearing rebuild!

Still don’t understand why the Reds won’t trade Votto for lots of prospects.

Votto. Has. A. No. Trade. Clause. That. He. Will. Not. Waive. How is that so difficult for everyone to understand? Even if they wanted to trade Votto, which they probably don’t anyways because of his elite status, Votto himself would have to want to be traded, and he’s made it very clear that he has no intention of going anywhere

Yaaaaaawn….while I wish him the best, I’m glad he’s not taking up a roster spot. On a side note, fellow Reds fans; I just want to say that I’m past tired of the Billy Hamilton thing. Love the defense and electrifying speed, but stolen bases are not what they use to be. I dunno what to say except for, please move him along for a song.
