AL Notes: Beltre, Rays, Astros, K. Tucker, BoSox, JDM

By Connor Byrne | June 24, 2018 at 3:26pm CDT

Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is reportedly available, though it’s no sure thing the team will trade the future Hall of Famer, Jeff Wilson of the Star-Telegram writes. Rather, the Rangers are interested in keeping Beltre, an impending free agent, in hopes of re-signing him prior to next season. In order to deal Beltre, the Rangers would need a return that outweighs the benefits of retaining the 39-year-old through the season and trying to re-sign him, Wilson hears. And should teams make offers for Beltre, general manager Jon Daniels will keep the player informed, Wilson reports. Given that Beltre has 10-and-5 rights and has enjoyed his time with the Rangers, Wilson notes that it’s not yet known whether he’d accept a deal to leave the team.

  • The Rays plan to part with a host of veterans in the coming weeks, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Catcher Wilson Ramos, shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, outfielder Carlos Gomez and relievers Sergio Romo and Jonny Venters stand out as vets who are the most likely not to finish the season with the team, Topkins suggests. Similarly, righties Chris Archer and Nathan Eovaldi, infielder Matt Duffy and reliever Chaz Roe aren’t locks to end the year in Tampa Bay, Topkin adds.
  • There’s “a decent likelihood” the Astros will promote top outfield prospect Kyle Tucker later this season, president of baseball operations Jeff Luhnow told Astros Radio on Sunday (Twitter link via Christian Boutwell of MLB.com). The 21-year-old Tucker, widely regarded as one of the game’s premier prospects, has held his own this season in his first taste of Triple-A action. Tucker has slashed .314/.382/.509 with 10 home runs, 13 stolen bases and solid walk (10.2) and strikeout (19.4) percentages over 324 trips to the plate.
  • Slugger J.D. Martinez is thriving with the Red Sox, who signed him to a five-year, $110MM deal over the winter. But Boston first “tried” to acquire Martinez last summer, president Dave Dombrowski revealed to Rob Bradford of WEEI. When Martinez was with the Tigers a year ago, the Red Sox, Indians and Diamondbacks were among the most aggressive teams in attempting to trade for him, according to Bradford. Martinez ended up with the D-backs – who landed him on July 18 – in part because the Tigers placed a higher asking price on him in talks with Boston than the other teams, Bradford hears.

Seems very stupid that the tigers would place a higher asking price on Boston. Shouldve maximized their return on the guy. He ended up in Boston anyway, not that it even matters because Detroit wasn’t going to be pursuing him in FA anyway.

“the tigers placed a higher return on the Red Sox than other teams” what part of that suggests they maximized their return By trading with the D-Backs? How about some reading comprehension. If they turned down a more valuable package from the Red Sox than the one they received from the D-Backs that’s just plain stupid.

Sounds like your also stupid, you raise a price on any certain you minimize your potential return. Sox could have still offered more then ari but det wouldn’t take it Bc they wanted the sox to over pay aka being stupid.

I was making a pretty cut and dry point. To raise the prospect value needed to acquire JDM for ONLY the Red Sox seems very dumb to me. If the Sox offered a package Detroit believed was more valuable, I can’t see why you wouldn’t accept that. I don’t know if that has to do with Detroit’s front office not wanting to help their old GM or something else.

It never says that Boston offered the better package, just that the Tigers asked. Don’t forget that Dombrowski was previously the GM of the Tigers, so there could be some resentment there.

Makes zero sense to call up Tucker to ride the bench, so this means the Astros are including Kemp or Reddick (less likely) in a trade for a closer by the deadline. Otherwise, let him stay at AAA until September callups.

If, Shoulda, almost, but, and any other excuses don’t fly in sports. Especially “injuries”

Plus everybody and their brother knew Chris Paul would strain his hammy at some point, yet the Rockets traded for him anyway.

I even told you in January it was coming and bammo, right at the perfect time for you rocket fans… he blew his hammy. Sorry about that.

Now sign him to a supermax and have your hearts crumble Every Spring. Thank you, have a nice day.

Oh, and the Astros are very good. They kicked my Red Sox butts last year in the playoffs but I hope it doesn’t happen again this year. Your starters are amazing but I’ve got my fingers crossed J D Martinez going to be a one-man Wrecking Crew.

If you make a statement I take it as a statement. There was no just kidding attached or LOL.

Plus you’re a fair-weathered fan. The Rockets lost so you disappeared from basketball rumors. You’re only on here cuz the Astros are the best team in baseball right now. I’ve got to come over here and find you to razz you about my Warriors beating your Rockets.

Okay, all done with… let’s go Red Sox.

Ldfanatic may, in fact, be a fairweather fan, I really don’t know, but he seems to be consistent in his fandom, being both a Rockets and Astros fan.

Gary, my question to you is, how does one become a fan of the Red Sox and the Warriors, organizations on complete opposites side of the country? That’s the tell tale signs of a bandwagon fan considering bith have won multiple championships in the past 10 years, which is even worse than a fairweather fan.

Because he is a bandwagon fan. It’s pretty simple. I am also a Titans fan, which were the Oilers. Unlike ole Gary, I’ve followed the same teams my entire life. Whereas Gary started rooting for teams once they started winning. Its admirable.

Red Sox fan since 1978. I grew up in Victoria Canada and moved to San Diego California hockey was not big so I started following baseball the Red Sox and Yankees were playing the Saturday game of the week and I picked the Red Sox my brother picked the Yankees and it’s been that way ever since. The Red Sox were tough to follow all those losing years in the eighties and nineties but you know how it is, you stick with them. For better or worse. Same with the Warriors. I became a fan in 1987 when I lived in San Jose. And once you start following a team you can’t really leave them even if you want to. So again the 90s and most of the 2000s were rough. I’m just in a good spot right now both my teams are doing pretty well and all those years of losing is paying off now.

One thing I don’t get is why do people such as Idfanatic say the word “butthurt” here? I’m really not familiar with that activity or term. It doesn’t sound fun I hope you enjoy it to go thru the pain afterwards. To each his own I guess.

Seems weird to retire when you’re still dang productive. There are plenty of teams that could accommodate a time share of 3B/DH for him.

Daniels has to put the word out that Beltre is available. Unlike last year, more teams are in sell mode come July 31st. Texas, smartly, trying to get ahead of the “arms race” as other selling teams are looking to reload.

    AL East: Rays, Jays, O’s
AL Central: should be everyone but Cleveland
AL West: Rangers, A’s, possibly Angels
    NL East: Mets, Marlins
    NL Central: Pirates, Reds
NL West: Padres, possibly Rockies and Giants.

If teams wait too long this year they may miss out. Should be interesting.

I think Kyle Tucker will get the call up in Sept after the AAA season ends, unless there’s an injury.

Kemp is doing great, and deserves his starts. I think it’s unwise to assume that Tucker could come to the Bigs and immediately outproduce Kemp.

I’d be happy if the Astros kept him down, sent him to the AFL, and called him up after a few weeks to ensure 7 years of control.

Yup. Kemp has impressed since the call up. He deserves every chance to be a starting LF for the Astros. At this point, I would only call Tucker up of the Stros trade Reddick or Kemp.

No one is trading for Reddick. Contenders trade prospects not starters for prooven help like Reddick. And non-contenders trade prooven commodities for prospects. Therefore there is no market for Reddick. It’s Tucker time. Springer, Reddick and Tucker everyday outfield with spots from MarGo and Kemp. Kemp is not an everyday outfielder. Tucker has the luxury of not having to come in and carry a team.

I like the idea of Beltre or Solarte to Boston as right handedbats. I saw Cahana as an interest but I rather see someone like Ramos or Perez. Perez is a perfect fit. He can catch as a back up behind Vaz or Sandy and play 1B. Plus if JDM plays left Sox can get an extra bat in the mix catching Perez Mitch at 1B then DH Pedey Holt Nunez w whoever does not play to a gr8 bench Holt Nunez Vaz JBJ and Blake. Blake would like to in a trade for Ramos or Perez but the bat included would be huge. Beltre would bring GG D at 3B again in Playoffs allows JDM to play left and Devets to DH. That line up would look like Betts, Benny Beltre JDM MM Xander Devers Pedey/Holt Vaz/Leon. Adding Perez Solarte or Ramos makes it equally as scary. Adding Solarte adds a 25 HR at 2B. The weakest infield link DD might crave BP help but Getting guys in AAA and AA on point would b equally as effective. Why teams dont ask any arms who have 95plus FB to work on location and 1 pitch to show. 3 outs w a gr8 fastball is easy if you can locate it where you want. Just ask NYY reliever Greene. He never throws anything but his fastballl
