Steven Wright Undergoes Knee Surgery

By Jeff Todd | November 12, 2018 at 7:59pm CDT

The Red Sox announced today that right-hander Steven Wright has undergone surgery on his left knee. Specifically, he received an arthroscopy and debridement on the joint.

At this point, a timeline isn’t known. The club says that Wright “will continue to rehab and prepare for a return to pitching in the 2019 season.”

It’s not particularly surprising to hear of the procedure, as Wright has long dealt with issues in that joint. A prior surgery knocked him out for almost all of the 2017 season. After making it back and becoming a productive member of the staff again in 2018, Wright hit the DL late in the season when he began dealing with pain and inflammation.

At the time that his recent issues arose, Wright indicated that the belief was he was suffering from “loose bodies” in the knee. If that’s all that was at issue, perhaps there’s reason to hope that there’ll be plenty of time for Wright to work back to full health before Spring Training.

The Boston organization will certainly hope the prognosis is promising. Wright projects to earn only $1.4MM in arbitration in 2019, with one more season of control still to come thereafter, making him an affordable asset. And he’s fresh off of a season in which he showed well in a multi-inning swingman role. Over four starts and 16 relief appearances, Wright worked to a 2.68 ERA with 42 strikeouts and 26 walks over 53 2/3 frames. Though his K/BB numbers fail to impress, the knuckler was seemingly legitimately tough to square up, as Statcast figures suggest (.288 wOBA, .306 xwOBA, 26.8 hard-hit rate).

Steven Wright is more banged up than Evel Knievel. How is that possible?

I think the injuries are related. He hurt is shoulder, so he tried to compensate by putting more torque on his knee, ending up doing more damage to his knee than his shoulder. I don’t have his medical chart to back it up, but all pitcher injuries affect their whole body because they need to use their whole body in synchronization to pitch effectively

They simply cleaned up the knee. That said this is now his third procedure. Arthritis normally sets in but medical science is amazing and everyone is different. Fortunately he’s not a power pitcher and planting his front leg should be easier than most. Hopefully he can come back because regardless of how inning eaters supposedly are less valuable, he saves others on the staff from burning extra innings and he is very valuable to Boston if healthy

He is far more valuable then an innings eater. He is cheap and when effective really screws up the others teams hitters timing. He can be real tough to hit when he isn’t injured. Let’s hope this surgery takes.

Totally agree. My comment I guess under appreciated his value which Red Sox fans have known since he arrived from Cleveland for I believe Lars Anderson. With Tim Wakefield before him, how did they miss getting Dickey in between?

Heard he’s gonna meet up with Jose Reyes, Roberto Osuna, and Josh Brown in the off-season to recover.

Crawl back in your hole KC. It never came out the true extent of what happened (at least to my knowledge) and the length of the suspension suggests it was not on the same level as the others. No form of abuse is ok but to lump everyone together is also not fair.

How is it not fair? Whether he beat her or punched her or slapped her it still makes him a piece of crap. Why don’t you crawl into your hole?

Because unlike the other ball players, Wright didn’t beat, slap, or punch someone in the face. According to the article MLB Trade Rumors posted at the time, the situation was a ‘verbal argument’, and he was not accused of physical harm.

He lives in Tennessee, which is a “Must Arrest” state you dummy! The police are required to arrest the primary aggressor which happens to be the male over 95% of the time. He never touched his wife and the charges were eventually dropped after an investigation,

That’s like saying well don’t compare him to other murderers because others used assault rifles and he only used a hammer. Not fair to them

So what you’re saying is punching someone is the equivalent of arguing with them. Got it.
