The Athletics have lost a pair of rotation pieces in the past three days, placing lefties Sean Manaea (3.59 ERA, 160 2/3 innings) and Brett Anderson (4.02 ERA, 65 innings) on the disabled list due to a shoulder injury and a forearm strain, respectively. Since being placed on the DL on Sunday, Manaea has been determined to be suffering from tendinitis in his rotator cuff, manager Bob Melvin told reporters today (Twitter links via Jane Lee of MLB.com). He’s been shut down from throwing, and the A’s aren’t certain yet whether he’ll pitch again in 2018. Meanwhile, Anderson is set to undergo additional testing to evaluate his injury.
However, despite that pair of notable losses, the A’s aren’t likely to make a trade for a starter in advance of Friday’s deadline for postseason eligibility, tweets Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. If there was any doubt based on that report, Oakland general manager David Forst went on record with Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle and, while he didn’t expressly rule out an addition, he characterized any such move as decidedly unlikely.
“We said when got Mike Fiers and Fernando Rodney how lucky we were that guys like that were available and we were able to make the deals,” said Forst. “And I don’t know if there is anything available outside the organization that can help us at this time.”
A look at the list of players known to have cleared revocable trade waivers reveals names such as Gio Gonzalez, Alex Cobb, Andrew Cashner, Francisco Liriano and Jordan Zimmermann as options to be freely traded. All five of those hurlers have under-performed to varying extents in 2018, and Cobb, Casnher and Zimmermann each come with undesirable contractual obligations beyond the current season. It’s possible, of course, that other arms have cleared or are currently on revocable trade waivers, but it doesn’t sound as though Forst and the A’s are keen on adding from outside the organization based on what’s currently available.
Internal options are the preferred route, it seems, but Forst made clear that top prospect Jesus Luzardo won’t be called upon to step into the starting mix. The 20-year-old Luzardo is among the game’s most highly regarded prospects, but he’s two and a half years removed from Tommy John surgery (March 2016) and has already seen an increase from 43 1/3 innings in 2017 to 109 1/3 innings in 2018. He’s made a rapid ascent to Triple-A, but his workload and importance to the Athletics’ long-term outlook are both understandable reasons for the Oakland brass to have some trepidation when weighing a potential promotion for Luzardo.
Forst indicated to Slusser that expanded September rosters could allow the A’s to utilize a bullpen-heavy approach to patching together the pitching staff. The Rays have already aggressively employed a bullpen-forward tactic in 2018, using relievers as “openers” and frequently leaning on bullpen days in lieu of a more traditional starting rotation. Such an arrangement is one of multiple approaches the A’s could contemplate when plotting out the remainder of the season. Relievers Yusmeiro Petit, Lou Trivino and Emilio Pagan are already accustomed to recording more than three outs per appearance.

For the time being, Oakland will plug right-handers Frankie Montas and Daniel Mengden into a starting staff that also includes Fiers, Trevor Cahill and Edwin Jackson. Chris Bassitt is the lone remaining healthy option on the 40-man roster, as the Athletics’ depth has been ravaged by injuries in 2018. Right-handers Kendall Graveman, Daniel Gossett and Jharel Cotton have all undergone Tommy John surgery, as has top left-handed pitching prospect A.J. Puk. Meanwhile, Andrew Triggs is on the 60-day DL due to a nerve injury, while Paul Blackburn has missed the past month-plus due to elbow issues.

I’d take Gio back for scraps, you can never have too many starters.
justin-turner overdrive
Gio Gonzalez is absolutely terrible this year, Mengden and Montas are WAY better bets.
Solaris601
I completely agree. He’s a rental, and that’s all they need right now.
justin-turner overdrive
They definitely need a longer term deGrom MUCH more than a washed up Gio.
jbigz12
Degrom isn’t happening on August 28th. And if/when the Mets do decide to sell him other teams will have more to offer than Oakland.
jay1947
I am a Nationals fan. You can have Gio for 3 jock straps; he is garbage
stevewpants
Get Gio, that ball park and history with the team sound good
arc89
Do the A’s get a medal for having the most starting pitchers on the DL in a year?
natelowda2
St. Louis is right there with them.
arc89
All 5 of St louis starters are on the DL?
bravesfan88
Lol…Yeah, The Indians, Dodgers, Brewers, Yankees, Braves, Cubs, Red Sox, Rockies, and especially the Cardinals are all contenders that have had some serious injuries to their pitching staff..
However, take a look at the injuries The A’s have dealt with, and then take a look at some of the names they are successfully using as replacements in their rotation…It is insane that they’re still winning, and have been one of the best teams in baseball..
Heck, even the revitalized cast-offs they’ve been working with are getting injured, and are having to be replaced…
Their consistent bullpen and seemingly endless depth has been their saving grace this season. So you definitely have to give some credit where it is due..
LuCroy has been calling some excellent games for their pitchers and replacements, and he’s helped provide a relative level of consistency for Oakland..
Obviously, though, you have to give their manager, their collective staff of pitching coaches and coordinators, and their GM a ton of credit as well..
I definitely wish the best for Oakland, and hope they continue to overcome their ridiculous rash of injuries..!!

Angels say sup.
Michael Chaney
It’s gotta be the Angels
RedRooster
So who starts the Wild Card game now? Jackson? Cahill?
hiflew
Probably James Paxton because the A’s bubble is about to burst.
tharrie0820
Time to face reality man…your team ain’t making it
hiflew
If you are talking about the Mariners, they are not my team. I have no rooting interest in any AL West team. Just a neutral observer that has noticed the A’s peaking way too early and the Mariners quietly still hanging around.
justin-turner overdrive
FWIW schedule wise the A’s and Yankees (and Rays) have to face 5 contenders and 5 sub-.500 teams. The Astros and Mariners face 4 contenders and 6 scrubs. Schedule favors Houston and Seattle. The other teams have to play extra well to hold them off.
Cam
Peaking too early?
That’s exactly the same as saying they’re too good right now.
Being good now, doesn’t forebode being bad later. Just like getting heads on a coin flip doesn’t increase the chance of a tails next.
charlie0
Fiers, assuming they make it.
AvidAstrosFan
Take it from an Astros fan….Fiers is definitely a clutch pitcher! When the stakes are high he will thrive.
julyn82001
A’s weren’t supposed to compete this year but next and they have done a super job thus far showing promising results! Regardless, Fiers is a good choice to start the wild card game against the Yankees!
Lefty Grove’s right hand
Of Course Manaea goes down! That’s just the A’s luck, as always. Uhhhh
jb19
Daniel Mengden is the As best healthy SP. all those old retreads that are pitching like Nolan Ryan are going to come back down to earth at some point. Do you really expect Mike Fiers is worthy of pitching the WC game? Please! Sean Manea should probably be the guy in the WC game assuming he’s healthy.
justin-turner overdrive
Actually, Fiers looks really good, like, head and shoulders above the rest. Cahill is good most of the time too. I don’t see them falling apart in the next 3 starts out of nowhere. Could happen, but doubtful.
Manaea shouldn’t be anywhere near that WC game. His season is probably done.
jb19
Fiers and Cahill. Edwin Jackson and Brett Anderson. This has to be historically the worst playoff rotation of all time. Fiers didn’t even make the Astros postseason roster last year. That includes McHugh being sent to the pen for the postseason… if you think these guys are all sub 3.5 ERA or sub 3.5 FIP over a course of a season you are dreaming.
goodmac7
nope, ‘07 rockies had aaron cook, jeff francis and josh fogg…
Solaris601
If Mengden can recapture his May/June form OAK may be able to get into the 2nd round, but that’s a big IF. Anyone have any insight into how and why he fell apart after being so sharp and consistent in the first half?
MikeyHammer
I like Mengden, but he’s a bit of a smoke and mirrors type. When he is on, and everybody looks off balance against him, he’s great. But, those days that he isn’t fooling guys, he has a hard time putting hitters away. Plus, gotta root for that ‘stache.
Houston We Have A Solution
I mean. Wildcard game might as well be a pen game
Toss your best relievers out for 2 innings at a time.
jb19
Not a bad idea. As pen is really good. I like the additions they’ve made.
gorav114
I know Cobb comes with some financial and future years obligation but he has pitched really well since his changeup has returned. He also didn’t have a spring training explaining his bad slow start. He’s on a reasonable deal and would be a good pitcher to trade for IMO.
geg42
The A’s should trade for Bartolo Colon. Start him and limit him to 3-4 innings. Colon will throw strikes and the coliseum limits long balls.
jdgoat
It’s going to be an awesome wild card game when the best bullpen in baseball bullpens their way into the Bronx. The only question, whose going to be “the opener”?
encorian
Hey read up, ok? Cuz most of what I AM reading really doesn’t cut to the core of the matter. There’s a reason the A’s brass decided to forego the likes of Mengden, Montas, and Bassitt as part of the big league rotation even despite how well the latter two were pitching for Oakland in early summer. Melvin and company knew that putting those three front and center in the middle of the ascention into wild card and division title contention would have been asking too much of those three. Plus, the past and very recent health issues of especially Bassitt and Mengden were taken into consideration when Melvin had to decide which were his 5 going forward when Cahill and Anderson returned from the DL.
KEEP THE YOUNG GUNS DOWN IN AAA AND LET THEM EACH WORK ON THEIR GAMES UNTIL THE TIME COMES FOR THEM. And everyone who watched the A’s from the get-go knew this would happen. Perhaps we didn’t know for sure the next two pins to fall would be Manaea and Anderson. But we knew at least one more injury was bound to happen. And credit the A’s for being prepared for this. I bet not every other single playoff contender has 3 ready and abled young starting pitching reinforcements (AND with in-season big league experience under their belts) down on the farm.
goalieguy41
Estrada may help
usafcop
The A’s have played well over their potential and exceeded expectations with a below average rotation….I knew it would be a matter of time before the Astros pulled away….now that they have their offensive fire power back they should run away with the ALW….as far as wild card the A’s got off to a good start and may hold off the Mariners but the A’s will be in over their head in the playoffs with the big 4 being much better than them though the records don’t show it….in all honesty the A’s don’t belong in the same conversation as the Red Sox…Yankees…Astros or Indians….
usafcop
As far as the pitchers available….those mentioned above are garbage….none of them matchup vs Sale…Severino….Price or any of the Astros starters
stymeedone
No, Oakland doesn’t belong, yet here you are speaking of them, in that conversation.
jdgoat
I don’t give a crap who “belongs”. At the start of October, you show me who the healthiest and hottest team is, and that’s who I’d be putting money on. It’s baseball folks, the postseason is a crapshoot. And the A’s are kind of built for the postseason anyways. They already have a top bullpen league wide which we know is huge in a playoff run. Add in their amazing defence and underrated players and there is absolutely no reason to believe they can’t make a run.
rocky7
Exactly how are the A’s BUILT for the postseason when their entire starting pitching staff is on the DL?
And, stop with the amazing defense and underrated players bullspit.
This team has been overachieving since the all star break and please don’t give us the crap that this was the design all along.
The Sox and the Yankees have been “running” all year long and don’t show any signs of stopping.
More West Coast propaganda from the cow barn in Oakland!
jdgoat
Because starting pitching is probably the least important part of a team when it comes playoff time. Especially for a team with maybe the best bullpen in baseball.
And again, it’s about whose hot at the right time. I don’t care who has been “running” up until now.
jbigz12
I’d comp the A’s to the orioles in their playoff stretch from 2012-2016. Weak starting rotation, excellent bullpen and mashers in the lineup. The orioles were awful close to the WS too when hey certainly weren’t the favorite. The A’s are obviously very young and have a chance to build on this team once we see Luzardo, puk, etc in the rotation in the future. Right now it’s going to be tough though. You still need 4-5 innings out of your pitchers come playoff time no matter how deep the pen is. And I don’t trust anyone in that rotation to be able to consistently do that. You’re not going to want to bet on Cahill v severino or verlander but remember that joe Saunders got the W over Yu darvish I believe in 2012? You never know
encorian
The A’s don’t belong in the same conversation as the Indians??! Go over your season notes and stats again, usafcop. You’re better than that.
usafcop
Indians are better than the A’s….Kluber and Carrasco are far better than anything the A’s have and that’s not to mention Clevinger and Bauer (DL)….the bullpen had been shaky without Miller for parts of the season but the lineup is steady as well….Jose Ramirez is a beast…the A’s got start and lack of competition is why they are in the WC race at all….they weren’t locks like the Red Sox….Yankees….Astros and Indians the 4 big teams in the AL….so no the A’s don’t belong in the same conversation as those 4 teams….I would say more like the Mariners and Angels are closer to the A’s talent wise….
KG25Baseball
The A’s have to at least get one of the starters that have cleared waivers. They have made it this far from where they were earlier in the season, it would suck if it ended because of these injuries and they don’t get a started
usafcop
The A’s starting rotation when healthy isn’t as good as some teams rotations that won’t even make the playoffs…so don’t give me the team is built for the playoffs….Cahill was garbage before he somewhat resurrected his career and the bullpen has pitched over expectations….they will be one and done but for some reason if they do win a one game playoff with whichever starter they throw out there….I guarantee they don’t get past round 2….they are only being mentioned in playoff talks due to the simple reason the AL doesn’t have much competition and because the they got off to a great start….so by default they may get wild card but it certainly doesn’t imply that they belong….as far as a crap shoot yes the playoffs are a crap shoot….u can throw the White Sox in the AL playoffs and the Marlins in the NL playoffs and they could end up meeting in the WS….by pure luck and timely hits of course….(see the Giants of 2010, 2012, 2014 and the Royals of 2015 for reference) recent underdogs but still won so yes anything can happen but it doesn’t mean they belong there….
thebare54
OMG someone get Shield out of Chicago he’s hit and miss like many of Oakland starters mightbe better Chicago need to lose him before Tatis jr get to the show. Not to remind us how sad we are- over that stupidtrade worst Than Cubs trading Torres to Cashman the yankee pirate.
