Reds Select Tim Federowicz, Gabby Guerrero

By Jeff Todd | September 4, 2018 at 11:27am CDT

The Reds announced today that they have selected the contracts of catcher Tim Federowicz and outfielder Gabby Guerrero. To create 40-man space, the organization recalled righty Keury Mella and placed him on the 60-day DL.

That pair of newcomers to the MLB roster will be joined by righty Tyler Mahle. The well-regarded young hurler has already spent most of the season in the majors, of course.

Federowicz joined the Reds earlier this year on a minors pact after he was cut loose from the Astros. The 31-year-old will now have seen time with five MLB clubs over parts of seven seasons. Though he hasn’t hit all that well thus far at the Triple-A level in the Cincinnati organization, and is a marginal hitter in his limited experience at the game’s highest level, Federowicz will provide some welcome catching depth down the stretch. He’ll be eligible for arbitration at season’s end, though it stands to reason that he’ll be allowed to test the open market.

As for Guerrero, he originally came to the Cincinnati organization on a waiver claim, then was non-tendered and re-signed in the winter of 2016. Today’s news means that he’ll beat his cousin, elite Blue Jays prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr., to the big leagues. Of course, Gabby is now 24 years of age, so he had more than a five-year head start. He earned his way up after a solid year in the upper minors, during which he slashed .293/.328/.474 with 19 home runs in 539 plate appearances.

What is your basis on the claim, @tv?

Astick it’s true, why do you think the Reds moved Chris Buckley out of director of professional scouting and the minor league director of international scouting? That’s because Buckley was not developing pitchers and the director of amateur scouting wasn’t scouting and drafting players from Cuba! Look at the bad trades for pitching under Jocketty and Williams! Truthfully they need a better GM! Even Votto is fed up of the 3 years rebuilding and they haven’t done a darn thing address the starting pitching issue! Just this past weekend they traded Preston Tucker back to the Braves for cash! They didn’t even give him a consideration for next year! That tells you Castellini needs to reorganize the front office!

You are using up exclamation points faster than they can be manufactured and pixilized. But they don’t make your comments any better.

He’s referring to Dick Williams, although it is Castellini who makes the decisions. Despite themselves, they ARE only 2 good starters away from a contender

Need to play Phil Ervin every day. He’s the best power/speed guy on the team. Will Billy steal another base this year? He’s 0-3 over the past three weeks. So much for surpassing last year’s total (59). And what happened to Joey’s power. He had that one good run when he hit, like what, 5 or 6 over and 10 game span? Been pretty quiet ever since. Reds have hitters, and maybe more on the way (Trammel?). We need starting pitchers, and not just one or two. We need at least four. Finally, are we still paying Homer Bailey to stink up the joint every fifth day?

I like Ervin, and he should play everyday for the rest of the season. He is not going to be a starter next season, not unless the Reds run into injuries. 2019 will be interesting to see where they put Senzel, my guess is RF. Meaning Depth chart for the outfield would be Winker, Senzel, Schebler, Hamilton, then Ervin. I’d be ok if they were to trade Hamilton, but I don’t think they are going to get much of a return, or he’d already have been traded.
