Yankees Designate Tim Locastro For Assignment

By Steve Adams | January 14, 2019 at 3:40pm CDT

The Yankees announced Monday that they have designated infielder/outfielder Tim Locastro for assignment. His spot on the 40-man roster will to to veteran DJ LeMahieu, whose previously reported two-year deal is now official.

New York acquired the 26-year-old Locastro from the Dodgers earlier this season, sending minor league righty Drew Finley to Los Angeles in return. Locastro, however, doesn’t appear as though he’ll get the opportunity to suit up for the Yankees unless he clears waivers and works his way back into the MLB picture following an outright assignment.

Locastro has just 15 MLB plate appearances to his name, but he’s a .307/.402/.443 hitter with six homers, 33 doubles, two triples and 30 stolen bases (in 34 attempts) in just 114 games of Triple-A experience. The Yankees referred to Locastro as an outfielder only, likely indicative of how they planned to use him, but he’s played all over the field in the minors and has spent most of his time at second base and shortstop. He does have a pair of options remaining, so he could be viewed as a depth piece by another club.

Other than a devastating injury to several NYYs we may as well skip the season n just hand the pennant to the Evil Empire.

The Red Sox would beg to differ. Unless I missed the memo where the Yankees signed both Harper and Machado. – Yanks fan

He’s versatile and can run. Sounds like a Royal. Oh wait. He has a good OBP. Maybe not a Royal.

I doubt he clears waivers as his AAA stats aren’t all that bad.

Need to take into consideration it was in the PCL though. Figure a .040 drop in ba and 1/3 less power when he plays in the international league

Batting average could be affected by varying amount, but power dip affects his game? Not sure how you automatically deduct .040 as that is a large figure in BA. OBP would be less affected and that would be more important for this speedy player.

        6 HR and 30 SB.
Think PCL affects SB different than other AAA Leages?

well, he was a yankee for some time so he must be a real stud. Wonder how much a team will offer him.

    Nothing to see here.
For anyone griping about yanks adding DJ instead of Harper/Manny, needs to realize yanks are already good, and by adding DJ, they added something they needed towards getting over the hump. That being a guy who can hit for a high avg, while also playing stellar defense, and dosent strike out a ton. He makes a great addition to the glut of low avg hitting, power hitters they have. The last 5 yrs, DJ has either been a All star, won a gold glove , won a batting title, or a combination of both .

I agree. No one talks about it, but we need a lead off hitter. Yea, dj doesn’t have the best obp but he’s a pesky hitter who will put the ball in play. Can’t wait to watch him slap singles to right field all day.

Here’s a thought, how many of arrenados rbis have been dj scoring?

He hit 200 on the road last year. He isn’t even a poor mans Macado. I’m a Huge Yankees fan. This guy doesn’t move the needle. Hal’s is just cheap and Cashman is a terrible GM. One title this century, not exactly a stud. He wouldn’t last with any other team.

A little surprising only because he was the only OF on the 40 man outside of Judge, Stanton, Gardner, Hicks, Ellsbury, and Frazier. I would’ve liked to see them move on from Cessa.

Guy can play infield too. Feel like they should’ve parted with Tyler wade instead. But I haven’t seen anything good from Cessa either.

you realize tyler wade was a top 5 prospect in their system 2 years ago right.

Yeah wade is too young and versatile to give up on, he only has like 100 something big league PA. Before the DJ signing he was probably making the team

Sooner or later Luis Cessa is going to draw the short straw. Yankees might as well never had wasted their time signing these guys just stamp Place Holder on the roster would had been just as effective.
