MLBTR Poll: Who’ll Land Sonny Gray?

By Jeff Todd | January 17, 2019 at 4:52pm CDT

Often, when reports emerge that a particular player is about to be traded, it isn’t long thereafter that the landing spot is reported. Today, there’s indication that the Yankees are closing in on a deal involving righty Sonny Gray, but it’s still not yet clear where he could be heading. That leaves an opening to do a quick poll to get the final predictions of MLBTR’s readers.

Gray, 29, could fit with quite a few organizations, even after a less-than-inspiring 2018 campaign. He’s an accomplished hurler who is slated to earn a rather reasonable $7.5MM for the coming season — a manageable rate of pay even if he’s not able to get back to producing high-end results.

With Gray having been marketed so heavily all winter long, the list of interested teams is by now well-known, though surely others could yet also be involved. In my chat today, I was asked about the possibility of him landing with at least half of the teams in baseball. Rather than trying to pick a narrower list for this poll, then, I’m throwing them all out there for you to sort through.

Where’ll Gray end up? (Link for app users; response order randomized.)

Probably the easiest poll to answer ever. The leader in the clubhouse for any “Who will trade for Player X” question is always Jerry DiPoto. He’s got a bunch of new prospects burning a hole in his pocket and also a giant ballpark and forgiving fanbase that should suit Sonny to a tee. Mark it down.

Subtracting from the farm makes 0 sense for 1 year of gray.

Some combination of Mitchell Pirela Kennedy Perdomo Diaz Torrens make more sense to deal for gray. Kennedy Perdomo and giving the Yankees Luis Torrens back helps both teams. Yankees get a SP, RP, and catching prospect with multiple years of control. All of whom are under 26.

But Kennedy Perdomo and Diaz also make sense as cheap pitching options who could benefit from a change of scenery.

“Subtracting from the farm makes 0 sense for 1 year of gray.”

        Makes perfect sense

Feel Pads’ prospects it takes to acquire Kluber, would still leaves the Pads system #1. They’re that good. (Prospect wise)

Therefore, Gray Pads’ prospects, hardly scratches the Padres system. PS You can still flip him. It’s simply good business, can’t imagine a better team,

I think Gray-to-Pads marriage is bound to happen

The Pads already have the best farm in baseball. Sure they could flip him or Gray can fall flat on his face and destroy what little value he has left.

Andujar can outhit him with both of his shoes ties together…..in a league where defense is a lost art…..funny you value defense….you need to stay on your meds if you even think a comparison to Hosmer or Alvarez is even close!

If we send Gore they’ll also semd us a either a mid-prospect or possibly a BP arm that we can flip. Plus, if Andujar doesnt pan defesively within the next two years we can flip at a dead line for someone needing a bat. His bat will only prosper at Petco. And I honestly think he’ll find a level of comfort in San Diego that will help him relax defensively. Same with Gray. Hes a west coast kid.

        • Gfee0907

Andujar could do no worse than Myers. Plus explosive bat. Gray teaming up with Balsley in a hitters park and no DH will only help turn his game back to form.

        • Newspeaks

The time of day and year really determines the type of park Petco is. Id love to see more day games. Ball flys alittle bit better. Also helps the pitchers with breaking pitches.

        • Gfee0907

          …sorry, meant pitchers park.

        • redrooster

Gore isn’t getting traded and if Andujar doesn’t pan out defensively (which he won’t), his trade value won’t be nearly as high as it is right now. Your trade proposal is bad and you should feel bad.

        • Newspeaks

If the return is good enough then yes he will go. The yankees want him pretty bad since they got rid of Justice Sheffield. Also you suck. You should apologize to your father for failing him and causing ypur parents divorce.

        • redrooster

Preller will trade all the Padres’ other pitching prospects before he trades Gore. I don’t blame the Yankees for wanting him.

You’re like Rapunzel. Only instead of letting down your hair, you let down everyone in your life.

        • Newspeaks

I hate that that was a good burn. But preller himself said that even Tatis could be moved if they offered him the kitchen. The padres have three of tge top 10 LHP prospects. Trade one for two if not 3 MLB ready players sounds pretty good. Especially when you look at Grays numbers on the west coast and away from yank. Hes not a 4.50 pitcher like you say he is.

        • redrooster

You don’t trade the best of those LHP prospects. You keep that one. You especially don’t trade him for a one-year rental who had a 4.90 ERA last year.

        • Newspeaks

You’re pretty passionate about something that I wrote when I was stoned. But here’s the gist of it we have three Gosling’s they have two to three geese that they would get rid of for a Gosselin. Our three goslings are the same we don’t know which type of geese they will grow up to be. The people who have the geese that want our Gosling have just lost the latest show to their rival Farm. If they want a particular Gosling of ours and they want to give us three geese that are ready to show, or worst case provide a plentiful meal, we should give them one of the forty goslins we have. If they want the blue one give them the blue one. But make them pay. We dont even know if our goslings are gonne survive. Theres wolves and foxes and mean little kids. Lets get a geese and gwt this farm going like everyone is saying its gonma get going.

    • redrooster

No, the Padres are not trading their best pitching prospect and a middle infield prospect that they don’t have for a one-year rental who had a 4.90 ERA last year who his team is desperate to get rid of and a DH.
