Cardinals Claim Tyler Webb

By Jeff Todd | June 29, 2018 at 3:08pm CDT

The Cardinals have claimed lefty Tyler Webb off waivers from the Padres. The San Diego organization, which announced the move, had designated Webb for assignment recently.

A tenth-round pick in the 2013 draft, Webb moved quickly to the upper reaches of the Yankees system and has always produced quality K/BB numbers. But the 27-year-old has received limited opportunities in the majors. He has just 13 total MLB innings on his ledger, with those coming with three different teams over the past two seasons.

This season, Webb has thrived at Triple-A. Through 22 innings, he has allowed just five earned runs while recording 28 strikeouts against eight walks. But in his time in the bigs, he has shown only a low-nineties fastball and swinging-strike rate of just over eight percent.

Mo loves that low hanging fruit tree that hangs outside the MLB offices.

Low hanging… Bud Norris was low hanging fruit and Greg Holland was high hanging fruit. Tell me who has been worth more?
Jose Martinez, one of the top 12 current hitters in baseball over the past year was acquired for cash considerations. Mo makes smart decisions.

White beard….while I do agree with your example, there are a ton more names that these readers could name you that Mozeliak purchased, traded for, or picked up as free agents that were flops instead of contributing players. I wouldn’t call him dumb. But he made more poor decisions as far as recent acquisitions over the past 3 years. Some he obtained during that time you haven’t even seen on the field this year. If so, they are used sparingly.

Have you ever noticed that the majority of Mozeliaks flops cost very, very little? Fans seem to be quick to forget that the main reason a lot of these moves are being made is because if they don’t pan out, who cares? They lost NOTHING on the deal if the player doesn’t rebound. Mozeliak and his staff have done very well at balancing potential talent that other teams don’t see with cost; it’s why he has been so effective at constructing winning rosters.

They should be paying Norris, Pham, and Martinez four times what they are making, and that effectively cancels out the “bad” deals in Fowler and Cecil

Ok, so he pays Pham and Martinez four times what they’re making? Ok, that’s a whopping $2M each. What’s he paying Leake? Where’s the guy he got for Leake playing right now? Mo makes just as many bad decisions as good. That’s why this team is looking from the outside at a 3rd consecutive season of playoffs. Are you guys blind?

sure he does. He never makes a mistake. Mike Leake. Leone. Cecil. Gregerson. You think he could use Joe Kelly right now? Brayan Pena. Broxton. Fowler. etc. etc. Jose Martinez will be in the A.L.. sometime between now and next January. These “smart decisions” have amounted to what in the last 3 years?

So you’d rather still have Kelly and still be paying craig this year instead of getting Lackey and his sub 3 ERA for 1 and a half seasons, 2015 being at league minimum salary and finishing 9th in Cy Young voting? I don’t think many people are missing kelly considering what we got for him.

The Cardinals just have to get the Padres back for all the pitchers they take

All the pitchers the Padres have taken from the Cardinals? Luis Perdomo and Rowan Wick? Lol give me a break.

You do realize the Cardinals employ, Luke Gregerson, Bud Norris and Miles Mikolas who are all ex-Padres within the last 5 years.

Miles Mikolas was a Padre first. What’s your point?

Khalil Greene was traded for Luke Gregerson.

He wasn’t “taken” like the commenter above referred to.

A cardinal fan should never hate on a Padre fan because if it wasn’t for David Freese… well you know the rest

Well, Lyons hasn’t been the shutdown lefty that he was last year, and Gomber is up and down also. Cecil has shown signs of improvement his last few outings. Who knows, maybe Tyler can help stabilize the pen.

Well I’m bias. I’m a South Carolina fan and always been a big fan of Tyler Webb. All he needs is faith. People to believe in him and him to believe in himself. I’ve always wanted the White Sox to get him.
