Often, when reports emerge that a particular player is about to be traded, it isn’t long thereafter that the landing spot is reported. Today, there’s indication that the Yankees are closing in on a deal involving righty Sonny Gray, but it’s still not yet clear where he could be heading. That leaves an opening to do a quick poll to get the final predictions of MLBTR’s readers.
Gray, 29, could fit with quite a few organizations, even after a less-than-inspiring 2018 campaign. He’s an accomplished hurler who is slated to earn a rather reasonable $7.5MM for the coming season — a manageable rate of pay even if he’s not able to get back to producing high-end results.
With Gray having been marketed so heavily all winter long, the list of interested teams is by now well-known, though surely others could yet also be involved. In my chat today, I was asked about the possibility of him landing with at least half of the teams in baseball. Rather than trying to pick a narrower list for this poll, then, I’m throwing them all out there for you to sort through.
Where’ll Gray end up? (Link for app users; response order randomized.)
These epic storylines this off season will come to a conclusion in theaters near you !!
JT Roflmfao. I dont think that’s how to spell the last name.
JT Roflmfao. – Close enough.
Don’t forget the Realmuto post credit scenes
Omg that is one I missed lmao
Jeter is still trying to think of a way to gift Realmuto to the Yankees anyway. Maybe Sonny Gray and Wade gets it done? Whadda you say, Jeets?
Probably the easiest poll to answer ever. The leader in the clubhouse for any “Who will trade for Player X” question is always Jerry DiPoto. He’s got a bunch of new prospects burning a hole in his pocket and also a giant ballpark and forgiving fanbase that should suit Sonny to a tee. Mark it down.
lmao you make a great point
You forgot the Rockies on the poll. I only ask because I figured the Yankees wanted to add a couple more ex-Rockies.
Was about to say the same thing because I ‘considered’ voting for them.
Dang. I specifically had the Rockies in my head to write down and double checked the number. Must have somehow deleted them before publishing. I’ll add ’em back in.
EDIT: I tried. Not sure if it’s working, though. My bad.
yep, it worked
Well there were 29 there, but one was “he won’t be traded” so that’s what probably messed up your count.
Your fix worked. No worries.
It is still the most ambitious polls ever considering all 30 teams were represented.
Preller has a #1 farm to work with, that he wants to maintain. Gives you best of both worlds —while upgrading the rotation.
Dark Horse teams for Gray: Reds, Braves and Maybe A’s.
Pitches Love Velocity
Subtracting from the farm makes 0 sense for 1 year of gray.
Some combination of Mitchell Pirela Kennedy Perdomo Diaz Torrens make more sense to deal for gray. Kennedy Perdomo and giving the Yankees Luis Torrens back helps both teams. Yankees get a SP, RP, and catching prospect with multiple years of control. All of whom are under 26.
But Kennedy Perdomo and Diaz also make sense as cheap pitching options who could benefit from a change of scenery.
“Subtracting from the farm makes 0 sense for 1 year of gray.”
Makes perfect sense
Feel Pads’ prospects it takes to acquire Kluber, would still leaves the Pads system #1. They’re that good. (Prospect wise)
Therefore, Gray Pads’ prospects, hardly scratches the Padres system. PS You can still flip him. It’s simply good business, can’t imagine a better team,
I think Gray-to-Pads marriage is bound to happen
Yankees are going to keep Gray and have him only pitch home games.
Wouldnt be against a new position introduced:
“Designated Away Pitcher.”
Like Designated Hitter, coming to the NL.
You’re a joke. But I’m sure you won’t respond. Geez, bring back westcoastryan.
The Pads already have the best farm in baseball. Sure they could flip him or Gray can fall flat on his face and destroy what little value he has left.
I don’t see why the Pads have any reason to take on the risk.
Farm can always be added to
Why would Yankees want Mitchell back?
You won’t get any top 5
Or a top 10
Gray, Holder, and Kahnle for Allen and Espinosa.
Lol you must be a Yankee fan.
Dont the Yankees have a full 40 man at the moment? Before they can make the Ottovino signing official, they need to make a move.
When gray is flipped that solves that problem
Sources say it’s the Rockies.
Why won’t you let me pick the Rockies Goddamnit?
Sad thing is that we will still be talking about this next week.
Please end this!
How is this poll hurting you? Grow up and get some ointment.
I think they meant the whole Gray trade thing, not the polls.
Running into poles can be dangerous!
Only 6 or 7 teams are known to show interest, but lets put all 29 other teams in there? Lmfao. It won’t be the Reds. (one of the 6-7) We’re done shopping for complimentary pieces like Gray, and looking to get Kluber and Keuchel.
Probably Padres as they have basically done nothing this off-season.
Gray to the mariners for fila
a vintage fila track suit is a pretty good haul for Gray. who gets to wear it?
Wouldnt mind seeing Gray and Andujar sent to the Padres for Gore, and a middle infield prospect, plus some Int.signing money
Who plays 3B for the Yanks after that?
Maybe then they turn tgeir attention to Machado. If the best hes getting is 25m/year then they dont really have to up it by much sense he already wants to wear pinstripes.
I know that im not real happy tgat my team isnt calling and offering something if all it takes is 25m to get his attention.
The same person that would have played 3B for the Yanks if they didn’t trade Andujar. He’ll be a DH full-time before the season is over.
Pitches Love Velocity
Pass. Andujar cant play 3B. Rather not toss Pedro Alvarez 2.0 out there at 3B. If padres had an opening at 1st possibly. But they don’t.
You know, your probably right….no room at the Padres inn at 1st base with your $20 Million dollar .253 hitter there……how’s that workin for you cause you got him for the next 7 years!
Andujar can outhit him with both of his shoes ties together…..in a league where defense is a lost art…..funny you value defense….you need to stay on your meds if you even think a comparison to Hosmer or Alvarez is even close!
He plays in the al east
He won’t hit those numbers in the nl west
Get a life dude
Loser Junior Circuit dh fan
I would love to have Gray and Andujar both. But Gore is NOT an option.
If we send Gore they’ll also semd us a either a mid-prospect or possibly a BP arm that we can flip. Plus, if Andujar doesnt pan defesively within the next two years we can flip at a dead line for someone needing a bat. His bat will only prosper at Petco. And I honestly think he’ll find a level of comfort in San Diego that will help him relax defensively. Same with Gray. Hes a west coast kid.
Andujar could do no worse than Myers. Plus explosive bat. Gray teaming up with Balsley in a hitters park and no DH will only help turn his game back to form.
The time of day and year really determines the type of park Petco is. Id love to see more day games. Ball flys alittle bit better. Also helps the pitchers with breaking pitches.
…sorry, meant pitchers park.
Gore isn’t getting traded and if Andujar doesn’t pan out defensively (which he won’t), his trade value won’t be nearly as high as it is right now. Your trade proposal is bad and you should feel bad.
If the return is good enough then yes he will go. The yankees want him pretty bad since they got rid of Justice Sheffield. Also you suck. You should apologize to your father for failing him and causing ypur parents divorce.
Preller will trade all the Padres’ other pitching prospects before he trades Gore. I don’t blame the Yankees for wanting him.
You’re like Rapunzel. Only instead of letting down your hair, you let down everyone in your life.
I hate that that was a good burn. But preller himself said that even Tatis could be moved if they offered him the kitchen. The padres have three of tge top 10 LHP prospects. Trade one for two if not 3 MLB ready players sounds pretty good. Especially when you look at Grays numbers on the west coast and away from yank. Hes not a 4.50 pitcher like you say he is.
You don’t trade the best of those LHP prospects. You keep that one. You especially don’t trade him for a one-year rental who had a 4.90 ERA last year.
You’re pretty passionate about something that I wrote when I was stoned. But here’s the gist of it we have three Gosling’s they have two to three geese that they would get rid of for a Gosselin. Our three goslings are the same we don’t know which type of geese they will grow up to be. The people who have the geese that want our Gosling have just lost the latest show to their rival Farm. If they want a particular Gosling of ours and they want to give us three geese that are ready to show, or worst case provide a plentiful meal, we should give them one of the forty goslins we have. If they want the blue one give them the blue one. But make them pay. We dont even know if our goslings are gonne survive. Theres wolves and foxes and mean little kids. Lets get a geese and gwt this farm going like everyone is saying its gonma get going.
No, the Padres are not trading their best pitching prospect and a middle infield prospect that they don’t have for a one-year rental who had a 4.90 ERA last year who his team is desperate to get rid of and a DH.
Per Jon Heyman –
“Yankees agree to trade Sonny Gray to the Bank of America softball team for cash considerations.”
Because we all know Hal is not pocketing enough yacht money yet.
So? Who gives a rats ass if he’s making money. Don’t be a jealous nancy.
If he’s making more money he should be putting it back into the team or lower prices in Yankee Stadium. Don’t be a useful idiot.
Get em Maynard
It’s getting exciting….we are heading into a Gray Area…Padres!
Not enough options to pick from…
Some reason I see the Rangers in the mix. The do need a top of the front end pitcher. Daniels said they would add another starter being trade or free agency. So we shall see
Need more teams on the poll. I hear sonny gray had a nice jumper in college
I think the Twins would be smart in acquiring Gray and one of Holder/Kahnle, especially because it doesn’t appear that they would require a big haul in return.
I voted Twins too. I have no idea what the would trade for him, however. Its a roll of the dice.
Three way deal. Gray to SD, Hedges and Holder to Oakland. Prospects from A’s and Padres to NY
wouldn’t New York just do 2 separate trades in that instance?
My bad, got my Austins mixed up
No, Hedges is worth eons more than Gray. The Yankees would be the ones throwing in prospects in that trade, not the Padres.
When the Phillies sign Machado and Harper they’ll trade ya Franco for Gray.
Took a random guess and said Brewers. Most of the reports come from Heyman and i dont think i trust him so i think its all up in the air
Padres don’t make sense. They aren’t going to the playoffs so why trade something valuable.
Buy low. Sell high. Flip him, at the deadline.
Pads have the biggest prospect “war chest” to play with. Plus “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”
Gray is something valuable? That is the best laugh I have had all day.
As valuable as your statement
What’s his spin rate?
The Cubs for chatwood and 100% of his salary plus a low level prospect. An adam warren type of player. Average. Not great but has C+ potential upside..Yankees can do whatever they want with chatwood. Cubs need to buy him out.. option him to Iowa or flat out release him.
Bagged the poll on where Gray will be traded. No option for
* Who cares?
Brewers… that’s my feeling. Since it’s been mentioned that they r looking for starters and there name hasn’t came up at all. That’s a ninja cash move.
I voted Red Sox. For the lulz.
Shocked that anyone, let alone over 100 people, picked the Tigers. Anyway, Brewers, Padres or Angels make a lot of sense.
Wow, mlbtr has it narrowed down to 31 teams. Wtg..
It makes no sense for the Padres to trade for Gray, the As make more sense to package gray and kahnle for the rights the Kyler Murray and Kaprilian, two buy lows exchanged for each other with Yankees more able to give kyler the money he wants for baseball and get back kaprialian. Bring up Domingo Acevedo to fill in kahnles bullpen role
I’m apparently only the 75th person to think he may go to Colorado.
Seattle is an unlikely destination, according to this Mariner blogger:
Reds were 1st to pop into my head, and with a little thought, figured it would be the kind of play the A’s would make. See they came out at #’s 2 and 4 so far…
Hosmer for Gray straight-up
