Diamondbacks Sign Matt Szczur

By Jeff Todd | December 14, 2018 at 10:30pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have signed a minors deal with outfielder Matt Szczur, per an announcement from the club’s top affiliate. Szczur has been assigned to the Reno Aces to begin his tenure with the Arizona organization, but he’ll have a shot to earn a big league job in camp next spring.

Szczur, 29, has seen at least some time in each of the past five MLB campaigns, though he has totaled only about a full season’s worth of plate appearances in the aggregate. With a .231/.312/.355 career batting line, he’ll need to show quite a lot in Spring Training to crack the D-Backs’ roster. The former fifth-round pick is capable of playing all three outfield positions, increasing his versatility, but would be limited to the short side of a hypothetical platoon as he hits from the right side of the plate.

If he is able to make it back to the majors, Szczur will earn at a $950K rate, per Jon Heyman of Fancred (via Twitter). He’ll also have a pair of opt-out opportunities to force the hand of the Snakes or, perhaps, to strike out looking for work elsewhere.

Incorrect. It’s mainly local fans who are transplants. LA & SF have very little to do with it, other than being sh*thole cities that many of their residents are moving away from.

This aint it man. Sorry you lost the clippers and now chargers….keep it up and maybe the padres will be next! Theres a reason most go to la and sf because they are popular! Cant say the same about sd, been there boring!

        • SanDiegoAgaintsTheWorld

One thing is to make fun of SD sports teams, but to call San Diego boring? You’re just a bias moron. That’s why the whole city is filled with transplants. And you’re downtown is BORING. I only go to that overrated third world hellhole when I’m forced to.

You’re a dumbass LA is a place people leave their lame hometowns to come live. They act like they hate it but they never leave so we’re stuck with our transplant scum just like any big city

Being at 16th when they were contending most of the season is telling.

So telling… they had better attendance than two playoff teams, Cleveland & Oakland. Nearly identical attendance as two teams who were both in the playoff hunt, Seattle & Philadelphia. And light years ahead of both Tampa & Pittsburgh, two more teams who were in the playoff hunt.

        • EndinStealth

Ok so? At the end of the day they were 16th. Teams not in the playoff hunt showed up better. BTW you couldn’t pick two worse examples. People in Florida do not support baseball. Philly hasn’t competed in years before 18. The Dbacks competed in two consecutive seasons. They should have been top 10 minimum.

And then he would laugh that laugh of his.

Remember when he said, “Hey…Marla Collins isn’t wearing any pants today.” He realized what he said and then lost it the rest of the inning. (Marla, the ball girl, was donning her short shorts for the first warm day of the year.)

I remember Cubs fans thinking he was gonna be a perennial 5 win player in center simply because of his speed.

    Obviously that wasn’t the case.

Didn’t he donate bone marrow to someone he didn’t even know? I feel like I remember a feel good story about him.

Yes! He donated to a baby girl in Ukraine who is now a happy, healthy little girl. He’s a great kid who deserves a real shot! Speedy and intelligent outfielder! He needs regular at bats to develop confidence at the plate. SO happy that the D-Backs recognized his talents!!
