Injury Notes: Wright, Trout, Altuve, Judge, Bryant

By Connor Byrne | August 11, 2018 at 2:58pm CDT

In a rare piece of encouraging news for the woebegone Mets, the team announced that injured third baseman David Wright will begin a rehab assignment on Sunday, when he’ll play five innings for the club’s Class-A affiliate in St. Lucie. It’s not clear whether the 35-year-old Wright has a real chance to return this season, but if he does come back, it would be one of the greatest triumphs of the 2018 campaign. After all, a laundry list of upper body injuries limited Wright to just 75 appearances from 2015-16 and have completely kept him out of MLB action over the past couple years. The seven-time All-Star hasn’t appeared in a major league game since May 27, 2016, or a minor league contest since Aug. 26, 2017.

Catching up on other notable injury news from around the majors…

  • The Angels placed center fielder Mike Trout on the 10-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to Aug. 6, with right wrist inflammation, Maria Guardado of MLB.com was among those to report. Trout’s balky wrist has kept him out of action since Aug. 1, perhaps derailing the perennial MVP candidate’s chances of taking home his third such award in 2018.
  • Speaking of AL MVPs, last year’s winner, Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, has been out since July 26 with right knee soreness. Unfortunately, Altuve will remain on the shelf at least through the Astros’ current homestand, which ends Aug. 15, per Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle. The Astros’ middle infield did get some good news Friday when shortstop Carlos Correa returned from a lower back injury that kept him on ice for six weeks.
  • Continuing with the theme of injured AL superstars, Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge is getting “better and better every day,” manager Aaron Boone informed George A. King III of the New York Post and other reporters Friday. Boone added he’s “optimistic” that Judge, who has been unavailable since July 26 with a chip fracture in his right wrist, will progress to picking up a bat “in the next couple of days.” New York has struggled to replace the great Judge, evidenced by its consistent use of the underwhelming Shane Robinson in the outfield during the slugger’s absence.
  • Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, out since July 26 with left shoulder inflammation, told Patrick Mooney of The Athletic and other reporters Saturday that he “absolutely” expects to return in 2018. In order to preserve his body, Bryant noted that he “plans to alter his gameday routine,” writes Mooney, who adds that the 26-year-old would like to play until he’s 40.

Prince Fielder still hasn’t “retired.” Hasn’t played in years because MLB won’t allow him due to the severity of his injury, still collects a paycheck though and kills the Rangers Salary Cap

It’s not MLB who wouldn’t allow Fielder to play it’s the actual DOCTORS. Fielder playing, would be a danger to himself.

Was not by choice. Go read the comments in the “Rangers release Fielder” thread: “Not 1 doctor would medically clear him to play, despite his desire.” Shame on you for trying to frame your argument in a way that makes Fielder look like he did something wrong. (?) He was literally tearing up at the conference.

Mutt, “hey Jeff I don’t remember. How much insurance are we collecting for Wright? What do we have to do so we make believe we are supporting him and most importantly scamming as many fans as we can?”

Jeff (sweating under his toupe), “I dont know dad. I think we should send him
To A ball to prove that we want him to return.” Mutt replies, “let’s make sure that the manager buries him down there. Overplay him. Let the other team know we want them bunting on him. We can’t have Wright screw up our Dodger memorabilia fun money.”

          “Ok dad”.

and he WILL NOT come back so they are seeing if he has any

Mark Teixeira has stated that Bird’s problem is that he can not turn on a fastball! I am tired of Boone, Cash, and the front office telling us Bird is almost there! In the meantime, they screw over Tyler Austin by replacing him with Bird who was not getting it done in the minors. Nothing like ruining a player’s confidence!

I wrote in another article they should have gotten Bour from the Marlins at the deadline, they could of sent Bird to AAA if need be. They’re bottom in production from the first base position. This winter they not only need to add starting pitching, but need to adress Catching and first. One bold move they could of made at the deadline was to trade Sanchez, Bird+ prospects if needed, for Realmuto and Bour.

Please no Harper. He’s gonna want way too much money. Bote is great. I think they’ll find him playing time. Zo is likely gone after this year. But he should stay on as the hitting coach. After 2019.

Almora needs to be in CF. Bote can play just about anywhere. Which is one of the biggest strengths of the Cubs. Everyone on their team can play more than one position.
Schwarber needs to be in left most of the time. He’s better than most talking heads says he is. He’s leading baseball in outfield assists. He has 8 maybe 9 this year. That’s a asset that the outfield needs to have. Heyward has a great arm as well.
