White Sox Acquire Trayce Thompson

By Jeff Todd | April 19, 2018 at 7:20pm CDT

The White Sox have announced the acquisition of outfielder Trayce Thompson from the Athletics. Cash or a player to be named later will head in return.

This move explains the team’s other just-announced transaction, as Thompson will require a 40-man spot. It’s the third time Thompson has changed uniforms since the start of April. He entered the month in DFA limbo after being dropped from the Dodgers’ 40-man and then moved to the Yankees and on to the A’s.

The result is that the 27-year-old will land back where things began for him back in 2009, when the Sox chose him in the second round of the amateur draft. He first reached the majors with the Chicago organization back in 2015 and since then has compiled a cumulative .232/.307/.440 batting line in 459 total plate appearances.

This is why I love these threads, lots of White Sox fans called it, or said they didn’t understand why WSox didn’t claim him, when he was first claimed by NYY. Hopefully his journey ends there

I disliked your comedic jab only because I don’t wish an injury on anyone. That being said, I regretably laughed a bit.

Predicting and wishing/hoping is two different things. If I predicted the warriors were going to win the finals you wouldn’t think I was wishing for them to win it.

Fair enough. It just felt hypocritical to dislike the comment when I showed laughter. The line between hoping for and predicting is a line I don’t want to cross personally. That being said, with a username involving two polarizing topics, I assume you tend to walk a mighty fine line regularly.

@politicsNbaseball, As a Knick fan, I always predict my team’s out of it every year— and my prediction comes true. Then I predict Warriors or Cavs win it – and that prediction also comes true ;P

So does Trace take Saladino’s spot on the 25-man, or is there another move coming tomorrow?

I obviously don’t know their exact plan, but I’d like to think that he’ll get a shot at some playing time in CF over Engel in the near future. Tilson and Cordell haven’t shown anything in AAA so far (plus Cordell just busted up his collarbone), so they don’t have anyone really fighting for that spot in the near future.

Either way, I don’t really care what they do right now and will be happy with whatever choice they make, so long as potential future CF options like Basabe and Rutherford keep killing it in the minors.

*That High-A team is pretty filthy – can’t wait till they start moving up and/or Robert catches up with them.

Not certain that i understand this move. Why do the sox value Thompson over Saladino? Seems to me that Saladino at least provided more defensive diversity.

Because they don’t need his defensive diversity, and his bat is absolutely horrible. Both Leury and Yolmer can play just about any defensive position on the field as well (if not better) than Saladino.

And I’d imagine they value Thompson more because he can play a good defensive CF, and their current CF option appears to be allergic to hitting baseballs.

Did Thompson ever leave his apartment during his waiver wire journey?

This is actually a great question. The only game I remember him playing was for Oakland in LA.

I highly doubt he ever joined the Yankees and Oakland was in Anaheim when they claimed him.

I’d wager he never did leave his LA residence.

Now all we need is for the White Sox to claim Asher and DFA Thompson.

I liked what I saw of him in 2016 with LA. He can hit ML pitching, he just needs to adjust to regular playing time. Saladino was never gonna hit despite the fact the fans loved him.
