Matt Chapman Undergoes Shoulder Surgery

By Jeff Todd | December 14, 2018 at 7:24pm CDT

The Athletics announced today that third baseman Matt Chapman has undergone surgery on his left shoulder. Specifically, a “distal clavicle resection” was performed, per the club announcement.

Thankfully, the outlook isn’t as scary as that technical description. Chapman is said to be only six weeks away from resuming swinging, so long as all goes according to plan. He’s also recovering from a mid-October thumb procedure but seems on track to return from that as well.

Chapman’s thumb problem had arisen during the season, while the shoulder issue only came to light while he was doing winter workouts. In any event, all told, it seems A’s can breathe easy with regard to the 25-year-old star, who’ll be looking to follow up on an immense 2018 season in which he was one of the most valuable players in the American League.

Your actions speak louder than words. You missed the point. MLB is unifying. yet u keep targeting me for no reason other than posting frequently or first. No doubt in if u get banned, you make more accs. You’re toxic user. More than anything I ever did. I like reading threads with many comments. People like u try to limit them cuz self proclaimed sense of entitlement. Everyone has right to post as many times as they want to their hearts content, express their opinion if they’re not trolling and used to be, were able to do that w/o getting “bullied”

Posting first? Give me a break. Posting freq. Wow. If site doesn’t notify me, they obviously have no problem with it. Stop going off-topic all the time to go after me man. If you’ve had accs banned, you’re obviously in the wrong. And I have a feeling you have.

Also known as the Mumford procedure. The surgeon shaves off or even removes the end of clavicle (collarbone). Relieves pressure on AC joint. More than half of humans have a ‘hook’ on end of clavicle into AC joint. Clears more room in the shoulder. Chapman should be fine.

.961 OPS in the second half – if he’s a 1.000 OPS guy all year plus all universe defense, does that = better than Trout?

I really like Chapman and think he has a great future but calling him Trout like is silly however if he can back it up again he can climb the ranks of best players in baseball. He is really good and there is no team in baseball that would not want Chapman. The player in baseball that is closes to Trout would be Betts and he is a distant second.

Agreed but I think Chapman’s plus plus defense & strong arm almost makes it a wash compared to Trout’s plus defense & adequate arm. I could be wrong but I think Trout’s throwing arm is the one thing about his game that’s average-ish.

Trout heard that and decided to make it a focus area this offseason. So… Expect him to come out next year sporting a Willie Mays/Clemente/Bo Jackson arm next year. MMVVP. (Most most valuable valuable player, new award created to describe Trout)

Agreed. I don’t care who you’re talking about. The next “better than Trout” comparison should and will be more than likely happening 30-40 years from now. That’s no disrespect to Chapman, it’s just that Trout is probably the best player to ever play the game, and if not best, he’s undoubtably top five.

You must be forgetting Barry Bonds. That guy was out of this world.

        • Bruin1012

Really hard to know how to rate Bonds he was a great player no doubt about this and I think he was a hall of famer even before the steroids thing but calling him one top five debatable. He never went through the normal aging curve that players do so his 37 to 42 ages were crazy good. Hell he was a three war player when he was pushed out. I think he was great but I also believe the steroids allowed to remain a great player well past normal decline years. Sadly we will never really know how much the steroids helped him in his later years but the evidence says quite a bit.

Southern California, Cal State Fullerton Titans!
Watched him play for three seasons and it was obvious he would be an MLB All Star. Pro scouts were at about every game, how 24 teams do not pick him before the A’s did at the 25 selection? The Angels play literally five miles down the road. The Dodgers play about thirty miles away. Both teams chose other players in the first round. Quality guy, speedy recovery. Best of luck in 2019. Go Titans!

Good thing Chapman has taken care of the issue early, rather than waiting the injury out too long and doing the surgery during Spring Training,as sometimes players tend to do.BTW,it would be nice if commentators stuck to the subject matter in the post, instead of insulting and attacking each other. The first twenty or so comments had nothing to do with Chapman’s surgery. It’s getting ridiculously silly and tiresome, folks.

The only stat that had him a defensive gem is Dwar. Yet he almost lead all 3b in errors. He had close to if not the most chances and assists. Do those relate to DWar?
Otherwise i don’t get it. He can pick it, ive seen that. 3b needs to hit and ive seen that. With so many errors and ranked midway per fielding %, whats so special about his play that elevates him?

DRS and UZR, basically he saved 29 Runs that should have been hits more than anyone in baseball. He also had Range that is closer attributed to Outfielders so yeah he is a beast.

If you want to see Matt Chapman elite defense, watch his catch of Josh Reddick that was actually the Left Fielders catch in foul territory, or his master exhibition against Solarte, or tossing out Dee Gordon on a bunt.

Maybe you should actually just use google then you will see what is so special about Matt Chapman.
