Diamondbacks Return Rule 5 Pick Nick Green To Yankees

By George Miller | March 24, 2019 at 4:12pm CDT

The Diamondbacks will return Rule 5 selection Nick Green to the Yankees, per a Yankees team announcement (Twitter link). After clearing waivers, Green, who turns 24 tomorrow, will rejoin his former club, having fallen short of the Diamondbacks’ Opening Day roster.

Green’s problems in spring training stemmed from a lack of control, as he walked 11 batters in 13 1/3 innings. Green was chosen by the D-Backs in the Rule 5 Draft after a successful season at High-A, in which he posted a 3.28 ERA in 115 1/3 innings. Green will now return to the Yankees organization, though the team is not required to place him on its 40-man roster.

hmm, youd think theyd at least roll the dice given his ST numbers. Not outrageous, but acceptable.

      11BB in 13.1 IP. That’s outrageous

Yeah, you can’t have a guy who can’t throw any strikes on the ML club. He clearly needs some work. The ERA would look much different if he wasn’t facing 4A guys and minor leaguers for the most part in ST. That wouldn’t fly on the big club.

Not only the 11 BB but 11 hits, 1 HBP and 1 WP and somehow managed 5 R (4 ER) and a 2.70 ERA with a 1.650 WHIP. That’s a neat trick but not sustainable.

The Yankees almost always have their Rule 5 guys returned.

Most players get returned but especially from teams whose minor league talent has been plucked through protecting others, promotions and trades.

It’s something to be said that their guys always get picked. Their % of keepers may be lower than the ML average though. It’s a small percentage that actually make it but I don’t think anyone from NY has this decade. Don’t think there’s much to say one way or the other on that though.

This is true for all teams, it’s highly infrequent that they don’t get returned. Ironically, the Padres actually DID keep Luis Torrens (from the Yankees) as a Rule 5 pick for all of 2017 even though he had no business being on an MLB roster.

Lotta commas in that one sentence about his age tomorrow. Have to think there’s a less convoluted way to write that, but I feel like someone should be editing these.
