NL East Notes: Pollock, Camargo, Swanson, Maldonado, Realmuto, deGrom

By Mark Polishuk | December 12, 2018 at 9:52am CDT

The Braves have discussed offering a contract to free agent A.J. Pollock, The Athletic’s David O’Brien writes (subscription required).  Atlanta is known to be casting a wide net for outfield help so it isn’t any surprise that Pollock is one of the team’s many options under consideration.  The 31-year-old would, however, be one of the costlier names available, both in terms of money — Pollock is reportedly looking for an $80MM deal — and in draft compensation, as Pollock rejected a qualifying offer from the Diamondbacks.  The Braves would have to give up their third-highest selection in the 2019 draft for signing Pollock, though GM Alex Anthopoulos indicated that wouldn’t be an obstacle.  Pollock has spent the vast majority of his career as a center fielder but would likely shift to a corner position in Atlanta given Ender Inciarte’s outstanding glovework, though Inciarte has himself been the subject of some trade speculation.

More from Atlanta and other teams in the NL East…

  • The Braves have one of the game’s deeper farm system, though they have also received interest in several players on their Major League roster.  Johan Camargo and Dansby Swanson are two players other teams have called about, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman writes, and a follow-up tweet from Bowman includes the detail that teams asking about Ozzie Albies “have found the discussion has shifted toward Swanson.”  Since breaking in with an impressive rookie season in 2016, Swanson has posted below-average numbers at the plate, hitting just .235/.308/.359 over 1084 PA.  It seems logical that Albies has more value than Swanson at this point, though it’s worth noting that Swanson is still just 24 and has only four pro seasons under his belt. To that end, Bowman writes that “some within the Braves organization remain hesitant to move Swanson.”  As for Camargo, he seems like another player unlikely to be pried away from the Braves without a hefty return, as Camargo offers five seasons of team control and a lot of multi-positional versatility.
  • The Mets had a meeting with Martin Maldonado and his camp yesterday, Fancred Sports’ Jon Heyman tweets.  Maldonado was originally mentioned as a Mets target earlier this winter, and the club could now be circling back towards a more defensive-oriented answer at catcher rather than continue making a big push for J.T. Realmuto.  As per Heyman, the Mets “are [starting] to lose a bit of confidence in Realmuto talks” with the Marlins.  In another tweet from earlier in the evening, Heyman cited the Mets as seemingly “the most aggressive team” in pursuit of Realmuto, with the Braves and Yankees in the next tier down, and the Yankees perhaps in the mix only for the purposes of flipping Realmuto to another club.
  • In other Mets news, the team spoke with Jacob deGrom’s camp yesterday, James Wagner of the New York Times reports (Twitter link).  SNY.tv’s Andy Martino described the meeting as “very preliminary” in nature, and not exactly proper “extension talks” just yet.  As Wagner notes, Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen is staying out of any extension negotiations with deGrom due to Van Wagenen’s former role as deGrom’s agent, so it will be particularly interesting to see how things unfold between the two sides.  DeGrom has two years of arbitration eligibility remaining before he hits free agency, so while there isn’t any immediate rush for a long-term deal, the Mets might prefer to lock up one ace before potentially looking to deal another in Noah Syndergaard.

Love Rosario but I doubt the Twinkies move him. I’d like Pollock but only at 4/60 which he’ll never sign for. Especially after Cutch got 3/50.

Rosario is an older version of Camargo with worse defense. Why would we waste assets trading for him?

Camargo’s never played in the outfield, how do you know what his defense would be? Nearly identical WAR last year, has multiple years of 20+ homers, and is still cheap. Why wouldn’t you want him?

It’s really hard to give up on Swanson right now. Still really young and keeps showing small flashes of being a good ball player. I think braves fans like me are really holding on to that hope that he turns into the player he was expected to be.

Swanson showed more power this year and was starting to turn the corner on offense before his injury. His great defense and hustle are enough to give him more leash to see if he can take the next step.

I really hope they don’t sign Pollock. Braves are better off with Camargo in the OF until Pache or Waters are ready. Make a splash and sign Harper if they are determined to spend money in free agency.

Camargo hasn’t played the OF in the big leagues at all, has he? I’m sure he’ll get a lot of work in Spring Training, but I’d not put him out there every day, especially when his role will be to spell all four IF as well.

The Braves still need a third regular OF. I hate they lost out on Cutch, but glad they didn’t spend stupid money for him, too.

Beep beep, back the truck up (hat tip: Tim Taylor) – you want them to sign Bryce Harper, but don’t want them to sign AJ Pollock??? I don’t want them to sign either, but at least Pollock has the excuse of being injured. Harper would be a shot in the arm, but if he gets 350-400M, that will have so many more financial ramifications than the 80M that Pollock is asking for.

I’m not necessarily advocating for signing him; however, Harper would probably have an opt-out within 4 or 5 years (that he’d likely exercise). That would coincide with our championship window. Pollock, or any of the other FA outfielder available, would not measurably make the team “better.”

If they are going to spend money on free agents and compete with the big boys (Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, etc) for a championship, then they are going to need more upside than the Pollock, Brantley, Cutch and Markakis types. Any of those guys seems like the path to another first round playoff exit.

Pollock has only been a slightly above average hitter after coming back from injury in 2017. This is in what should be considered his prime. I would not throw 80 mil at him for his age 31-35 seasons for sure. Inevitably the defense is going to degrade and if his offense dips just a little bit you’ve got an overpaid player. The team that gives Pollock 80 MM is going to be sad.

Exactly. He would be redundant and the Mets don’t exactly have money to burn. They would do far better investing in at least 2 more BP arms, starting pitcher, and another outfielder. It’ll be interesting if ownership even re-investing the giant insurance checks of Wright and Cespedes. Likely it’ll be the same ‘ol small market Mets.

I don’t understand why the Mets are eager to trade Syndergaard. When a team wants to contend they always look to upgrade the rotation. Seems counterproductive. Realmuto is a very good catcher but its not like he is the second coming of Piazza. The top 2 punch of Jacob and Noah with a FA catcher will net more wins than Jacob and Realmuto

I tend to agree but do admit to going back and forth on the idea. But I think it’s mainly cuz the catcher position destroyed their lineup last year. Not the only thing but it was a huge season long issue.

It seems that the Yankees are moving on from Syndergaard. If the Mets are going to do this for Realmuto now, it’s going to likely be either Conforto or Nimmo, along with Rosario and d’Arnaud and maybe a couple of mid/low level prospects.

Agreed…though it would be a HUGE mistake for the Mets. Realmuto is the top catcher in the game between age, ability, and cost control. That said…trading a TOR guy for 2 years of a position that pays 120-130 games a year is a horrible tradeoff. Losing Conforto/Nimmo opens up a hole in the lineup AND they are cost controlled, which for the small market mets is a big deal. The only reason I’d be okay with signing Maladono is that it’d end this Realmuto junk. I vastly prefer Ramos (due to his plus bat and shorter contract), but Grandal could be solid too…but the years he’ll eventually get and lack of playoff productivity both worry me. Plaw and Travis aren’t horrible options, they just are below average at a position where most of the league is below average to average.

MarlinsFanBase you’re just as clueless as your teams ownership. Realmuto is only worth Rosario or Nimmo. If the Marlins don’t like that offer, ah well, enjoy being the cellar dwellers for the next decade. No one and I mean NO ONE is going to meet the Marlins ridiculous demands. Just listen to what the Reds are offering, Trammell & Barnhart…………LMAO. Man, it’s great being a Mets fan again because we are finally being run by someone who has commonsense and a vision that will have the Mets competing for years to come. Marlins are the joke of the NL East and will be for the foreseeable future.

Braves should go all in – offer Swanson and a controllable starter ( or 2 ) to boston for Porcello and Bogarts. Bostons offense can handle losing Bogarts and they get long term ss – Brave get solid pitcher and bigtime ss for 1yr ( plus the draft picks from when they turn down QO). Lineup Acuna,Bogarts, Donaldson, Freeman would be legit contender.

In my eyes the Braves have three needs. OF,Bullpen and Veteran SP.

    1. Ender is what you need in CF. Has a good bat but mostly importantly has the glove.

    2. Camargo Is a perfect trade chip. But I don’t want him to get traded. He can play anywhere in the IF. And I think he is getting better. I have him a slight edge over Dansby

    3. Swanson. I have wanted to believe in him since we traded for him. He was lighting in a bottle when called up. I love his hussle. He is a top 10 SS with his glove. But I also believe that Camargo could be as well.

    4. Bullpen. We have all these young Arms. Can one of them not be converted to a Closer. I feel you tie up to much in a closet that it’s gonna be great the first few years. But the back end of that deal will hurt…. there is only a few closers that is worth their contract. But you’ll pay for him.

    5. I’d love to get Zach Greinke he would be our #1. And take pressure off of the young arms, but if we can’t get him. I think a good inning eater vet SP to guide these young arms is a must.

Ender does NOT have the bat. Sure, 2-3 years ago were very different from 2018. If his OBP isn’t at least .350 – he needs replacing offensively. Because of that, he has no spot in the batting order because he cannot be 1-2 and then becomes a 7-8, which is fine if you’re taking that into account.

We need to look at getting Jose Leclerc from TEX = who needs some young controllable SPs. I wonder if Allard or Gohara + prospects would get it done. We need an established closer for use now – we cannot take the time to develop a closer from a would-be starter, though I think we do have the depth to be able to do that in a few years from now. I don’t see ATL committing 4+ years to an established closer.

Why are the Braves always content with a mediocre bullpen? It’s appalling and I want to be optimistic but they continue to ignore it and instead want to SIGN an OFer. It’s been over 25 years (92’ WS) and they still haven’t learned their lesson. You can’t just scrape by in the bullpen and expect to win a WS, especially in this day and age. Why can’t the Braves take a page out of Colorado or Milwaukee’s book? Hell, the Brewers went to the NLCS with a couple of journeyman starters because of their dominant bullpen and offense. The Braves have arguably better starters than both those teams. I want to be optimistic here, but if they do so-so moves in that area, I won’t expect anything more then another NLDS exit, if they even make it. Apparently some fellow fans comments, and their proposals, suggest they’re fine with just winning the NLEast and just making the playoffs. The goal should be to win a WS, btw.

Need for need (maybe a touch less now that Tigers signed Mercer) Both high ceiling coming off down years… discrepancy in control likely limiting factor.

Since Pollack became a full time MLB player he’s averaged 101 games played over 6 seasons. In what world is that worth an 80 million dollar contract? I can’t see a player who’s that injury prone getting that kind if money.

I would love to see Swanson go — he’s not very good — but I would hate to see them sign Pollock, because he’s an always-injured bum.

Impossible to respond to such a dumb question. I assume you think Swanson is good and Pollock is always healthy.

Pollock is who we wanted instead of Ender..freak injuries..I don’t see a problem..Dansby’s D and leadership abilities negate any trade of him..to break up any of the core would be incredibly stupid, especially given Ender’s first half slide, Ozzie’s second half plummet, and Camargone’s lucky babip thanks to his slap hitting..Dansby sets and runs the defense..hard for the Goat to do when he can’t be bothered to learn English eh?

    ATL- Haniger, Gray
    NYY- Camargo, Wright, Wilson
    SEA- Andujar, Riley, Frazier

ATL gets haniger and Gray(who could pitch a lot better in ATL rather than NYY giving up Camargo, Wright, WIlson, Riley

NYY gets replacement of Andujar who plays better D and hit 270 w 22 HRs along with two pitchers very close to MLB (Wright is one of the best prospects)

SEA gets Riley(highly regarded) and Andujar(proven) and mid prospect and frazier for haniger

Feel free to comment about light/heavy loads for one team bc this was a lot

Then sign a big time reliever (ATL)

So, if Atlanta gives up Camargo AND Riley, who’s going to be our 3rd baseman after next year since Donaldson is only a 1-year rental? Plus, why would Seattle want 2 third base options?

I have a block buster trade that would free up money for the Yankees to sign Machado and Harper it’s a 4 team trade

    Yankees would get
    Rp Kirby Yates
    Rp arodys Vizcaino
    3b johan Camargo
Then Yankees sign Harper , Machado , lp Miller , 1b Adams

    Padres get
    Of mike Stanton
    Lp sam Freeman
    Rp Julio Tehran
    Of ender Inciate
    3b Miguel Andujar

    D backs get
    Rp Betances
    Rp Jonathan Loasiga
    1b Greg bird
    Rp Bryce Wilson
    Of Adam Duval
    Of Hunter renfroe

    Braves get
    Rp Sonny Gray
    Of Clint Frazier
    C Austin Hedges
    Of will Myers
    Rp Zack Greinke
    Rp Archie Bradley
    Of Micheal Gettys
And dbacks pay 30 million of Greinke contract

    SS-*Tulo/Swanson
    2B-Ozzie

Swanson is good for def, leadership, hustle, but needs to swing for better avg.
